A cutter blade behind the roller pin follows the roller pin and cuts the band above the roller pin and flattens a cut end over a buckle of the band.

    Abstract: A tightening apparatus for strapping an object with a plastic band includes a stationary cutter with a cutting slot, a pivoting cutter mounted inside the stationary cutter, and a resilient element. The resilient element is situated so as to push a cutting edge of the pivoting cutter away from a cutting edge of the stationary cutter when a cutting operation is not being performed. When a band is present between the pivoting and stationary cutters and the cutting operation is actuated, a pivoting force caused by an applied cutting force moves the pivoting cutter against the resilient element and engages the cutting edges of both cutters so as to cut the band. The fact that the cutting edges are engaged only when a band is inserted between the cutters greatly improves the life of the device.

The angled hooking cuts effectively fasten the bands together. A powered ram is coupled to each of the clamp, knife, anvil, and crimping elements to operate each element in proper sequence during ram motion.

    Abstract: A power driven banding tool utilizes, for example, a pneumatic motor, electric motor or other means of motive power for progressively driving the band through the tool. The tool is provided with a rotary drive mechanism which includes a knurled wheel and a plurality of spring loaded pinch rollers for gripping the band. The driving torque for the knurled wheel is provided by a worm gear assembly by way of an adjustable clutch. The worm gear assembly is operatively connected to a pneumatic or electric motor. The adjustable clutch allows the pull pressure to be calibrated to the desired limits. An Oldham type coupling is provided between the motor output shaft and the worm gear input shaft to overcome any axial misalignment. The tool also includes a handle operated rollover assembly for bending the band around the buckle to maintain the tension in the band so it can be cut off.

A handle pivotally mounted in the housing operates the reciprocable feeder through an operative connection responsive to the tension of the band in such manner that when a predetermined tension has been reached, the operative connection is disengaged while the band remains gripped by the feeder. The handle which operates the feeder may then be swung in the opposite direction to actuate a member which pushes the wrapped article around the nose of the tool in such manner as to bend the band about its buckle and thus to retain the desired tension therein, after which the band may be cut off at a position within the nose of the housing.
