  • Publication number: 20030145969
Abstract: In this publication it is described a method and an arrangement for moving parent reels (1) between at least two handling stations with the aid of a parent reel cart (2, 3), wherein at least one of the stations a parent reel (1) is carried rails (15). At the first handling station, the parent reel is transferred to the parent reel cart (2, 3), the parent reel (1) is locked to the cart (2, 3), and the parent reel (1) is moved to the next handling station. The parent reel (1) is transferred to the next station and the parent reel (1) locking is released. According to the invention the parent reel is moved between the station and the cart by means of transfer carriages (8), which grip the ends of the parent reel and move independently over the junction between the carrier rails (15) of the station and the parent reel carts's means (13, 14) for carrying parent reels.

  • Publication number: 20030116296
Abstract: A method for increasing caliper control of a fibrous web as the web is wound onto a roll is provided. The method includes winding the fibrous web containing cellulosic fiber onto the roll to form a wound product and conveying the web through a nip prior to winding the web onto the roll. The nip is configured to apply a pressure to the web to selectively decrease the caliper of the web as the web is wound onto the roll. Also disclosed is a system for controlling the caliper of the fibrous web in which a calender device forms a nip through which the fibrous web is conveyed. The system includes an adjustment device, which is configured to adjust the nip of the calender device to increase pressure on the fibrous web as the diameter of the roll increases thus increasing uniformity of the caliper of the fibrous web.

  • Patent number: 6536704
Abstract: In the method for controlling the structure of a reel, a continuous paper web (W) is reeled around a reel spool (2) to form a reel (R), and one or more variables are measured from the web (W). When a particular, predetermined change occurs in the variable, the lateral oscillation of the web is changed, by means of which the web is guided to different locations in the reel (R) in the axial direction of the reel spool (2). The change can be implemented by starting the oscillation or by changing the oscillation in progress. The change can be implemented on the basis of the changes in the transverse profile of the web (W).

  • Publication number: 20020139499
Abstract: A multi-reel apparatus for use in a drying section of a papermaking machine allows a web to be continuously wound without interruption. The apparatus includes a web support and a pair of vertically stacked reeling stations located along an inclined portion of the web support. Each reeling station has at least one reeling device operable to hold and rotatably drive a core onto which the web can wound to form a roll. Each reeling device is further operable to move the core into engagement with the web on the web support to initiate winding of the web onto the core, and to move the core away from the web support when the roll is fully wound. Winding is alternated between reeling devices, allowing the completed roll to be removed and a new core to be loaded at one reeling station while the other reeling station continues in full winding operation.

  • Patent number: 6440268
Abstract: A partially unwound roll is moved for splicing with a subsequent parent roll, and the united web is rewound. The torque transmitting means include side clamping mechanisms engaging only the end surfaces of the parent rolls. In one aspect, an automated off-line apparatus and method splice tissue webs from different parent rolls in a finishing unit, and substantially continuous impacts on each web during unwinding splice the webs together. In one aspect, an apparatus and method are disclosed for the production of a soft, high bulk uncreped throughdried tissue web by depositing an aqueous suspension of papermaking fibers onto an endless forming fabric to form a web and through drying the web to final dryness without any significant differential compression to form a dried web having a bulk value of about 15 to 25 cubic centimeters per gram or greater, an MD Stiffness Factor of 50 to 100 kilograms, a machine direction stretch of 15 to 25 percent, and a substantially uniform density.

  • Publication number: 20020060036
Abstract: A dry end of a tissue machine is made shorter by close-coupling a reel-up to the drying section and supporting the web from the drying section to the reel-up by a foil or a belt such that web stability is maintained, thus allowing high-speed operation. The foil's downstream edge can form a nip with the paper roll and nip load can be controlled by controlling pivotal movement of the foil. The reel-up can include a calendering belt for calendering the web as it passes through a nip between the belt and a reel drum supported on the belt, and a rotatable reel spool on which a paper roll is wound in nipping engagement with the reel drum. Alternatively, the reel drum can be eliminated and the paper roll can be supported on the belt. A composite shaftless core for winding is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6355139
Abstract: A high bulk tissue web is made by depositing an aqueous suspension of papermaking fibers onto a forming fabric to form a web, drying the web, winding the dried web to form a plurality of large diameter parent rolls wound on a core, and transporting the parent rolls to an unwind stand having torque transmitting clamping means for engaging opposite end surfaces of the parent rolls. A backing plate is connected to and rotatable with an unwind shaft connected to an electric drive. An inflatable bladder is mounted on the backing plate. • Patent number: 6328852
Abstract: In manufacturing a moving web, such as a tissue sheet, the web is transported at very high speeds, often in an unsupported manner, which can result in unstable operations regarding handling and winding of the web. This is particularly true in the region between the creeping blade and the reel for a lightweight, low modulus tissue sheet that is characteristic of a high-quality, soft tissue base sheet. To provide an improved means of controlling the tissue web during manufacture and to improve the manufacturing rate, an apparatus and method of stabilizing the moving web that incorporates a creeping blade foil, one or more aerodynamic sheet stabilizing foils, and a roll foil in a specific relationship to each other is disclosed. This method has been shown to improve the stability of a moving tissue web, allow for a higher rate of operation, and enable the production of softer tissue basesheets.

  • Patent number: 5901918
Abstract: An apparatus and method for winding tissue webs into a parent roll is disclosed which results in greater uniformity in sheet basis weight, machine direction stretch and bulk when comparing the corresponding sheet properties taken from representative locations throughout the roll. The apparatus and method includes engaging the tissue web against a reel spool with a flexible member such as a transfer belt which traverses an unsupported span between two support rolls. The web is transferred from the transfer belt to the parent roll as the parent roll is urged against the sheet/transfer belt at a point within the unsupported span. The resulting deflection of the transfer belt is detected and, in response, the reel spool position is changed to control the deflection at a desired level. Accordingly, a predetermined light nip pressure can be applied to the roll as the tissue web is wound thereon and large parent rolls of high bulk tissue can be manufactured with desired properties when unwound.

  • Patent number: 5738760
Abstract: To accomplish a web transfer, which in reliability is comparable to the one obtained with a closed draw, in any operating environment, but especially where it is desirable to transfer a fast running tissue web (4) from the drying section of a tissue machine, e.g., a Yankee dryer (2), to a reel-up (3), a web support device (10) extends across the width of the web (4) and along a predetermined run of the web (4) from the Yankee dryer (2) to the reel-up (3). The web support device has a support surface (11) formed by a series of plate member assemblies (23) having means for creating a flow of air in the direction of the web run. Between the web (4) and the support surface (11) the flow of air forms an air layer (15) of reduced static pressure, so as to stabilize the web (4) against flutter. The predetermined run may extend through a calender (7) and past scanner equipment (8). Pneumatic tail threading capabilities may be included.

  • Patent number: 5591309
Abstract: A method for making uncreped throughdried tissues is disclosed in which the dried tissue sheet is fully supported by a fabric up to the reel. This method eliminates the open draw between the throughdryer and the reel and thereby eliminates sheet breaks normally associated with such open draws. In addition, the machine direction strength of the sheet can be reduced since the added strength is not needed to traverse the open draw normally present in current processes. Reducing the MD strength in turn enables the production of more square, less stiff sheet, which improves the tactile properties of the product.
