  • Patent number: 9290937
Abstract: This invention provides suspension fabric product, methods of making such product, and methods of installing such product, in fall protection systems used in metal building construction. The fabric product is presented Z-folded on a core, with essentially all surface air removed, and wrapped in a protective plastic wrapping which extends into the roll alongside outer layers of the roll of fabric. Essentially all surface air is removed from the Z-folded fabric at a compression station as the roll is being fabricated. Use of the roll includes extending a shaft through the core, elevating the roll to a working height at the roof elevation, temporarily mounting the shaft to existing roof structural members of the building being constructed, and drawing a leading edge of the fabric from the roll and along a run of the space between next adjacent ones of the purlins and across the space between first and second ones of the rafters.

Abstract: A forming device for gathering the width of a traveling web is disclosed. The forming device includes opposing arrays of flute-forming bars that can be interlaced to define therebetween a longitudinal flute-forming labyrinth effective to reduce the width of a web traveling therethrough by a preselected take-up ratio. • Patent number: 6623416
Abstract: A single facer for corrugated paperboard of the type using a very large diameter fluted bonding roll and a much smaller diameter fluted corrugating roll which engages the bonding roll to provide a corrugating nip. The small diameter corrugating roll is made to be resilient by utilizing a thin walled roll shell so that it is capable of inward deflection in the corrugating nip in order to cushion impact and absorb the deflection as the rolls interengage along the nip. This cushioning deflection absorbs vibrational movement due to chordal action of the interengaging flutes, and thereby reduces noise level and roll wear and improves the quality and consistency of corrugation. A modified flute profile, compensating for flute pitch variations between the large diameter bonding roll and small diameter corrugating roll, assures uniform flute-to-flute engagement in the corrugating nip.

Abstract: A corrugator belt for a corrugator machine includes a base having two sides. One of the two sides is the face side of the corrugator belt when the belt is in the form of an endless loop on a corrugator machine. A layer of polymeric resin material is coated onto the face side of the base. The polymeric resin material provides the corrugator belt with an increased coefficient of friction relative to corrugated board, enabling the belt to pull corrugated board more readily through a corrugator machine.

Abstract: A corrugating roller unit is moved smoothly between a first reference plane and a second reference plane at different heights by a roll-out apparatus having a set of moving support device. A first moving support device supports the corrugating roller unit when the corrugating roller unit is in contact with the first reference plane. A second moving support device supports the corrugating roller unit when the corrugating roller unit is in contact with the second reference plane. A positioning device keeps the second moving support device in contact with the second reference plane when the second moving support device is providing the support for the corrugating roller unit. When the second moving support device moves the second reference plane to the first reference plane, the positioning device prevents the second moving support device from restricting movement of the corrugating roller unit.

The apparatus includes a guide bed (2) which has grooves extending parallel or inclined to each other in the direction of movement of the material. The apparatus also has holding-down devices (5) arranged opposite the grooves of the guide bed (2) so as to urge the web passing between the surface of the guide bed (2) and the holding-down devices (5) into the grooves of the guide bed (2) to obtain corrugations in the web. Finally, at the outlet end (4) of the guide bed (2) is an apparatus or substance which substantially prevents the formed corrugations from springing back to the original condition. A process for producing a strip and an absorbent article containing corrugated strips are included.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for producing a multi-ply corrugated paperboard (105) by repeatedly laminating multi-ply corrugated mediums (102, 103) with different pitches and widths between top and bottom liners is disclosed. This invention thins the paperboard and improves the compressive strength of the paperboard so as to substantially reduce the package volume. In the process for producing the multi-ply corrugated paperboard, a first corrugated medium (102) is continuously laminated to a liner (101), thereby forming a single-ply paperboard. The first corrugated medium (102) has predetermined flute pitch and flute peak height. Thereafter, a second corrugated medium (103) is continuously laminated to the single-ply paperboard, thereby forming the multi-ply corrugated paperboard (105) having improved shock absorptivity and compressive strength against a vertical load. The second corrugated medium has optionally selected flute pitch and flute peak height.

  • Patent number: 6089296
Abstract: An apparatus for preconditioning a medium web on a corragator before fluting the medium web during the manufacturing process of corrugated paperboard uses steam flows and pressures to press the medium web against a hot plate assembly. A plurality of elongated steam showers are located within a steam chamber secured to the preconditioning apparatus. The steam chamber wall structure includes a sealed web inlet and sealed web outlet for the medium web. The velocity and pressure (e.g., average steam pressure within steam chamber approximately 0.1 to 0.3 psi) of steam injected into the steam chamber holds the medium web against hot plates to promote heat transfer from the hot plates to the medium web. In addition, the medium web is heated directly by the latent heat of steam condensation, and also moistened directly by the condensation of the steam. A vacuum may or may not be used to increase the pressure of the medium web against the hot plates.

Abstract: Corrugating rolls for forming corrugated paperboard medium are given a flute valley profile having a narrow channel along the valley base between arcuate segments of the valley base that parallel the channel on opposite sides of a radial plane of symmetry. This valley base channel is of such depth as to relieve the fiber compression stress between cooperatively nipping flute tip and valley surfaces along the axial plane between respective corrugating rolls. One advantage of the invention is to increase the on-line time of plated rolls by limiting accelerated wear of the plating in the valley base channels of the rolls. The invention also provides an improved corrugating medium characterized by flute tips which are relatively less compressed as compared to adjacent flanking regions.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying adhesive to the flutes of corrugated board to bond a face thereto. An applicator roll is provided with a uniform thin coating of adhesive by a flexible bar urged toward the surface of the applicator roll. A rider roll is provided adjacent the applicator roll and at the same height to form a vertical space for passage of the board therebetween so that the amount of glue applied to the tip of the flutes is directly proportional to the speed of the applicator roll. The space between the applicator roll and the rider roll is precisely controlled to minimize the amount of crush or deformation of the flutes during the application of the adhesive thereto. The dwell time in which the flutes are in contact with the adhesive layer on the applicator roll is reduced by minimizing the size of the rider roll and wrapping the face substantially around the rider roll.

Abstract: A paper corrugator machine has a closed loop for delivering warm adhesive from a source to a pan from which the adhesive is applied onto the crests of the corrugated paper flutes. To insure a delivery of the correct amount of adhesive to the flute crests, a predetermined amount of adhesive is first accumulated in a graduated column. Then, the adhesive delivery feed is switched from the closed loop to the graduated column. A detector senses upper and lower limits of the amount of the adhesive in the column. The rate of the delivery of adhesive is determined by how long it takes for the predetermined amount of adhesive to be delivered from the column to the corrugating machine. Responsive to this determination, the corrugating machine may be adjusted to apply more or less adhesive to the flute crests.
