Abstract: Filter cigarettes which are produced in a filter tipping machine are transported by a severing conveyor in the form of two rows wherein the filters of cigarettes in one row are adjacent to the filters of cigarettes in the other row. The cigarettes of the one row are thereupon inverted end-for-end by sets of pairwise arranged pivotable levers one of which withdraws a cigarette from the one row during movement along an endless circular path and turns the removed cigarette through 90 degrees about an axis which is normal to the cigarette and is remote from its filter while the one lever travels along an arc of 180 degrees. The thus partially inverted cigarette is taken over by the other lever of the respective pair and is turned through additional 90 degrees while the other lever travels along an arc of 180 degrees.

Abstract: A device for transferring rod-like articles, particularly cigarettes, from a rectilinear horizontal path to a rotary fluted drum having its axis of rotation substantially parallel to the rectilinear path. The device has two main rotary elements which rotate on two fixed shafts and which are coupled by at least one pair of main double cranks each having an arm integral with two crank pins to form an articulated parallelogram type rotary system. A crank pin of at least one main double crank extends beyond the respective main rotary element and ends with an eccentric pin to form a pair of parallel orbiting axes which carry respective secondary rotary elements coupled by at least one pair of secondary double cranks to form a second articulated parallelogram type rotary system. The crank pin of at least one second double crank extends beyond the respective secondary rotary element to form an extension on which there is a pneumatic pick-up or a suction head.

Abstract: A method for transferring cigarette pieces from a double rod cigarette manufacturing machine to a filter fitting machine, in which said pieces are transferred at least two at a time, one from each of the two rods, from the horizontal exit bench of the manufacturing machine to the outer surface of the inlet drum of the filter fitting machine of axis parallel to the rods, by means of a plurality of withdrawal elements which undergo a translatory movement along an annular path extending about a first axis parallel to the bench and perpendicular to the rods, while simultaneously undergoing a rocking movement about a second axis parallel to said rods.

Abstract: Two cigarette making machines discharge discrete files of coaxial plain cigarettes which are moved axially in parallel guides, and successive foremost cigarettes in each guide are engaged and accelerated by a discrete rotating cam which propels the cigarettes into the oncoming axially parallel peripheral flutes of a rotating drum-shaped conveyor. Each flute receives a cigarette from each of the two guides and the distance between a pair of neighboring flutes on the conveyor exceeds the distance between the two files of cigarettes.

Abstract: A cigarette reversing apparatus with a rotating drum having radially extending slots of a width slightly larger than the diameter of a cigarette and of sufficient depth, each slot having at its opposing surfaces a pair of cigarette holding members spaced from each other a distance slightly smaller than the cigarette diameter, these pairs of cigarette holding members being arranged on the circumference of the drum. The cigarettes are fed onto the cigarette holding members and guide elements bring the longitudinal center of the cigarette to the circumference of the cigarette holding members; arcuate guide members provided along the outer circumference of the drum guide the free end of the cigarette so as to turn the cigarette about the point held by the cigarette holding members. A retrieving member takes out the cigarettes from the rotating drum.

Abstract: A device for monitoring the quality of cigarettes in a packing machine, which may be mounted on an input hopper of a packing machine of cyclic type in order to monitor the quality of the cigarettes of a stack moving in steps along each output channel of the hopper and to carry out the removal of defective cigarettes, comprising, with respect to each channel, a sensor element and an associate ejector element, whose respective operating cycles take place, with respect to each cigarette, within a same cycle of this machine.

Abstract: The cigarette rod which is produced in a cigarette maker is subdivided into a file of plain cigarettes of unit length or double unit length. If the file contains cigarettes of unit length, successive pairs of cigarettes are deflected sideways to form two rows of coaxial cigarettes before the cigarettes of one row are staggered transversely of the cigarettes of the other row so that the two rows can be converted into a single row by shifting the cigarettes of at least one row axially between the neighboring cigarettes of the other row. If the file contains cigarettes of double unit length, such file is converted into a single row of parallel cigarettes which are thereupon severed to yield pairs of coaxial cigarettes of unit length forming two rows wherein each cigarette of one row is coaxial with a cigarette of the other row. The cigarettes of one row are then staggered with reference to the cigarettes of the other row prior to shuffling to form a single row of parallel cigarettes of unit length.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for taking rod-shaped articles of oval cross section, such as oval filter plugs for cigarettes, from a hopper, with a predetermined spacing between consecutive articles, and for presenting the articles at a destination with a predetermined orientation. A plug drum having flutes shaped to accept a single oval filter plug in any angular orientation is used to remove the filter plug from the hopper. When each filter plug is released from the plug drum, it drops through a guideway preferably defined between two cooperating elements, which permit it to pass through only with a specific orientation. At the discharge end of the guideway is preferably a second drum, which has flutes shaped to accept a filter plug leaving the guideway only in the desired final orientation.

