Delimbing Patents (Class 144/343)
  • Patent number: 9374948
Abstract: A tree harvesting system includes a loader and a delimber. A camera system mounted on the delimber permits an operator to view an interaction area between a delimbing saw or toping saw and the tree being cut while the operator remains safely in a cab of the loader. The camera system provides image data to a display system located in the cab of the loader, and the image data may be viewed and/or processed to provide information about the interaction area, physical data about the tree, or some combination thereof. Advantageously, the tree harvesting system may allow for more accurate saw cuts at a preferred location of the tree, which in turn may result in a higher dollar amount and more efficient distribution of sticks to the mills.

Abstract: A portable and remotely controlled motor and chain/bar apparatus that can trim limbs in excess of about 60 feet from the ground level in an extremely safe manner. An operator on the ground can remove a limb from a safe distance exceeding about 50 feet from where the limb would fall or be lowered to the ground. A motorized chain/bar assembly is secured to a small platform which can easily be lifted for tree delimbing. For safety and stability, the chain/bar cutting platform is secured to all sides of the limb to be cut. Once in position, the operator by applying power to the unit, starts the cycle as the motor chain/bar carriage travels to the top of the platform, the motor/chain/bar rotates from a vertical to a horizontal position and as the motor chain/bar is engaged it travels in a downward motion towards the lower section of the platform creating the pressure required to complete the delimbing process.

Abstract: A multi-axis controlled self-climbing tree trimmer used for shaping and severing peripheral growth from a tree is provided herein. The trimmer typically includes a structural segment hinged together to form a rigid chassis that surrounds a tree trunk climbing segment and a trimming portion. The climbing portion is retained within the structural segment in the form of a number of inward-extending carriages containing one or more rollers for gripping the tree trunk during climbing, and the trimming portion may include a rotatable split ring gear containing centrifugally rotating trimming blade members and/or a cutting tool on a positionable arm. When rotated, the blade members unlatch and pivot, into the trunk of the tree to effect controlled trimming. The system may utilize a multi-axis control system that uses linear interpolation, circular interpolation and coordination of all axes to enable the trimmer to follow an XYZ contour selected by a user.

  • Publication number: 20130025193
Abstract: A tree trimming method that is related to a convex method of pre-determined angular trimming of deciduous trees. The methodology uses pre-determined angle cuts for deciduous vegetation to re-orient new growth and shape shade trees, shrubs and ornamental trees. This pre-determined “convex cut” makes the curved cuts reorient the tree limbs to a pre-desired radial shape and encourages the tree limbs to re-orient and grow. This results in the deciduous tree canopy that is round or radial in shape. The pre-determined angle cutting proves useful for either on the outside perimeter or for clearing inside the tree canopy for power lines. Essentially any pre-determined angle of clearing or directional shaping to re-orient new growth can be done with this cutting method.

  • Patent number: 6550503
Abstract: A tree delimbing system which utilizes a “drive-through” gate assembly having a plurality of pre-dimensioned apertures formed therein for removing tree limbs from tree trunks of various dimensions. Each aperture is dimensioned to selectively receive a plurality of tree trunks of varying diameters for subsequent limb removal. A single gate structure pivots from an upright (vertical) position to a lowered (horizontal) position upon impact with a skidder with attached felled trees. The impact of the skidder forces the gate down for tree transport therethrough. Once the trees have cleared the gate, a counter weight attached to the gate by cable returns the gate to its upright position. The trees are then rearwardly pushed through the apertures in the gate by the skidder to remove the limbs. The gate assembly forms an independent and stationary structure with anchors for securing the structure within surrounding terrain.

The flail means if further designed to eject material striped from the tree stems in a controlled fashion from the apparatus. Other safety features contain and prevent uncontrolled ejection of material striped from the tree stems. The flail means is further designed to assist the tree stem feeding by frictionally moving the tree stems into the apparatus with the action of one of the flail drums; and thus reducing wear and tear on the circle loader. The expanse of the feeding opening is designed to accommodate larger diameter and more numerous tree stems resulting in more efficient, faster, and safer delimbing and debarking.

  • Patent number: 6474377
Abstract: A self-propelled, climbing tree trimmer for severing branches from a tree (68) consisting of a support ring (12) divided into two equal parts, with a hinge (18) connecting the ring parts together, thus permitting it to be axially rotated apart to surround a tree. A channel ring (30) in two equal halves are joined onto the support ring, and a similar two piece rotatable ring gear (40) is juxtaposed on top of the channel ring in a revolvable manner. A number of pivoting knife blades (46) are attached to the ring gear so as to tilt inward when rotated, and a ring gear drive motor (62) interfaces with the ring gear rotating the ring gear at a speed which tilts the blades sufficiently to engage and cut fronds or branches from the tree upon which the trimmer surrounds.

Abstract: A delimber having a standard carriage and a delimbing boom, the delimbing boom slidably mounted through the carriage. A drive module is detachably connected to the carriage for use in moving the boom relative to the carriage. Two different types of booms and up to three different drive modules, each with a different drive, can be provided. The boom and module selected to give the operating characteristics desired by the operator are connected to the carriage. Drive transfer members, in the form of cable or chain drives, are connected between the selected drive module and the selected boom. The module carries a variable displacement hydraulic motor. The motor is connected by a gear box to the drive transfer member. On delimbers using cable drives, at least one end of each cable is connected to the delimber with a hydraulic tensioner.

Abstract: A method for cutting trees (18) in the vicinity of a power line (10) using a topping saw (17) suspended from a helicopter (15) in such a way that the helicopter is flown in the direction of the power line (10) so close to the electricity wires (12) that the topping saw suspended from the helicopter cuts the desired tops of the trees. The cutting line (14) of the topping saw (17) is determined in such a way that the helicopter is flown with the help of a video camera (21) attached to the suspension bar (16) for the topping saw at an angle of 45° and a monitor (22) placed in connection with the helicopter's cockpit so that the video camera is kept directed towards the electricity wire (12) of the power line (10). The distance (a, b) of the point where trees are to be cut from the electricity wire (12) is determined by adjusting the distance (h) of the video camera from the cutting blade (20) of the topping saw (17).

  • Patent number: 6363981
Abstract: In the operation of wood cutting machines such as delimbing machines which use chain saw cutting devices, it is common to either position the lubricating oil reservoir above the chain saw cutting device to create a gravity-fed system or couple a pump apparatus to the chain saw cutting device. Both arrangements may limit the flexibility of placement of the components comprising the lubrication system. The present invention provides a lubrication system for a wood cutting machine in which a receptacle receives lubricating fluid from the reservoir by use of a source of supply pressure within the receptacle. A source of discharge pressure operates on the receptacle to transport the lubrication fluid to the cutting chain device.

  • Patent number: 6167926
Abstract: An improved self-aligning tree delimbing apparatus for use in conjunction with a knuckle boom loader having an inner frame member pivotally mounted and concentrically received within an outer frame member, which is rigidly attached to a base member. Pivotally mounted within the inner frame member is a tree delimbing cutter head assembly having opposing pairs of tree guide arms and tree delimbing arms pivotally mounted thereon, thereby allowing for simultaneous multi-dimensional pivotal motion of the cutter head assembly within the frame members. Such motion allows the cutter head assembly to easily align with the longitudinal axis of the trees being delimbed, thereby increasing the efficiency of the apparatus while reducing the binding stresses and necessary force applied by the knuckle boom loader.
