  • Patent number: 4915789
Abstract: For uniform and regular adjustment of a diaphragm blade within the elastic deformability thereof, the diaphragm blade provided at the slice opening of a headbox of a papermaking machine is movable by means of adjusting elements driveable by adjustment motors. The adjusting elements are arranged in an appropriate spaced relationship substantially parallel to the diaphragm blade and coupled therewith in order to apply a force upon the diaphragm blade at connecting locations thereof. At each of the adjustment motors there can be individually set or adjusted during an adjusting operation prior to starting the adjustment motors the momentarily desired thrust speed and the momentarily desired thrust distance or travel for the respective adjusting element. All adjustment motors are simultaneously started and simultaneously stopped subsequent to reaching the desired position or location of the diaphragm blade.

  • Patent number: 4902384
Abstract: A wet press of a paper-making machine includes a pair of rolls defining a roll gap through which the paper to be treated and belt-shaped felt are simultaneously conducted. The felt is guided in a closed loop path by additional rolls which include a tightening roll. The tightening roll can be tilted to reduce roll vibrations by tightening the felt to set vibratory marks formed in the felt at an angle relative to the transverse width of the felt and the roll gap. A controllable positioning device is provided which includes a motor operated by a controller during predetermined time intervals or as a function of actual vibrations sensed at the pair of rolls forming the roll gap to automatically vary the tilt angle.

  • Patent number: 4726883
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for selectively moving the slice lip of a headbox of a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a housing secured to the headbox with the housing defining an elongate chamber. A control rod has a first and a second end with the first end being connected to the slice lip and the second end defining a longitudinally-threaded surface. A rotatable member is disposed within the chamber, the rotatable member defining an internally-threaded bore which cooperates with the threaded surface of the control rod such that when the member rotates within the chamber, the control rod is moved axially relative to the housing for selectively moving the slice lip. A motor is rigidly secured to the housing and is drivingly connected to the rotatable member for selectively rotating the rotatable member relative to the housing.

  • Patent number: 4707222
Abstract: In an extended nip proess including a stationary support member, a hydraulically actuatable press shoe supported on and extending along the support member and a rotatable counter-roll opposed to and extending along the direction of the press shoe, there is a flexible, tubular press jacket which rotates around the support member and which is sealed so as to be inflatable by air. Before rotation of the counter-roll starts, the press jacket is air inflated and expands to partially wrap around the counte-roll. After rotation of the counter-roll and the press jacket begins, and only after a set minimum velocity has been exceeded, then the press shoe is fluid pressurized against the press jacket. At the time, the air pressure in the press jacket is reduced. Various control devices control the feed of pressure liquid to the press shoe and the feed of air to the press jacket until and then after a minimum speed level is exceeded.

  • Patent number: 4466873
Abstract: A vacuum dual control system for the flat box section of a papermaking machine. The system includes a plurality of serially arranged vacuum boxes and a header interconnecting the boxes. A vacuum pump is operatively connected to the boxes in a manner so that vacuum applied to the boxes is a function of the speed of the pump. A first control operates the pump to run at an initial substantially constant high speed for providing vacuum necessary to dewater a web in its initial condition. The web is passed over the boxes so that suction applied therethrough by the pump running at its initial substantially constant high speed dewaters the web until the condition of the web changes sufficiently to cause the vacuum in the last box to increase to a predetermined maximum level. A second control is provided with set point adjustment capabilities to enable selection of a predetermined set point corresponding to the predetermined maximum vacuum level.

  • Patent number: 4384922
Abstract: An installation for charging a multi-ply headbox, wherein the mixing pumps of the stock infeed systems for the stock which is diluted with water, i.e. the stock slurries, are driven by a single drive motor by means of a common shaft. Additionally, a pressure differential-regulation device is provided for the fine tuning or coordination of the pressures of the stock suspensions in the headbox. Signals are inputted by means of pressure feelers or sensors to the pressure differential-regulation device. As a function of the deviations from a set or reference value there are activated regulation valves which are arranged in bypass lines shunting the mixing pumps. The bypass lines or conduits flow communicate with sieve water containers connected with the suction side of the mixing pumps. Through these measures there is avoided mechanical damage to the headbox, particularly to the partition walls arranged internally thereof.

  • Patent number: 4374703
Abstract: A system for the control of a paper machine headbox having sensors for the measurement of the parameters of the process and actuators of the members of the process, functionally connecting at least most of the sensors to an at least equal number of actuators via a multivariable centralized control member which makes it possible to control each actuator by the taking into account and processing of the measurement information of one or more sensors, and causing the measurement information to act on each of the sensors functionally connected to the actuators on one or more members to obtain a resultant action in which only the parameter measured by this sensor is influenced while the secondary repercussions on the outer parameters are eliminated. Another characteristic, the invention permits rapid intervention taking into account the information on the substance flow rate at the headbox, eliminating the usual disturbing influences due to the hydraulic values of the process.

  • Patent number: 3981767
Abstract: In a paper machine headbox system including a stock pump and a headbox receiving stock from the stock pump, the stock pump is shunted by a by-pass line. The stock flow to the headbox is primarily controlled by controlling the by-pass flow in the by-pass line by use of a by-pass flow control valve. When the by-pass flow control valve approaches one of its operating limits, i.e. either full open or full closed, the flow to the by-pass line is manipulated so as to reposition and maintain the by-pass flow control valve within its operating limits. A logic inhibit means, logically responsive to by-pass flow control signals, inhibits the stock flow rate in the main stock line.
