As a result of the delivery of compressed air, the delivery of the sand mixture is retarded and even interrupted. • Patent number: 4947923
Abstract: The method and apparatus are based on the use of a casting process in which expendable patterns are made of a low density material, then evaporated by molten metal as the metal advances into the cavity created by the evaporation of the pattern material. The outer supporting material of the cavity is an unbonded granular material of sufficient grain size distribution. This unbonded material is vibrated in defined partial volumes of the whole volume of a holding vessel called a pouring container and compacted to a predetermined density around the expendable pattern so that it fills all cavities of the expendable pattern prior to the introduction of molten metal into the container to displace the pattern. The compacting vibration is performed in several independent zones to achieve uniform compaction and to prevent pattern deformation. The pouring container follows a loop via a conveyor system preferably through four operation stations.

Abstract: To permit close matching of compaction pressure being applied to foundry mold making material, such as foundry sand, to the shape of a mold pattern (2) in a pattern box (3, 4), individual fluid pressure is applied to a plurality of press plungers (7) located on a pressure plate which is moved towards the sand in the mold box at a high rate of speed, the press plungers being biassed by fluid pressure to have a maximum difference (.DELTA.H) in stroke of penetration depth of at least 30% of the height (H) of the mold box; individual valves (14) can apply compressed air to individual cylinders under control, for example, of a microprocessor; the valves can be located in a matrix arrangement (FIG. 3). The method and apparatus can be used in combination with explosion or pressure impulse compaction and fluidizing of the foundry sand.

  • Patent number: 4791974
Abstract: In a method of operating an apparatus with a mold chamber (8) being supplied with fluidized mold sand (2) from a supply chamber (1) under air pressure applied through suitable air channels (3), and in which the pressure in the supply chamber (1) is increased gradually from a low to a high value to avoid turbulences in the initial filling stage and ensuing weak spots in the molded article, while at the same time achieving a short total filling time and a high degree of compaction during the final stage, the new feature is that vacuum is applied through air-permeable mold chamber walls (9,10), preferably before increasing the pressure in the supply chamber (1), thus avoiding the formation of air pockets in depressions in the mold chamber walls, that could otherwise cause reduced compactness and density in protruding parts of the shaped body (not shown) being formed in the mold chamber (8).

  • Patent number: 4781236
Abstract: A method of producing a mold core from green sand, wherein green sand is blown into a mold cavity which is sized to be greater than the size of the mold core to be obtained, so that a preformed mold body is prepared. The preformed mold body is then compacted by a compacting die having a cavity recess which is sized in conformity with the size of the mold core to be obtained, until the preformed mold body size is reduced to the final stage. In consequence, the green sand is compacted to develop uniform distributions of strength and hardness over the entire portion of the mold core as the product.

  • Patent number: 4750540
Abstract: Foundry molding material is poured or pneumatically infed into a mold frame arrangement containing at least one pattern, a molding frame and a filling frame. Subsequently, the foundry molding material is compacted by a compacting arrangement containing, for example, any one of a compressed-air surge compacting device, a combustion-force surge compacting device, a pressure compacting device, a vibrational compacting device or a combined pressure-and-vibrational compacting device. Also during such compacting operation at least the predominant portion of the foundry molding material contained in the filling frame is displaced into the molding frame. During such compacting operation a preselected expanding gas is infed into predetermined local regions of the foundry molding material while such material is being compacted. As a result, there are formed zones of reduced packing density in the foundry molding material.

  • Patent number: 4620584
Abstract: A green sand mold filling system is formed of an air chamber box having a cover plate which supports a pattern. Air passageway holes, which communicate with the air chamber, extend through the plate and pattern at preselected locations, such as difficult to fill pockets, depressions and the like. An open top and bottom flask section is positioned over the plate and around the pattern. Filling sand is poured into the flask and is mechanically compacted or squeezed therein. During the filling and squeezing, a vacuum is provided in the air chamber and, therefore, through the air passageway holes, to assist the sand flow into and the sand densification at the pre-selected locations. Thereafter, the vacuum is discontinued and pressurized air is provided in the air chamber and, therefore, through the air passageway holes, to assist in separation of the compacted sand from the pattern and plate and to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the cavity formed in the sand while the flask section is removed.

  • Patent number: 4460032
Abstract: In foundry core-blowing, a blow box snugly fits a plunger which moves through it during the blowing step. In effect, the plunger pushes all of the fluidized sand mix out of the blow box and into the core box. This solves problems which have long impeded the use of quick setting sand mixes in blowing of cores and the like. With more conventional sand mixes better and more uniform packing of the sand in the mold is believed to be achieved. Two measuring feeders are provided supplying two different sand mixes which are non curing when separate but fast setting when mixed. They are mixed in a rapid mixer, dumped into a charging tube which quickly dumps the mix into a blow box. The plunger moves through the charging tube and then through the blow box, cleaning both and aiding in the blowing of all of the sand mix into the mold or the blow tube leading to it. The tip of the blow tube has an internal lip which breaks off any residue or plug retained within this tube.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for producing one or more hollow sand cores suitable for casting moulds using a bipartite core box defining a mould cavity into which sand and a catalyst or a curing agent are introduced. The method includes the steps of establishing a pressure gradient which decreases from the interior to the exterior of a non-heated core box of porous material; introducing sand and a catalyst or a curing agent into the mould cavity defined by the non-heated core box; and directing the introduced sand and catalyst or curing agent against the interior surface of the non-heated core box, which step of directing, at least in part, is obtained by the pressure gradient established between the interior and exterior of the non-heated core box. The apparatus provides structure for accomplishing the above described method.

The foam-plastic pattern when contacted by the molten material decomposes and disappears, while a gas is generated from the contact between the molten material and the foam-plastic pattern. From this generated gas, by way of a suitable structure situated in a mold together with the pattern and granular material, an elevated pressure is created, and the molten material fills the space initially occupied by the foam-plastic pattern in the presence of this elevated pressure which is greater than atmospheric pressure.
