Abstract: Process and apparatus for dispersing fibrous paper stock that includes delivering an aqueous fibrous paper stock, pressing some water out of the aqueous fibrous paper stock to form a highly consistent coarse fibrous paper stock, and introducing the highly consistent coarse fibrous stock into an effective area of a mallet roll having circulating mallets which cooperate with fixed peripheral impact sections. In this manner, the highly consistent coarse fibrous stock is loosened and distributed. The process also includes transporting the highly consistent fibrous paper stock into a dispersing machine, and dispersing the highly consistent fibrous paper stock in a dispersing machine.

  • Patent number: 6280567
Abstract: The invention relates to a process system and a method for preliminary treatment of disintegrated cellulose-containing material, preferably wood chips, prior to pulp digestion. The process system and the method according to the invention make use of a process vessel intended to function both as a so-called chip bin and as a pre-impregnation vessel. The characteristics of the invention are that a sloping steaming vessel is arranged downstream of the process vessel for the purpose of separating an excess of pre-impregnation liquid from the pre-impregnated cellulose-containing material, that the sloping steaming vessel is arranged for supplying steaming vapor which preferably has been generated by flashing of extraction liquor from a pulp digester, and that the sloping steaming vessel is connected to a chip chute communicating with a condenser for connection to a system for managing foul-smelling process gases.

  • Patent number: 6228213
Abstract: This process involves feeding cellulose into an extruder with an acid solution. The extruder is comprised of a screw and a barrel. The screw is rotated so as to pressurize the cellulose, and the cellulose undergoes acid hydrolysis and forms microcrystalline cellulose. The invented process can be accomplished by using pure cellulose or a lignocellulosic material as the starting material. If a lignocellulosic material is used, then a basic solution is added to it and the lignocellulosic material is fed through an extruder so as to obtain a mixture comprising lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose. The lignin and hemicellulose are extracted and the remaining cellulose is processed, as discussed previously, to form microcrystalline cellulose.

Abstract: A system is provided for feeding wood or annual plant chips to continuous digesters for producing paper pulp. The system comprises two stages: in a first, impregnation stage, the chips are impregnated with a sufficient amount of chemical reagents to allow them to be hot-digested by impregnation in alkaline or alkaline-earth solutions, then drained. In the case of annual plants, the plants are mechanically mixed with alkaline and/or alkaline-earth reagents and a minimal quantity of hot water to obtain a wet fiber-like mixture. In the second stage, the material impregnated above is pumped directly into a pressurized digester (1) by a hydraulic piston pump (2). A plug (4) formed in the pipe (3) between the pump and the digester provides the required seal and pressure resistance.

Carbon dioxide concentration is identified over the relevant operational ranges and maximum concentration is identified for full capacity/optimum efficiency operation. Specific methods are described for controlling carbon dioxide concentration including purging a portion of the recycle stream, counter-current scrubbing of the recycle stream with an alkaline solution and passing the recycle stream through an adsorbent material. Contaminants entering the system also may be reduced by directing the purged recycle stream, which is relatively oxygen rich, into the dewatering press where pulp consistency is increased. In this manner nitrogen surrounding the pulp is displaced by oxygen and thus, does not enter the bleaching/ozone system with the pulp.

Thereafter the fibers are permitted to expand. The pressure shocks cause liquid to be expelled from the fibers without permanent deformation of the fibers occurring. When the fibers expand, liquid is adsorbed. These steps are repeated until the fibers are completely impregnated with liquid. This prevents the formation of fiber knots when the fibers are substantially dried before being formed into paper. The elastic pressure shocks can be applied by a rotating paddle wheel which intermittently elastically compresses the fibers against an elastic surface of a container.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for the displacement impregnation of cellulosic chips material with digesting liquid. Cellulosic chips material and liquid are fed from a source to a high pressure transfer valve whereat the pressure of the chips and liquid is boosted. The chips are fed from the high pressure transfer valve through a feed system to the topmost portion of a vertical treatment vessel, the vessel having a topmost portion and an impregnation zone in an upper portion thereof below the topmost portion. A countercurrent flow of digesting liquid in the vessel impregnation zone is established to impregnate the chips material with digesting liquid, and displace the water and minerals therefrom, and liquid withdrawn from the top of the treatment vessel is withdrawn into the feed system. The withdrawals insure that essentially no free water enters the impregnation zone. A chips plug is established at the vessel top through which all withdrawn liquid must pass.

Abstract: Lignocellulose fiber containing chips, preheated with steam liberated from a previous chip defibration, are dewatered and then defibrated in an atmosphere of saturated steam and in the presence of backwater and suspended in backwater to form a pulp suspension whereafter wet sheets are formed from the pulp suspension, water is mechanically removed from the wet sheets and recycled as backwater to be supplied simultaneously, with dewatered chips, to the defibration step and to form a new pulp suspension and said wet sheets are dried.
