  • Patent number: 6401736
Abstract: An umbrella device incorporating an engaging mechanism for securing the umbrella to fixed location. The device includes an elongated shaft having a top end and a bottom end and which is capable of being extended across an overall axial length. A fabric covering portion is supported by an outwardly actuable frame secured to the shaft, the frame including a plurality of elongate and arcuate ribs to which is secured the fabric covering portion. An annular collar is mounted about the elongated shaft in axially extending fashion. An additional plurality of supporting ribs extend from the collar, each of the supporting ribs engaging an associated fabric securing rib so that, upon a selected upward axial extension of the collar, the frame is engaged in the outwardly actuated manner. A substantially “C” shaped clamp is secured in axially slidable fashion along the extended axial length of the shaft, the clamp affixing the umbrella device to a substantially horizontally extending ledge support.

The sleeve is in connection an inner rod on the inside of the main shaft that in turn is used to open and close the ribs that support the canopy of the umbrella. Movement of the actuator sleeve upward will move the inner rod upward as well as pull the ribs downward so as to close the canopy. Movement of the actuator sleeve downward will pull the ribs away from the central shaft and hence open the canopy. Because of the short length of the ribs combined with the weight of the canopy itself, it is believed that this makes such large patio type umbrellas easier to open and close using this sleeve actuator mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5738129
Abstract: An umbrella that folds in a radial manner and has a canopy supported by a shaft that has its vertical projection located outwardly from the fabric cover. The umbrella shaft extends from its vertical position to an almost horizontal position towards the center of the canopy, forming in effect one of the support ribs. The fabric cover is secured to the shaft by snaps, or a hook and loop fastener. Both ends of the fabric panel are attached to the shaft in a looped manner. The opening of the fabric is looped under the shaft to prevent water entry. Located at the end of the horizontal shaft is a vertical pin representing the center of the umbrella to which a plate pivotally attaches. A plurality of support ribs are pivotally connected to the plate and made of flexible material to prevent breakage during windy conditions. The folding mechanism allows for radial folding of all support ribs to be aligned with the supporting shaft.
