Including Relatively Movable Thread Clamping Surfaces Patents (Class 132/326)
  • Patent number: 10806551
Abstract: A floss holder includes a housing and a spindle for receiving floss and a fork having two ends between which the feed portion of the floss is secured for use. A first locking plate is operable for receiving a feed portion and a return portion of the floss upon a horizontal surface thereof. A second locking plate is operable to engage the first locking plate, where a distal end of the second locking plate engages the feed portion and the return portion to substantially constrain the feed portion of the floss on the fork and the return portion, applying tension along the feed portion and the return portion. A number of protrusions assist in retaining the feed portion and preventing the tape floss from slippage while reducing the friction around the fork; the protrusions are located at the base of the fork and inside the floss holder.

  • Patent number: 8439050
Abstract: A self-dispensing dental floss applicator that has a U-shaped elongated housing (1) with two hollow prongs (4a, 4b) set perpendicularly to the body at one end and a larger opposite end to contain the locking mechanism, the dispensing mechanism, the spool (3) of fresh floss and the spool (18 or 21) of used floss. The locking mechanism composed of a casing (5), an axle (9), two lower grip pads (17a, 17b), two upper grip pads (7a, 7b), two strip springs (8a and 8b) and a lever (6) with two eccentric friction parts is used to hold the floss in position thus creating the right tension on the floss. A tension pin (19) containing a screw (20) is provided to increase floss tension if/when needed by the user. Rotating the lever (6) up unlocks the floss. Further repeated rotations of the lever backward action the sliding mechanism containing a rack-and-pinion gear (23 and 21), together with springs 24 and 26, that in turn causes the spool of used floss (21) to rotate.

  • Patent number: 7082950
Abstract: A dental flossing device is characterized by a flossing circuit comprised of a flossing supply spool and a take-up spool mounted to a housing. The floss feeds from the supply spool along a pair of prongs forming a fork extension of the handle and is stretched across the prongs and appropriately tensioned to be inserted into a users mouth for flossing. To maintain tension, a pair of ratchet pawls are jointly engageable with a ratchet mounted for co-rotation with the take-up spool. The pawls are offset relative to the ratchet teeth to ensure appropriate tension. Tension on the supply spool side of the flosser is achieved with a tension arm in constant engagement with tension teeth co-rotatably mounted with the spool. When a floss advancing trigger is not depressed, a brake pawl formed at one end of the trigger is spring biased into locking engagement with these teeth while the tension arm assures proper tension on the supply side.

  • Patent number: 5685325
Abstract: A dental floss holder for securely fastening one end of a dental floss instead of winding it around a finger includes a pair of jaws, two mating surfaces, and a locking member. The dental floss is retained between the jaws. One of the mating surfaces is formed on one jaw and the other mating surface on the other jaw. The locking member locks the jaws tightly such that there is substantially no gap or space between the mating surfaces so that the mating surfaces abut against each other closely to fasten the dental floss. The locking member and the jaws also comprise mating surfaces to be able to securely fasten the dental floss when the locking member locks both jaws.

  • Patent number: 5680875
Abstract: A dental floss dispenser having a floss securement mechanism to secure the dental floss with respect to the dispenser body and for use during flossing is provided. One embodiment locks a freely rotating internal spool of dental floss relative to the dental floss dispenser. Both the floss securement mechanism and the spool locking are actuated by the hand holding the dental floss dispenser. The dental floss dispenser may also incorporate a finger grip so that the dispenser can be held by the lower fingers, a contoured shape to better fit the hand of the user, a wide or weighted base for easy pick-up, or a U-shaped indentation for quickly grabbing dental floss at the commencement of flossing. The dispenser is further designed to be used during the flossing procedure as an anchor for the dental floss to thereby allow the user to floss without wrapping floss around at least one finger.

  • Patent number: 5678579
Abstract: An apparatus and method for positioning and moving a flexible element in space. The element is formed into a loop mounted on a pair of positioning handles. The loop, which may be a real or a virtual loop, is mounted on the two handles so as to be movable relative to the handles and to form a working segment of the element between corresponding one free end of the handles, each by one hand or both by the fingers (and thumb) of one hand, positions the working segment in space and manipulation of the loop moves the working segment relative to the handles. The apparatus and method find advantageous application in dental flossing devices, a laparoscopic surgical device or cutting or abrading devices, for example.

  • Patent number: 5657780
Abstract: A strong, light weight, highly maneuverable dental floss holder has two centrally pivoted support members with holding sections extending on one side of the pivot and a pair of handle sections extending on the other side. Storage for new and used dental floss is provided by supply and take up reels located between the pair of handle sections. The handle sections terminate with a wedge actuated break assembly that restricts undesirable motion of the supply and take up reels. With single hand operation tension of the floss between the tips of the holding sections can be readily controlled and the dental floss can be selectively advanced.

  • Patent number: 5560378
Abstract: A self-dispensing dental floss applicator has a U-shaped elongated housing (1) with two hollow prongs (4a, 4b) at one end and a larger opposite end to contain the locking mechanism and the spool (3) of fresh floss. The locking mechanism composed of a casing (5), two grip pads (7), a spring 8 and a lever (6) with two eccentric friction parts is used to hold the floss in position thus creating the right tension on the floss. After rotating the lever (6) up, a length of floss from the spool (3) is initially pulled through one side of the locking mechanism, spanned through the two prongs (4a, 4b) and then pulled through the other side of the locking mechanism. The used end (16b) of the floss passes through an aperture in the cover (2) and a surplus length thereof is cut off by a cutter. By pulling the floss by hand at the bottom part of the instrument, fresh floss (16A) is spanned between the prongs for use.

  • Patent number: 5495863
Abstract: A hand-held dental flossing device has a housing with a handle which may be held with one hand. A dental floss supply is located in the housing and a winding gear is rotatably mounted to the housing. A free end of the dental floss strand from the floss supply is threaded through the housing into a flossing arm of the housing where it passes an opening and returns into the housing to be attached to the winding gear. The housing has an opening where the winding gear extends therefrom and is accessible to the fingers of the user's hand. The winding gear has teeth which cooperate with a stopper to form a one-way ratchet gear. A floss tensioning button is located in the housing and has first and second ends extending from the housing. The first and second ends are accessible to the user's hand holding the handle of the flossing device.

  • Patent number: 5423338
Abstract: This invention is substantially a device for properly orienting and securing dental floss for the purpose of cleaning the regions between the teeth in a convenient manner. Floss resides in a storage cavity such as can be located in the handle of the device. The floss is routed from the cavity through a system of grooves to a U-shaped member which places the floss between the teeth. A locking mechanism removes slack from the floss and engages a taunt grip on the floss. The aforementioned locking mechanism is readily disengaged to allow advancement to a new section of floss. A compliant sealing member is attached to the locking mechanism to prevent fluids from entering the floss chamber.
