Patent number: 5879496Abstract: Method for applying heat shrinkable segments of material (16) (e.g., labels or ornamental bands) to articles (25) (e.g., containers or ornaments) which have convex surfaces. The segment (16) is attached at both ends by adhesive to the convex surface (46) (or the trailing end of the segment (16) may be lapped over and adhesively attached to the leading end of the segment (16)). The adhesive attachments are confined to a narrow sector, e.g., the sector of widest diameter, or a circumference of a sphere, leaving major portions of the segment (16) on either side of such narrow sector unattached. These major portions are then heat shrunk onto the convex surface (46).Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1995Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: B&H Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventors: Lyn E. Patent number: 5804029Abstract: An apparatus for attaching leaves of a film of a plastic material to laid flat workpieces made of a film of plastic material, consists of a frame with a plate or a table over which the workpieces are continuously conveyed by means of a conveyor device. In a gap of the table plate, there is arranged a pair of conveyor rollers mounted in the frame, and having a roller gap substantially aligned with the table surface; the bottom roller of the pair is a counterpressure roller and the top roller is a suction cylinder. A conveyor cylinder cooperating with the suction cylinder successively delivers the leaves to the suction cylinder. A fishtail nozzle directed towards the roller gap blows heated air into the roller gap in a controlled manner so as to weld the leaf to the workpiece. The suction roller prevents the conveyor cylinder from being heated by the hot air in an inadmissible manner.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1996Date of Patent: September 8, 1998Assignee: lscher HoInventors: Fritz Achelpohl, Richard Feldkamper, Andreas Kampschulte, Uwe hn

Patent number: 5709770Abstract: An apparatus for applying heat transfer labels, disposed on a web, to containers. In one embodiment, the apparatus is intended for round, non-tapered containers and comprises a continuously rotating turret, a container transport system for continuously delivering containers to and away from the turret and a web transport system for moving a web containing heat-transfer labels into position for label transferring. The turret includes a rotably driven shaft and a plurality of cup assemblies arranged in a circle around the shaft and coupled thereto. Each cup assembly includes a cup used to hold a container, the cup being rotably driven independently of the shaft and in a required direction. A nozzle assembly is associated with each cup assembly and is used to secure a container within its respective cup and, if necessary, to inflate the container to impart sufficient rigidity thereto for labelling. Each cup assembly and its associated nozzle assembly together define a container holding station.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1995Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Avery Dennison CorporationInventors: Syed A. Patent number: 5628847Abstract: An improved system for applying labels to pharmaceutical vials or the like includes a heating tunnel assembly having an insulated heating chamber defined by a first stationary portion and a second removable portion, with a heater positioned within the insulated heating chamber. The assembly includes movable mounting structure for mounting the second removable portion of the insulated heating chamber for movement between a first position engaged with the first stationary portion, and a second retracted position remote from said first portion. An actuator is provided for moving the second portion of the insulated heating chamber into its engaged position, while a biasing spring resiliently biases the second removable portion of the chamber toward the retracted position. As a result, the heating tunnel assembly will automatically be opened to prevent products from overheating or burning in the event of an emergency that disables the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1995Date of Patent: May 13, 1997Assignee: McNeil-PPC, Inc.Inventor: Harry Sowden

Patent number: 5587096Abstract: A de-labeler made with easily available structural elements which cooperate to remove a normally non-removable label from a labeled surface of a casing for magnetic media, film, and the like, without using a solvent of any kind. The labeled surface is heated just enough to cause desired viscous deformation of a thin layer of adhesive, or a sufficient decrease of viscosity to loosen the label and enable it to be manually removed, preferably by adhesive failure of the thin adhesive layer. A typical pressure sensitive adhesive ("PSA") is heated to a temperature in the range from 32.degree. C.-65.degree. C., for an interval of time in the range from 5 to 30 seconds, in inverse relationship to the temperature at which the labeled surface is heated. The label is manually peeled away from the surface with a force in the range from 0.5 lb-force to about 10 lb-force, without distorting or otherwise damaging either the casing or the magnetic recording medium encased therein.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1994Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Inventors: Gary S. Patent number: 4966644Abstract: An apparatus for selectively attaching strips of an encodable material bearing a heat activatable adhesive to a document or for removing the strips therefrom generally comprises a strip attachment assembly and a strip removal assembly. The attachment assembly includes a set of document feed rollers and strip feed rollers which deliver the documents and the strips to an alignment subassembly where the document and the strip are properly aligned. A cutter cuts the strip to match the length of the document and the aligned document and strip pass by a heater which heats the heat activatable adhesive. The strip secured to the document by the heat activatable adhesive is sealed thereto by a pair of sealing rollers. The strip removal assembly comprises a passageway having a heater extending along one side and an obstruction extending across a portion of the passageway.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1989Date of Patent: October 30, 1990Assignee: Zip Strip, Inc.Inventors: Jack G. Patent number: 4960480Abstract: In a magnetic disk cartridge, a magnetic disk sheet is accommodated in a casing in such a way that it may be rotated. A heat-sensitive adhesive is provided on one side of a raw sheet material composed of the same material as wear-resistant members which are to be bonded to the casing. The raw sheet material is cut into wear-resistant members and each of the wear-resistant members is heated in order to melt the heat-sensitive adhesive while the wear-resistant member is supported with a suction force. Then the wear-resistant member is released while the heat-sensitive adhesive is in a molten state, and it is pressed against the central portion of the inner surface of the casing. Thus the casing has a wear-resistant member bonded to a central portion of the inner surface of the casing.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1989Date of Patent: October 2, 1990Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventor: Shoji Iwamoto

Patent number: 4734713Abstract: A thermal printer is provided wherein data inputted from a data reader, such as a pen scanner, is compared with previously stored data. In the event that a match occurs, the printer prints predetermined information such as a sorting code on a thermal print medium. The thermal printer has a data input, data memory, program memory and an I/O port for communication with external devices. A controller controls the various components and directs the printer to print when the match occurs. Should a match not occur, the non-matching data is stored in data memory. The print medium such as a label or the like, may then be affixed to the same article or merchandise from which the data reader initially read the data.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1986Date of Patent: March 29, 1988Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha SatoInventors: Yo Sato, Tsutomu Ono
