  • Patent number: 6026883
Abstract: A self-contained apparatus for placement of discrete fiber element tows on a mandrel or other tooling. The apparatus carries a spooled fiber element supply, which is directed to a compaction roller over a short, non-convoluted path through a cut/add module having a knife assembly for severing a discrete tow from a continuous fiber element filament, and a drive assembly for feeding the tow and restarting feed of a new tow after severance of the prior one from the filament. The apparatus is particularly suitable for sequentially laying up superimposed, or stacked, tows to define rib-like stiffeners of composite material for reinforcing composite shell structures, and grids of such stiffeners. Methods of using the apparatus are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6006805
Abstract: An apparatus and method for first reliably and accurately aligning the shafts of golf clubs in consistent orientation relative to corresponding club heads during assembly thereof, and second for performing inductive curing on the aligned golf club. A golf club is supported in an address position in a combination alignment/inductive cure station. The club shaft is supported by an inclined V-shaped channel, and the club head is supported in a club head support which includes a gel-filled trough for conforming to the sole of the club head. The leading edge of the club head is aligned against two substantially vertical alignment posts extending from the club head support, and reference graphics on the shaft are used in combination with an alignment panel to visually obtain the desired relative orientation of the shaft and club head. The club is then clamped in place, and an inductive heating element heats the joint of the shaft and club head to activate a bonding agent.

Abstract: A coater and method allow for an essentially dry coating process. In this process, a coating is continually applied to a casting drum. This casting drum will rotate to move the coating passed infrared drying units. The exterior face of the casting drum is cooled. The temperature of the coating will rise except at an area adjacent the casting drum. This will reduce the water concentration of the coating except at the area adjacent the casting drum. This arrangement prevents the coating from bonding to the casting drum. Therefore, the coating can easily be removed from the casting drum and applied to a final substrate.

  • Patent number: 5858153
Abstract: In the manufacture of multichamber tubular containers it has been found that the inner divider walls should be bonded to the exterior wall by means of a band sealing method. In the band sealing method there is a band that contacts the upper film and a band that contacts the lower film that are to be bonded. In the present processes the upper band contacts the inner divider wall while the lower band contacts the exterior surface of the outer wall of the tubular container. In order to prevent the marring or otherwise putting a defect into the exterior surface of the outer wall the temperature of the lower band is maintained at a lower temperature than the upper band. This will decrease the temperature of the exterior surface of the outer wall and prevent imperfections in the exterior surface of the outer wall. The advantage is a multichamber tubular container without any imperfections in the exterior surface. This enhances the overall appearance of the tubular container.

  • Patent number: 5693174
Abstract: An apparatus for attaching a molding to the peripheral edge of an article such as a glazing used in an automobile. A molding having a groove in its one side is extruded from an extruder. The molding is guided so that the leading end of the molding contacts the edge of an article which is held by a robot. The groove of the molding is expanded by a guide section, and the edge of the glazing enters the groove thus expanded. The robot then rotates the glazing, while pressure is applied to the molding so that the molding adheres to the glazing. When the glazing is rotated one turn, the molding is cut. The molding may be heated from the side having the groove, and cooled from the opposite side having a lip. This facilitates the attachment of the molding without causing any deterioration of the shape of the lip.

  • Patent number: 5662767
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying an elongate continuous adhesive-coated reinforcing material such as a string or tape to the surface of a moving substrate is disclosed. A length of the adhesive-coated reinforcing material is heated in a heating unit to the flow point of the adhesive and is thereafter pressed onto the substrate by the rotatable peripheral surface of a wheel that is mounted for rotation on an axle. The heating unit includes an elongate hollow outlet portion having a generally constant radius of curvature that encourages the softened adhesive to concentrate on the bonding surface of the material. A heat-transferable tube is removably located in the heating unit. The heat transferable tube is easily replaced if it becomes worn or fouled with adhesive. Adhesive that separates from the material as it exits the heating unit is intercepted and applied to the substrate. An axle cover prevents the heated, reinforcing material from contacting and interfering with rotation of the wheel.

  • Patent number: 5620554
Abstract: An apparatus for making a composite roofing material includes a reel support for reels of each of a vulcanized rubber sheet, a polymeric film and a fleece matting and pinch rollers which advance the rubber sheet from its reel through a path including an abrading roller, a cleaning and scrubbing vat, a stretcher, a heater and then, along with the polymer film and the matting, through a pair of compression pinch rollers. The cleaning and scrubbing vat effectively removes the non-stick talc coating from the vulcanized rubber. The thus cleaned rubber sheet is heated by the heater to a temperature which is sufficient to melt the polymeric film as it comes into contact with the vulcanized rubber sheet. The melted film acts as an adhesive to cause the fleece matting to adhere to the vulcanized rubber sheet as the rubber sheet, the polymeric film and the fleece matting are compressed together by the compression pinch rollers.

  • Patent number: 5618373
Abstract: A multiplicity of closely spaced thermoplastic polymer filaments are extruded from an elongated orifice plate through a draft protected free-fall zone onto a rotating cylinder surface, landing between about 30.degree. before and after upper dead center of rotation. Filament extrusion velocity and cylinder rotational velocity are coordinated to pile the filament into a mat continuum of accumulated filament laps. Filament temperature and viscosity are coordinated to provide thermoplastic bonding at the filament lap crossings to integrate the continuum. The rotating cylinder carries the matted continuum over an arc of about 150.degree. to 210.degree. to about lower dead center of rotation where the mat peels from the cylinder surface. After separation from the cylinder surface, the mat is supported by a transitional air jet on to a horizontal run surface of a traveling endless belt for consolidated support until the lap crossing bond joints are securely set.

  • Patent number: 5616199
Abstract: A device for electronically seam fusing similar or dissimilar multiple polymeric materials by placing the materials between two opposing plates, wherein the plates have cooling tubes disposed within the plates and have the required combination of heating elements, non-stick heat barriers, and configuration enhancers disposed thereon. The opposing plates are then closed by a force which is regulated by a control feature which also governs the timing, length and temperature that is utilized by the heat elements and cooling tubes of the invention. Upon completion of the electronic seam fuse cycle, the multiple layers of polymeric materials are fused together, and separated if desired, thus creating a seam that is as strong or stronger than the individual material. The selection of seam fusing process parameters is determined by employing an optimization process that considers the impact each process parameter has in combination with one another.
