  • Patent number: 6158477
Abstract: A flexible duct and method for making the duct are disclosed. The duct includes an inner wall bonded to an outer wall, with a wire resilient helix and a scrim sandwiched therebetween. The scrim is in the form of a helical tape embedded between the outer wall and the inner wall, and preferably consists of a bonded yarn constructed in a layered or interwoven square or other uninterrupted geometrical pattern. • Patent number: 6017335
Abstract: A process for making a reinforced tubular product, especially a catheter, in a single extrusion step. A reinforcing member is applied to an extruded thermoplastic catheter body of about its finished size which is softened by heating while tensioning the reinforcing member to control the surface deformation or penetration of the catheter wall by the reinforcing member to produce an irregular surface contour on the catheter body. The catheter body is then smoothed in a sizing die burying the reinforcement to form the finished product. The heating step may be in addition to or substituted by a curing step when a thermosetting or cross-linking material is used for the body. The reinforcement may be braid, or a helical wrap of one or more members applied at one or more controlled angles relative to the axis of the catheter to control the apparent stiffness and torque transmission efficiency of the catheter.

  • Patent number: 5918642
Abstract: A flexible synthetic resin tube is provided by uniting an inner layer of a polyether-series thermoplastic polyurethane resin with a hard synthetic resin spiral reinforcement (e.g. a hard vinyl chloride resin) or a soft synthetic resin outer layer (e.g. a soft vinyl chloride resin), through an interposed adhesive intermediate resin layer. The polyurethane resin includes a resin having a diol composed of a tetramethylenoxy unit as a polyol component. The spiral reinforcement may be buried in the outer layer. The intermediate resin layer may comprise a mixture of the polyether-series thermoplastic polyurethane resin, and the synthetic resin for the spiral reinforcement or the outer layer. This tube imparts an enhanced hydrolysis-resistant property to the polyurethane resin forming the inner layer, and an improved adhesive strength between the inner layer and the spiral reinforcement or the outer layer.

  • Patent number: 4342612
Abstract: The invention provides a hose that withstands a vacuum which is considered to be approximately two to three times greater than the vacuum withstood by the best known previously available pliable convoluted semirigid plastic hoses of comparable designs. To fabricate the hose, a bobbin of wire stock is unwound, with the wire preferably being pulled off the end of the bobbin. The wire is then looped around a spool to form it into a spiral or coil having a preset diameter which is proportionately smaller than the diameter of a preformed, semirigid convoluted plastic hose. While the pulled wire is still substantially extended, it is taken up by being rolled upon the plastic hose, thereby snapping the preset formed wire spiral into the spiral convolutions formed in the surface of the hose. If desired, the spiral or coil might be pulled off the end of the samller diameter spool to impart a twist thereto.

  • Patent number: 4308895
Abstract: A thermoplastic hose construction and method of making same wherein a thermal bond is achieved directly between the reinforcement and cover without the necessity for intermediate bonding materials. An open flame played upon a reinforced core tube, wherein the reinforcement consists of yarn windings at least one of which is partly formed of continuous filaments of olefinic material compatible with an olefinic based cover, softens the compatible strands just prior to extrusion of the cover thereover to provide a distributed bond of discontinuous contact areas between the reinforcement and cover. In a preferred embodiment of the invention polypropylene is used as one yarn in the reinforcement for bonding with a thermoplastic rubber cover.

  • Patent number: 4295496
Abstract: A hose is described having the usual elongated polymeric body and a coiled insert member formed of a plurality of turns contained within the internal passageway of the hose. The hose body has a normal tendency to swell under elevated temperatures or pressure whereby the coiled insert member may shift axially. This problem is solved by application of a filamentary band of expansion resistant material extending circumferentially about the hose body, which prevents enlargement of the hose during use at elevated temperatures.