Abstract: An axial translation device for partly finished cigarettes disposed alongside one another in such a way as to form two substantially parallel rows, the device being provided with an input conveyor, an output conveyor and a conveyor roller for each said row disposed between the said input conveyor and output conveyor and tangential thereto, the said two conveyor rollers having parallel, but non coincident axes and supporting the partly finished cigarettes of the associated said row in an axially movable manner under the thrust of actuator means.

Abstract: Apparatus for controlling the timing of control signals concerning operations on conveyed cigarettes or other articles of the cigarette industry comprising means for generating a first control signal; means for measuring the speed of transport of the cigarettes; processing means arranged to receive a signal representing the measured speed of transport, to receive the first control signal and to generate a second control signal which is transmitted to an operating device after a delay dependent upon the signal representing the measured speed of transport and upon the characteristics and position of the operating device.

Abstract: A cigarette packing machine with a plurality of passageways leading from a hopper, includes an ends testing device (16, 16a) for individual cigarettes, so that faulty cigarettes can be rejected from the hopper before the cigarettes are ejected in groups at the bottom of the passageways (2).Leading from the hopper are two channels (6, 8) feeding each of the passageways. In one embodiment of the invention cigarettes are held up for ends testing in alternate channels by suction ports (14) formed in inclined surfaces leading to each passageway. In a second embodiment a set of horizontal reciprocating wires (30, 32) acts as an escapement mechanism.

Abstract: Apparatus for ejecting cigarettes, comprises a conveyor (10) arranged to carry a sideways-moving row of cigarettes (14) through an ejection station at which there is a nozzle (20) arranged, when a cigarette is to be ejected, to direct a jet of air (32, 34) transversely past the cigarette and onto an air-deflecting surface (26) on the conveyor which deflects the air jet onto the cigarette so as to blow the cigarette transversely off the conveyor.

Abstract: A reciprocable pusher 18 ejects cigarette pack groups 17 from magazine shafts 12 in three stacked layers, with one cigarette 11a in the middle layer being retained in the magazine by a stop 24 having an end 25 extending across and blocking the ejection path of the cigarette. The stop comprises a pivotably mounted lever spring biased to enable the expulsion of the cigarette when a predetermined mechanical load is exceeded, to thereby prevent jamming and blockage due to non-uniform cigarettes and stacks.

Abstract: Plain or filter cigarettes are tested at a first station by two or more testing devices each of which monitors the cigarettes for the presence or absence of a particular defect. The testing devices generate defect signals which are delayed by shift registers so as to ensure that the delayed defect signals are transmitted to a segregating mechanism which removes defective cigarettes from a path that is common to the satisfactory and defective cigarettes and delivers defective cigarettes to selected receptacles which are installed at a second station and each of which gathers only cigarettes exhibiting a particular defect. Actuation of a switch entails the removal of a selected number of samples from the common path for satisfactory and defective cigarettes, and such samples are gathered in an additional receptacle at the second station.

Abstract: A turnaround device for rod-like articles, in particular cigarettes, in which a conveyor device is operable to advance the articles in a direction transverse their axes and arranged in two rows; the articles of one row being supported by the conveyor device by means of associated fixed supports which are uniformly spaced, and the articles of the other row being carried by the conveyor device via respective movable supports each of which is given a reciprocating rotary movement around an arc of 180.degree. about an axis disposed transversely both to the associated article and to the direction of advance, and a reciprocating translational movement parallel to the axis of rotation.

Abstract: A filter attachment machine includes a fluted drum which is arranged to receive double filters and double cigarettes. A knife cuts the double cigarettes through the middle to form separate cigarette portions and, with the aid of a further drum, the two cigarette portions associated with each double filter are swopped in position so as to lie at opposite ends of the double filter, displacement of one of the cigarette portions being achieved preferably by displacing the associated double filter which in turn pushes the cigarette portion. The double cigarettes may be delivered axially into the flutes of the first drum from a cigarette making machine, preferably after delivery of the double filters which can then serve as resilient buffers for the incoming double cigarettes.

