  • Publication number: 20020074063
Abstract: The invention is related to a method and an apparatus for dissecting a log into boards, the log being adapted to be displaced on a longitudinal conveyor in a longitudinal direction. For determining the board length, it is prior art to cut the log at its periphery by means of a cross-cut saw prior to dissecting the log into boards. As the cross-cut saw is stationary, the determination of the cutting depth is effected by displacing the log transversally. In the case of larger cutting depths, the log must be displaced back in the transversal direction after effecting the cross-cut so that a board of desired thickness may then subsequently be dissected from the log by means of a band saw. During that back displacement, it may happen that the log slips on the longitudinal conveyor so that the dimensional accuracy is lost.

The limbs are positioned in a space defined laterally between a pair of posts (34, 38 or 80, 82) on one side (14) of a frame (12, 78) and a second pair of posts (36, 40 or 36', 40' or 86, 88) on the opposite side (16) of the frame (12, 78). A windlass (50, 52) is supported at the upper ends (46, 48) of the posts (34, 38 or 80, 82). A cable (60, 64) extends from the windlass (50) either downwardly and around the girth of the limb bundle (B), and then hooks on itself (62), to form a noose around the limb bundle (B), or it extends from the windlass (50) down to and around a pulley (68) then upwardly and over a mid portion of the limb bundle (B'), and then down to a dead end connection (66) at a lower portion of the frame (12). In either case, tightening of the cable (60, 64) imposes a squeezing force on the limb bundle (B, B').

Abstract: A process is described, with the aid of which panel-type workpieces to be manufactured from a panel blank may also be provided with flat face and/or end face bores in the course of their manufacture. For this purpose, the panel blank is displaced transversely to the cutting plane into a stop position, the flat face bores pertaining to one of the workpieces to be manufactured are subsequently made in the one flat side of the panel blank. To make the further flat face bores for the workpiece, the panel blank is then transported further in a clocked manner through predetermined paths in the same direction and bored after each advance. Upon completion of all of the flat face bores, the panel blank is displaced in a clocked manner in the opposite direction into predetermined positions, fixed after each advance, and lastly severed. For the end face boring, the panel blank is displaced in the direction of advance through a path corresponding to a side length of a workpiece and subsequently clamped and severed.

  • Patent number: 4691751
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for sawing a tree trunk and for treating a slice of wood of uniform thickness sawn off the trunk. In the first method, the trunk dimensions and shape as well as the biological quality of each section of the trunk both in the lengthwise and the crosswise direction are defined along with the sawing process, and this information is taken into account while treating the trunk. This method is characterized in that the production programme, which comprises various articles, i.e. product components, of different measures and qualities, is recorded (a) before the actual sawing process. The trunk is sawn into two halves in the middle (b), or the heart slice is removed therefrom (i). The longitudinal quality borders of each trunk half are defined on the basis of the sawn face and recorded (c), and further the shape and size of the trunk half are measured and recorded (d). The quality information and the measuring results are combined (e).

  • Patent number: 4682639
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting a veneer piece into equal sections includes a main conveyer for feeding the veneer piece in a direction transverse to the wood fibers thereof and a cutter disposed in the main conveyer for cutting the veneer piece along the feeding direction thereof. A straightening unit is provided at the upstream position of the cutter for controlling the orientation of the veneer piece on the main conveyor in such a manner that the fibers precisely extend along the transverse direction of the main conveyer, the unit including a plurality of retractable stoppers capable of projecting from the main conveyer to stop the veneer piece for a predetermined time. A multiple conveyer system extends from the downstream end of the main conveyer to transport the sections of the cut veneer pieces to a single feeder at different timings, the feeder conveying the sections to an apparatus for forming seam plates.

  • Patent number: 4600044
Abstract: A method and apparatus for joining fittings, particularly wooden stair rail fittings. The apparatus includes a mitre jig and a double slot jig. The mitre jig has a base with a curved bed for supporting the fitting to be cut. A wall is used with the base that has on it a scale for indicating the angle of incline of the stair being worked with. A recess in the wall accommodates a saw and a slot in the wall receives the saw blade. The fitting is placed on the base with its seam aligned with the particular indication for the stair's angle of incline. A saw is then used to cut the fitting. The double slot jig is used to cut slots into the ends of fittings for joining them. The double slot jig has a base, a tray, a double-bladed cutting apparatus, and a frame. The tray supports the fitting to be cut and is movable on the base. Appropriate stops are used to correctly position the fitting on the base and to limit the movement of the tray on the base. A drill with double circular blades can be used.

  • Patent number: 4513799
Abstract: Cutting horizontal, cantilevering objects of splittable material, such as de-barked tree trunks and the like is carried out with the aid of a guided, endless circulating saw chain (10), the upper cutting part of which is moved from below and upwards through the object. The lower edge portions of the cut surfaces at the cut are allowed to bear against each other under the action of the bending moment of the cantilevering object, while the return portion of the saw chain in the cutting area is kept free from the cut surfaces. The saw chain is guided by a chain guide (12) extending curvilinearly under the object and guides the return part of the chain. The chain guide and the guided return part are both outside and below the object during the whole of the cutting operation, while the upper cutting portion of the chain runs straight between the end points of the curved portion of the chain guide.

Abstract: A cutter system for pipe casings and the like, including a generally "C" shaped cutter assembly body having an always open side entry and exit area leading into the centrally located cutter area with an annular trackway extending an exemplary 290.degree. about the operative center of the cutter system. A cutter sub-assembly is carried on the trackway for back and forth movement of an exemplary 110.degree. in each direction with the sub-assembly carrying two, directly opposed rotating cutter blades which cut the pipe casing as the sub-assembly is moved to and from on the trackway. The two blades travel in each direction a minimum of one-half their arcuate spacing difference and preferrably less than their arcuate spacing difference, producing a full 360.degree. cut. The cutters are radially moved in and out by a reciprocating yoke assembly. The cutter body assembly is pivotally mounted onto a telescoping boom attached to for example a work vehicle.
