  • Patent number: 4372792
Abstract: An overhead electric conductor with optical fibres loosely housed in the bore of a central core, which bore also contains a greasy water-impermeable medium 4, is manufactured by causing a preformed elongate metal member of U-shaped transverse cross-section and the optical fibres to advance in the direction of their lengths, the rate of advance of the fibres being restrained. As the U-shaped elongate member is transversely folded around the optical fibres greasy water-impermeable medium is injected into the bore of the elongate metal member under a controlled pressure. The consistency of the greasy water-impermeable medium the pressure and rate at which it is injected into the bore and the degree of restraint imparted to the optical fibres 3 is such that, in a predetermined length of the conductor, the length of the optical fibres exceeds the length of the bore by a controlled extent, preferably 1 to 3%.

  • Patent number: 4284455
Abstract: Method and apparatus for continuously-developing multi-layer tubing from plural ribbons of wrapping material of indefinite length layered in seriatim upon a continuously-formed mandrel serving as a temporary supportive base for the tubing. A driven cylindrical winding mandrel is rotatable about its longitudinal axis and has a plurality of longitudinally-extending serrations on its exterior periphery. A stationary driving helix is operatively associated with the winding mandrel means for feeding a workpiece in ribbon form through the driving helix. Initial pressure means proximate the driving helix allows the continuous curling of the workpiece radially inwardly into adjacent helical convolutions about the winding mandrel. This impresses serrations on the convolutions mating with the winding mandrel serrations in the generation of the helical coil configuration and the definition of a developing formed mandrel as a supportive base.

  • Patent number: 4259139
Abstract: A reinforced plastic pipe is produced by feeding a plastic tube along a feed path while directing a reinforcement strip into a path around a tube so as to wind it into spiral coils which are spaced radially outwardly of the tube and including subsequently pushing the coils in an axial direction while deflecting them inwardly to cause their diameters to be reduced so that they engage around the surface of the tube. The tube is advantageously fed directly from an extruder in a tacky state so that the reinforcement strip will be immediately bound to the surface when it is directed into engagement therewith. The apparatus for carrying out the method includes a thin tubular mandrel disposed around the tube which is formed by an extruder and a winding device is associated with a reel supply of the reinforcement strip so as to feed it around the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4106709
Abstract: A helical induction coil of large diameter which is to be served with a protective band is suspended from a driving roller having a substantially horizontal axis of rotation so that the coil axis is substantially horizontal. A serving device is supported on the respective convolution to be served and also on immediately adjacent convolutions at the lowermost region of the coil for advancement in the longitudinal direction of the convolutions. Spreading rollers spread the immediately adjacent convolutions from the respective convolution to permit the serving device to advance. The driving roller frictionally entrains the coil and thus rotates the same about the coil axis and the spreading device is advanced at the same speed as but in the opposite direction than the respective convolution so that the position of the serving device diametrally opposite to the driving roller relative to the coil is maintained.
