  • Publication number: 20090107647
Abstract: A tumbling unit such as a casting shake-out unit, rotary media drum, sand reclaimer or the like includes a cylindrical outer shell and a cylindrical inner liner. The inner liner is formed of a series of interfitting segments. The segments each have an inner surface, an outer surface, side edges, a front edge, a back edge, and two vanes extending from the outer surface. The side edges of the segments have a groove and the grooves of neighboring segments define a channel between the segments. A pin in the channel urges the neighboring segments apart to form a tight interfit among the segments in a row of the liner. The pin conforms in shape and size to the cross section of the vanes, and aligns with the vanes of the adjacent segments to form a continuous spiral upon the outside of the liner.

  • Patent number: 5388632
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for the production of piston castings, and, in particular, a die construction and method of use thereof are described, the die having a crown forming part (18) separable from a skirt forming part (12). In the method, when solidification of the casting occurs to an extent at least enabling the separation of the skirt forming die part therefrom to be allowed, and the die parts (20, 22) are separated, the casting is retained by the crown forming part (18) of the die. After a subsequent process step, such as the solidification of the remainder of the piston casting, and or the cooling of the piston casting by an air blast (64), the solidified piston is removed from the crown forming part of the die.

  • Patent number: 5372177
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided which allows the safe and inexpensive extinguishing and cooling of flaming wax emanating from an investment casting flash fire dewaxing furnace. Investment mold structures are disposed within individual cups which direct flaming wax material downwardly through individual openings in the furnace floor. Flaming wax is then extinguished within an extinguishing chamber by a stream of non-aqueous inert gas. The process makes flash fire dewaxing of investment mold structures efficient and safe and provides for easy recycling and reuse of the wax because it is not contaminated with water or other contaminant materials.

Abstract: An explosion treatment apparatus useful for confined shock exposure of materials as for removal of sand cores from finished castings and, in particular, cores in permanent mold castings in which a horizontally axised index device successively presents plural and substantially similar cavities to a position at which sealing, evacuating, fueling and ignition occur. This results in an explosion which occurs upon closure of each chamber. After the confined explosion, the cavity is opened and all cavities are indexed so that the fired cavity can be unloaded, the previously unloaded cavity can be dumped, the next adjacent cavity can be reloaded, and the reloaded cavity is presented to closure.

  • Patent number: 4211274
Abstract: An apparatus for separating castings from moulding sand is provided with a container revolving around the longitudinal horizontal or near horizontal axis. The side surface of the container is provided with suitable slots ensuring an inflow of air into this container. The slots are located at one or several points before a sieve wall located at the end of the container. The sieve wall is used for separation of the moulding sand from the castings. The side surface of such a container can be formed by a coaxial combination of cylindrical and/or conical drums of diameters increasing in steps toward the outlet opening of the container and thus forming annular slots. Air flow is initiated by a pressure difference inside and outside the container this being obtained by exhausting the dusted air and water vapor through casing of outlet opening and covering outlet opening.

  • Patent number: 4209055
Abstract: There is proposed herein a method and apparatus for cooling, drying and separating casting pieces and molding sand and wherein the apparatus includes an opening that extends lengthwise therethrough, the cooling operation being conducted by inducting air in a rotary drum that is contiguous to a first rotary chamber that is in juxtaposition relative to a stationary chamber. The sand is caused to pass through perforated areas within the apparatus while the casting pieces continue through the axial opening in the stationary chamber. A perforated divider wall disposed between the first rotary chamber and the stationary chamber permits passage of sand to a discharge valve and vents air to atmosphere. In a further embodiment of the invention a polygonal sieve is disposed between the rotary chamber and the stationary chamber, said sieve being a truncated pyramid and provided with guide foils.