Abstract: An apparatus for transfer of successive cigarettes which are delivered seriatim to a first station by moving them axially to a second station from which the cigarettes are removed by advancing them sideways has a planetary transmission with a rotary planet carrier for a set of equidistant planet pinions each connected to a hollow crank arm for a discrete article receiving device. The pinions are rotated by a stationary sun gear when the carrier is driven whereby the receiving devices travel along an endless path a portion of which extends between the first and second stations. The receiving devices are held against changes in orientation during travel along the endless path by crank units and torque transmitting units. The crank units are turned back and forth by a driven holder which indirectly rotates the carrier through the medium of the crank units, and each crank unit rotates the corresponding torque transmitting unit which latter is connected to and turns the corresponding receiving device.

Abstract: Apparatus for selectively transferring cigarettes, uniting bands or other discrete articles from a first onto a second conveyor has a first suction generating device which communicates with suction ports in the periphery of the cylindrical rotor of the first conveyor while such ports advance along a first portion of a first endless path, and a discrete second suction generating device which can be activated to draw air from the ports in a second portion of the first path adjacent to a portion of a second endless path defined by the second conveyor. When the second suction generating device is activated, the articles which reach the second portion of the first path are not transferred onto the second conveyor. The second suction generating device can constitute an injector which can be activated or deactivated by a valve within a few milliseconds.

Abstract: A cigarette testing device (10) detects improperly filled or missing cigarettes in groups of cigarettes in a cigarette packing machine. Tappets (20) are positioned against the ends of cigarettes (11) and the position of tappets (20) is determined by optical sensors (28). Defective cigarettes (15) are removed from the group by nozzles (24). One to one correspondence between cigarettes, tappets, sensors, and nozzle ejectors allows single defective cigarettes to be rejected without rejecting the entire group of cigarettes.

Abstract: Apparatus for conveying cigarettes by means of one or more fluted drums has a frame including spaced front and back walls defining between them a suction manifold; a fluted drum in front of the frame; a tubular drum-carrying member which extends through an opening in the front wall of the frame, engages and seals in or around an aperture in the rear wall of the frame, and has a flange by which it is secured to the front wall of the frame, the drum being rotatable around the tubular member; and a drive shaft which extends axially through the tubular member, is secured to the front end of the drum, is supported by bearings carried by the tubular member, and carries at its rear end behind the rear wall of the frame a gear or other means by which it is driven; suction being transmitted to ports in the flutes of the drum from the manifold via a passage contained within the thickness of the wall of the tubular member in the region where it extends through the front wall of the frame.

Abstract: A junction zone between the first and second sections of a conveyor system for sidewise transport of cigarettes or analogous rod-shaped articles communicates with the first opening of a reservoir which normally constitutes a surge bin for temporary storage of those articles which are delivered by the first section but cannot be accepted by the second section. The reservoir has a second opening which is normally separated from the first opening by a reciprocable partition but is free to discharge articles into a tray filling machine when the reservoir is filled to capacity and the rate at which the first section delivers articles continues to exceed the rate at which the second section removes articles from the junction zone.

Abstract: Apparatus for transferring cigarettes from a first station where the cigarettes arrive by moving axially to a second station which the cigarettes leave by moving sideways has a rotary carrier for several hollow crank arms which are rotatably mounted in the carrier and whose free ends are provided with rotary receiving devices for retention and transport of cigarettes from the first to the second station while the carrier rotates in response to rotation of an eccentric holder which is driven by the prime mover of the cigarette making machine. The holder transmits motion to discrete crank units which cooperate with universal joints and cardanic shafts to prevent changes in orientation of receiving devices during orbital movement of receiving devices about the axis of the carrier.

Abstract: Filter cigarettes which are produced in a filter tipping machine are conveyed past several successive testing devices, each of which monitors different characteristics of the cigarettes, thereupon past a cigarette removing device, past a segregating device and on to a conveyor for transport of satisfactory cigarettes to a packing machine or into storage. When any one of the testing devices detects a defective or presumably defective cigarette, it generates a defect signal which is transported to the segregating device for expulsion of the respective cigarette from the path which leads to the conveyor. If the operator wishes, the defective or presumably defective cigarettes which are detected by a selected testing device can be conveyed only to and expelled by the removing device in response to the corresponding defect signals so that the removed cigarettes can be examined for the purpose of ascertaining the quality of testing operation which is carried out by the selected testing device.

