  • Patent number: 9863929
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method and device for evaluating a wooden board with an elongated direction. Data indicating fiber orientation over the surface of the board is acquired and for a number of board sub-portions a nominal local modulus of elasticity, MOE, is determined based on the fiber orientation data and a nominal material parameter. A nominal global MOE in the elongated direction for the wooden board as a whole is generated and compared with a secondary global MOE. Based on the fiber orientation data and this comparison an estimated local modulus of elasticity, MOE, in said elongated direction is generated for a number of board sub-portions. This data may be used e.g. for reliable strength grading of wooden boards.

  • Patent number: 7347234
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for optimizing the veneer yield in veneer peeling. The contour of the log to be peeled is determined and the peeling axes at the ends of the log are determined by simulating the veneer yield. The desired veneer yield is determined at least as two veneer products having their own grades. These desired veneer products serve as basic values for the optimizing calculation. The maximum grade of the veneer yield is calculated, based on the dimensions and grades of the veneer products, as well as by iterating the places of the peeling axes and simulating the peeling process. When the peeling axes of the log ends giving the maximum grade yield have been found, the log is placed according to these peeling axes in the lathe and peeled into a veneer web to be cut with a clipper into said desired veneer products.

Abstract: A method of creating a decorative inlaid floor includes the first step of providing a cutting implement, such as a router, which is operable to machine an inlay recess in a finished wood floor. The next step is to position the router over a section of the floor and move the router in a particular manner so that the desired inlay recesses are machined. The operating and movement step requires that the decorative pattern be predetermined and a control program or NC tape be generated so as to control the drive motors which are associated with each of four slide assemblies. Once the desired inlay recesses are machined into the main floor, the control program is modified by scaling it up to a larger size and is then utilized on a panel of a contrasting material. A typical example would be to select a contrasting wood for the inlay elements. The reprogrammed router is then located over the second material panel and operated so as to machine a larger inlay recess in that second material panel.

  • Patent number: 5547002
Abstract: A press machine having a frame with a central channel projecting along a length thereof. The channel slidably guides a piece of lumber along a processing path. Press wheels are mounted to longitudinal supports extending along opposite sides of the central channel. One of the longitudinal supports is pivotally mounted at one end to the frame with a corresponding press wheel rotatably mounted at an intermediate point along the support. The press wheels are oriented to rotate about parallel axes and in opposite directions with adjacent sides thereof overlapping opposite sides of the processing path. The press wheels are spaced apart from one another such that adjacent arcuate portions of each press wheel are located immediately adjacent the processing path to frictionally engage a leading end of a piece of lumber conveyed along the processing path.

  • Patent number: 5440859
Abstract: Defects in wooden boards, such as knots, knotholes or cracks, are repaired by forming an opening in the board at the site of the defect and forming a plug that fills the opening. In some forms of the invention the opening has a shape which interlocks the plug to the board. In another form of the invention, the plug is held in place by a transversely extending resilient member that is embedded in the plug and which is under tension which causes edge portions of the member to bite into or bear against the adjacent wood. Forming the opening includes cutting away bark encasement tissue that may adjoin the defect which encasement can cause a discoloration upon painting of the board and may eventually loosen. In some forms of the invention, cracks are repaired by making plural saw cuts along a crack to form the opening with the saw having a different angling relative to the board during each saw cut.

  • Patent number: 5418034
Abstract: The present invention is a veneer laminate comprising a first veneer sheet as one surface, a second veneer sheet as the other surface of the laminate with its grain running substantially parallel to the grain of the first sheet, and a sheet of paper of a width of substantially the same width as the first and second veneer sheets bonded to the inner surface of each of the veneer sheets. The fibers of the veneer sheets in a direction substantially normal to the grain of said veneer sheets are broken at spaced intervals sufficient to permit the flexing of the laminate about a tight radius of an object of less than about 90.degree..

  • Patent number: 5361813
Abstract: An apparatus and method for making wood patches wherein an elongate piece of wood patch stock is inserted longitudinally into an end of the apparatus. The wood patch stock is incrementally moved toward cutting blades by a clamp mounted on a carriage. A channel guides the elongate into a cutter clamp, which immobilizes the elongate patch stock for cutting by the cutter blades. The cutter blades pass transversely across the clamped elongate patch stock to cut a wood patch. The cut wood patch is blown into an exit chute, and the process is repeated.

  • Patent number: 5181445
Abstract: An improved automatic board cutoff saw that maintains better positional accuracy at higher board speeds is disclosed. The improved automatic cutoff saw includes an overhead belt conveyor including a first belt for starting, stopping and advancing the board in frictional engagement therewith over a substantial length both upstream and downstream from a crosscut saw station, as well as a second belt conveyor disposed beneath the first belt conveyor near an infeed region of the crosscut saw station for engaging the underside of the board during its advancement through therethrough. One of a pair of rollers disposed on a pivotal arm of the overhead belt conveyor, the arm being pivoted by tension in the first belt, is urged into a position whereby a board, which may be of scant height, nevertheless is positively, frictionally engaged by both belt conveyors at least during the critical infeed phase of the board-advancing operation.

  • Patent number: 5106666
Abstract: Composite particleboards and methods for manufacturing these particleboards are provided in which a plurality of discrete lignocellulosic particles are bonded together to form a core and then hot pressed with a plurality of reinforced strips having a thickness of less than about 6.4 mm for improving the bending strength of the particleboard structure. Both the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity of particleboard materials are demonstrated to have been improved significantly.

  • Patent number: 5034259
Abstract: The process begins with a single board, for instance a flat grain board, of selected dimensions. The single board may be clear or not or may be cut and rejoined to remove defects. The board is then sawn in a selected manner and the resulting boards are bonded together by gluing to form a remanufactured board, in such a manner that the glue lines are substantially invisible. In one preferred embodiment, a flat grain board is rip sawn and then edge glued to form a vertical grain board of selected dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4971124
Abstract: A sliver patching method and apparatus cuts a long slender groove in a small dimension high-grade wood product to remove long slender defects lying along the grain of the wood product. A wood sliver corresponding at least partially in size and shape to said groove is inserted in the groove and secured by adhesive. Because the sliver is narrow and follows the grain of the wood product, the patch is hidden within the natural wood grain pattern and the wood product may be used for high quality finish applications.
