Patent number: 5647403Abstract: A method and apparatus utilizing an elongate, flexible member operatively attached to rods that move up and down, on a Jacquard loom. A latch control mechanism is provided for latching said elongate, flexible member in a fixed position by applying pressure thereto by vacuum or pressure. This latching of the rod in an upper position creates a shed whereby filling yarns can be passed through to create Jacquard fabric. The pressure can be applied against the elongate, flexible member by filling sealed elongate, elastomeric member with pressured gas. In addition, the pressure can be applied against the elongate, flexible member by activating a dimensionally alterable, electric element that presses against the elongate, flexible member.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1995Date of Patent: July 15, 1997Assignee: Milliken Research CorporationInventor: Charles Everage Willbanks

Patent number: 5390709Abstract: A shedding apparatus for being fitted onto a fabric-forming machine such as a loom for controlling the up and down movement of warp-carrying heddles to form a filling insertion zone. The shedding apparatus includes a computer for storing pattern information relating to a pre-determined pattern to be translated into a woven pattern on the fabric-forming machine. A plurality of pneumatic piston and cylinder assemblies are attached to respective heddles for pneumatically moving the heddle attached thereto into and out of shed-forming position. Pressurized air is delivered to predetermined piston and cylinder assemblies to thereby move the selected piston and cylinder assemblies and their respective heddles into upper and lower shed-forming positions to receive a filling yarn to thereby create a portion of the pattern.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1992Date of Patent: February 21, 1995Inventor: Barnabas Martonffy

Patent number: 5360038Abstract: A shedding device and a method for joining the ends of a fabric into an endless belt of fabric, or, alternatively, joining the ends of separate pieces of fabric into a single piece of fabric. The shedding device employs a plurality of heddles supported at only one end, allowing the heddles to be individually moved or adjusted. The heddles are connected to the top ends of piston rods of a plurality of pneumatic cylinders. The heddles move up and down to shift threads passing through the heddles, so as to form a shed. The shedding method employs an interweaving piece of fabric, with a portion of the interweaving piece having only weft threads. The weft thread of the interweaving piece interwoven with the warp threads of the ends of the fabric to be joined. Alternatively, the weft threads of the interweaving piece can be interwoven with the weft threads of the ends of the fabric to be joined.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1992Date of Patent: November 1, 1994Assignee: Nippon Filcon Co., Ltd.Inventor: Seiji Sano

Patent number: 4173990Abstract: A plurality of generally parallel, side-by-side warp tows of carbonaceous precursor material are interwoven with fill yarns forming a fabric of low density cross weave to facilitate handling of the warp tows for oxidation, carbonization and other processing thereof. A different fill yarn is interwoven with the warp tows from each of the opposite edges of the fabric so as to form a succession of generally V-shaped loops in each warp yarn with the loops of the two different warp yarns being staggered along the length of the fabric. Each loop of warp yarn is comprised of a pair of lengths of warp yarn which enter the fabric from spaced-apart locations along an edge of the fabric and undulate under and over the warp tows in a like sense which is opposite the sense of the undulations of the immediately adjacent loops prior to joining at a point across part but not all of the width of the fabric.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1978Date of Patent: November 13, 1979Assignee: HitcoInventors: Guy B. Patent number: 4125135Abstract: This relates to a device for exerting a back-pull on the heddles of Jacquard looms. In such looms the upper end of each heddle is connected to a patterning machine and it is necessary that the lower end of the heddle be connected to a pulling device which applies the necessary pull in the opposite direction to return the displaced heddle. Each heddle has permanently connected thereto a piston which is positioned within a cylinder guide with one end of the cylinder guide being open into a chamber wherein a pressure other than atmospheric pressure is maintained and the opposite end of the cylinder guide is open to the atmosphere in a manner wherein each piston and its associated heddle is displaced away from the patterning machine. The pull-back pressure may be varied by varying the pressure within the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1977Date of Patent: November 14, 1978Inventor: Wolfgang Ebisch
