Abstract: Systems and methods for forming fiber webs, including those suitable for use as filter media and battery separators, are provided. In some embodiments, the systems and methods may involve the use of one or more fiber mixtures to form a fiber web. The fiber mixtures may flow in different portions of a system for forming a fiber web that may be separated by a lamella, and may join at a fiber web forming zone to produce a fiber web having multiple layers. The amount of mixing of the fiber mixtures at or near the fiber web forming zone may be controlled to produce fiber webs having different structural and/or performance characteristics. In some embodiments, the systems and methods described herein can be used to form fiber webs having a gradient in a property across a portion of, or the entire, thickness of the fiber web.

  • Publication number: 20090084515
Abstract: The invention provides a mold of paper pulp and paper pulp articles shaped by the mold, where the mold of the paper pulp is made up of top mold body and bottom mold body. A space appears as both bodies are combined together, where the top and bottom bodies have corresponding protrusions and hollows respectively. Each has a plurality of through holes, which are set at the surfaces and the lateral sides of the top and bottom mold bodies for accommodating pulp flowing in and pulp pumping pipes plugging in and further for the shaft to hold the mold for rotation, which helps in lifting the average covering in the space encircled by the top and bottom mold bodies, to shape solid paper pulp articles.

  • Publication number: 20020088592
Abstract: A process for increasing the tactile properties of a base web without adversely effecting the strength of the web is disclosed. In one embodiment, the process includes the steps of placing a base web between a first moving conveyor and a second moving conveyor. The conveyors are then wrapped around a shear-inducing roll which creates shear forces that act upon the base web. The shear forces disrupt the web, increasing the softness and decreasing the stiffness of the web. The shear-inducing roll typically has a relatively small diameter. In some applications, more than one shear-inducing roll may be incorporated into the system. Base webs made according to the present invention have been found to have improved void-volume and fuzz-on-edge properties.

  • Patent number: 6136153
Abstract: In an assembly and method for producing a non-woven web of fibrous material utilizing the foam process, an edge seal for the former is provided which can include the introduction of substantially free foam into the edge seal for providing lubrication and to prevent leakage of fiber-containing slurry from the former. Web formation is primarily due to a mechanical force provided by nip rolls, although suction tables and other suction devices are also provided to carry away foam removed by the nip rolls, or at other stages. The foam/fiber slurry may be formed by introducing the foam tangentially into a tank at a plurality of locations to establish a vortex, and by introducing fiber into the top of the tank, and pumping from the bottom of the tank. The foam/fiber slurry may be introduced using a structure that can be reciprocated toward and away from the inlet of the former, and which has a number of changes defined by pivoted or flexible plates to form distinct strata at least at the start of web formation.

  • Patent number: 4490212
Abstract: The papermaking machine contains an endless inner dewatering band which extends or wraps with its inner side or surface around two series or successively arranged sections of dewatering surfaces. In each wrap-around section thus defined the inner dewatering band is convergently guided or brought together with a portion of a respective endless outer dewatering band towards an infeed throat or gap and a dewatering section following the same. From each dewatering section the associated outer dewatering band is returned towards its related infeed throat or gap. Two headboxes each of which is directed towards a related one of the infeed throats or gaps are provided, so that there are formed two fiber layers or plies which are to be joined. To achieve a compact and simple construction the series or successively arranged sections of the dewatering surfaces are formed at a common dewatering element which is centrally arranged relative to the infeed throats or gaps.