Abstract: Apparatus which transports filter rod sections from a maker to a processing machine has a pneumatic sender which admits a file of sections into the inlet of a pneumatic conveyor whose outlet delivers sections to a receiver wherein the file of sections is converted into a row which is admitted into the magazine of the processing machine. A first photoelectronic detector monitors the travel of sections at the inlet of the conveyor and a second photoelectronic detector monitors the sections in the region of an accelerating device forming part of the receiver and serving to separate successive sections of the file from each other.

Abstract: The magazine of each of an entire battery of filter tipping machines receives filter rod sections by way of two discrete pneumatic conveyors whose inlets receive filter rod sections from discrete sources by way of pneumatic propelling units and whose outlets admit files of axially moving filter rod sections into discrete receiving units having devices for converting the files into rows and for forcibly feeding the rows into spaced-apart portions of the respective magazines below the upper surfaces of the supplies of filter rod sections in such magazines. Each propelling unit can be started or arrested independently of the associated propelling unit, and each receiving unit can feed filter rod sections at less than maximum capacity and/or intermittently.

Abstract: Cigarettes, as they are grouped in batches to be packed, have their ends detected for firmness or for missing filter tips, by having an array of individually actuated plungers (9) applied to their ends. Each plunger is actuated by air pressure acting on a piston (13) integral with the plunger. If a cigarette (C) is faulty a protuberance (21) on the plunger engages a common impingement plate (20), whose oscillation causes a piezoelectric transducer (22) to emit a fault signal, enabling that cigarette group subsequently to be rejected.

Abstract: A device for feeding cigarette filters or similar rod-like articles comprises a fluted drum and a conveyor for feeding a stack-like stream of filters towards the drum and including a conveyor band which is arranged to engage one side of the stack-like stream of filters while moving between two longitudinally spaced guides between which the conveyor is capable of deflecting outwards, in response to the pressure of the filters and against a restraining force, to accommodate a variable quantity of filters in the region of the conveyor band.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is an apparatus for directly linking one or more cigarette making machines to one or more cigarette packing machines. A provision is made for one or more variable volume storage units for compensating production imbalances between the machines.The storage units extend along constant curvature paths and support and convey the cigarettes, utilizing continuous belts mounted endlessly around extremity rollers of truncated cone shape.Turnbuckles that exert a radial force with respect to the arc described by each storage unit, restrain and guide the belts.

Abstract: A device for the formation of groups of cigarettes of at least one row of cigarettes arranged parallel side-by-side which comprises a feeding hopper subdivided by partition walls into a plurality of adjacent passageways which open into a collecting chamber delimited by a bottom plate and by side pushers. The partition wall located in the middle zone of the row of cigarettes, extends down to the bottom plate and engages by its terminal portion a groove provided in the said bottom plate. In this manner, the cigarette row being formed is divided into two row portions.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method for producing a filter cigarette with a filter unit which is provided with a porous or perforated covering strip. A porous or perforated connecting strip joins the tobacco part to the filter unit. The adhesive for connecting the covering strip to the outside of the filter element on the one hand and the adhesive for connecting the connecting strip to the outsides of the filter unit and of the tobacco part on the other hand is applied on those surfaces on the one hand of the covering strip and on the other hand of the connecting strip which are inwardly oriented on the filter cigarette.

Abstract: A process for laying out a maximum number of cigar wrappers in a leaf or half-leaf of tobacco, the position of each wrapper being located within the leaf or half-leaf by two series of variables which are, on the one hand, the abscissa or ordinate from the center of the wrapper plotted with respect to the main direction of the leaf and to one end of this leaf, and on the other hand the angle that the main direction of the wrapper makes with the main direction of the leaf, said process comprising the step of successively laying out the wrappers so that, for each wrapper, the abscissa, or ordinate, from the center or its angle with respect to the main direction is maximum or minimum.

Abstract: A device for feeding cigarette filters or similar rod-like articles comprises a fluted drum and a conveyor for feeding a stack-like stream of filters towards the drum and including a conveyor band which is arranged to engage one side of the stack-like stream of filters while moving between two longitudinally spaced guides between which the conveyor is capable of deflecting outwards, in response to the pressure of the filters and against a restraining force, to accommodate a variable quantity of filters in the region of the conveyor band.
