  • Patent number: 5067532
Abstract: An apparatus includes a conveyor system for conveying tubes, having respective self-sealing closure members, sequentially to a station whereupon the conveyor system is temporarily halted. At the station, a clamping device having a clamp lowers to prevent movement of the tube. An arm moves in the direction of the tube to enable a hollow needle to penetrate the closure member of the tube. A metering pump enables a predetermined volume of a fluid, preferably liquid agar, to be introduced into the tube. Following release of the needle from the closure member, the conveyor systems moves to enable another tube to arrive at the station.

  • Patent number: 4424837
Abstract: A mounting collar for mounting a catalyst oriented packing loader levelly, centrally, and at a fixed axial height in the central axial accessway of a reactor vessel is disclosed. The collar is a rectangular box that sits fixedly, either by fitting tightly into the accessway or by being attached to the part of the vessel surrounding the accessway, and symmetrically about the reactor centerline over the accessway. It has a flat bottom surface that provides a level mating surface with that part of the vessel on which it sits. Its top surface bears slots into which the carriage of the loader fits in a cross lap joint, interlocking manner. The slots are located such that the loader distributor is centered on the axial centerline of the reactor.

  • Patent number: 4422151
Abstract: A liquid handling apparatus capable of being used as a fraction collector, sampler, dispenser, diluter or the like utilizes a microprocessor and three stepping motors to move a liquid handling tube suitable for dispensing, sampling or the like in two horizontal directions and in a vertical direction with respect to an array of test tubes or similar containers. The apparatus is capable of operating in several modes of dispensing and withdrawal operations, including modes based on the number of drops dispensed or the time spent over each container. The pattern of the movement of the liquid handling tube or dispensing head is selectable to suit the mode of operation of the liquid handling apparatus as well as the type of container and the number of containers being used at a particular time.

  • Patent number: 4415011
Abstract: To collect a series of liquid samples each of which has a fixed volume in a corresponding series of sample bottles, a sample collector includes a control circuit that initiates the sampling at preset time intervals or each time a preset volume of liquid has flowed past the collector as indicated by a flow meter. To control the volume of each sample, an optical liquid interface detector within the flow passage of the sample collector initiates counting of the revolutions of the pump and after a pre-selected number of counts, the control circuit terminates the pumping. The optical liquid interface detector includes a light-emitting diode on one side of the flow passage and a phototransistor on the opposite side to detect the interface of the liquid.

  • Patent number: 4410020
Abstract: A sensor syringe or hollow needle arrangement for the automatic withdrawal of a liquid sample from a liquid contained within a vessel. A duct is enclosed in a sheath or jacket-like manner by a light conductor possessing an inlet for an optical source and an outlet leading to an optical detector. During sample withdrawal there is utilized the change in the reflection behavior of the lower end of the light conductor upon its immersion in the liquid in order to control sample withdrawal.

  • Patent number: 4402349
Abstract: A mechanical process for filling the tubes (3) of tubular reactors with granular solids, e.g. catalysts, wherein two or more streams of material, e.g. of different catalytic activity, can be introduced in a controlled manner into each tube (3) which is to be filled, from two or more stock vessels (1,2) via two or more dispensing devices (MI, MZ) mounted above the upper tube end plate (13). By this process, different thermal/catalytic reaction profiles can be achieved over the length of the tube, or in certain groups of tubes within the tubular reactor, with substantially less time being required for filling the tubes (3).

  • Patent number: 4399846
Abstract: A mechanism for the granulometric distribution of solid particles being loaded into a vessel of relatively large dimensions, such as a process reactor, blast furnace, silo, incinerator, dryer, etc., from equipment of small dimensions in relation to the vessel, includes a feed hopper which has an outlet opening that can be variably positioned within the mechanism to introduce the solid particles into a chamber located above the uppermost ends of a plurality of concentric, inclined, preferably conical or pyramidal surfaces. The latter define respective generally downwardly directed free flow paths for the particles to conduct them to a lower location where they enter the upper ends of a corresponding plurality of concentric sets of descending tubes. The discharge ends of the tubes where they feed into the vessel being charged are disposed in a symmetric array.

  • Patent number: 4394876
Abstract: A filling machine for filling containers as they are advanced by a conveyor. Valved dispenser assemblies are moved in an upright closed loop course above the conveyor and move in the direction of advance of the conveyor during the lower half of the closed loop course and in the opposite direction during the upper half of the closed loop course. Fluid pressure operated valve actuators are provided for operating the valves on the dispensers between their open and closed positions and control mechanism is provided to control application of fluid pressure to the valve actuators in timed relation to the movement of the dispenser assemblies in their closed loop course. Provision is also made for no container-no fill operation.

  • Patent number: 4381067
Abstract: The invention concerns a feeding device for pre-sterilized objects contained in internally sterile receptacles, for sterile packing plants. The device substantially comprises a chamber within which a sterile atmosphere is created at a pressure slightly higher than the atmospheric pressure, which communicates, by means of a valve-operated aperture, with a sterile environment into which the objects are to be transferred. The receptacle containing the objects is secured in correspondence with a second aperture in the chamber, a sterile atmosphere is created within the chamber and the lid of the receptacle is removed mechanically. The objects drop to the bottom of the chamber and by acting upon the valve, are transferred to the sterile environment.
