  • Patent number: 9002525
Abstract: Apparatus, systems, methods, and computer program products are disclosed for providing software updates to client devices. A client device (such as a thermostat) executes software to perform one or more functionalities of the device. Upon receiving an indicating that a software update is available, the device waits to download the software update until pre-download conditions are satisfied. Once the software update is downloaded, the device then waits to install the software update until pre-install conditions are satisfied. If the software update is non-critical and received during an initial installation of the device, the software update may not be installed until after installation of the device is complete. If the device is a thermostat, the device may delay installation of the software update until a controlled HVAC system in inactive. Control of the HVAC system may be disabled during installation of the software update.

  • Publication number: 20100132916
Abstract: A supplemental heating apparatus for use in conjunction with the coolant system of a truck engine provides a supplemental source of heat energy to the heat exchanger within a tanker trailer. The supplemental heating apparatus is activated when the truck engine is shut-off. A control system undertakes a testing cycle in which a circulator pulls coolant out of the tanker trailer and the temperature of the coolant is sensed after a delay of time so that the coolant from within the heat exchanger is tested. The burner draws fuel from the truck's fuel tanks to provide heat energy when the sensed temperature is below a threshold. The coolant is circulated between the boiler associated with the burner and the heat exchanger until the return coolant is raised above a second threshold. The testing cycle continues through a loop of a predetermined duration independent of the activation of the heating cycle.

  • Patent number: 7578341
Abstract: A control unit for an air conditioning system for a motor vehicle calculates a target blowing air temperature based on a temperature of a passenger's clothing detected by a no contact temperature sensor. An air conditioning operation is performed based on the calculated target blowing air temperature. In particular, when calculating the target temperature in the summer or in the winter season, a change of the detected temperature of the passenger's clothing is used, so that the change of detected temperature is reflected in the target temperature with a time delay.

  • Publication number: 20090159257
Abstract: A process and a system for regulating a continuous crystallization process which can be used especially for preparation of bisphenol A comprises a heat exchanger connected in a circuit to a crystallization apparatus. A heat exchange performance of the heat exchanger to cool an exit stream of the crystallization apparatus is established as a function of a feed stream supplied, in order to deliver by regulation an exit temperature of the exit stream. The heat exchange performance is calculated, and the calculated heat exchange performance is established in the heat exchanger with a time delay. The time delay prevents large temperature differences in the heat exchanger, so as to prevent fouling in the heat exchanger. With improved regulation quality, this leads to fewer production shutdowns and hence to improved productivity.

  • Publication number: 20090032236
Abstract: Fan coil thermostats can provide energy savings by, for example, not unnecessarily running a fan for longer than necessary or at a higher speed than necessary. Fan coil systems employing such a fan coil thermostat may be more energy efficient. A fan coil system may include a fan coil, a valve that controls fluid flow through the fan coil and a fan that blows air across the fan coil. The fan coil thermostat may include a controller that implements a control algorithm that may include an Auto fan speed mode. The controller may be programmed to permit a user to manually select a fan speed setting using the user interface. In response, the controller may initiate a timer, and may automatically return to the Auto fan speed mode once the timer expires.

  • Patent number: 7201219
Abstract: An air-conditioner is operated under one mode selected from among three modes, i.e., a cooling mode, a heating mode and an air-mixing mode. Conditioned air temperature is controlled by changing a cooling ability in the cooling mode, a heating ability in the heating mode, and a position of an air-mixing door in the air-mixing mode. When the operating mode is switched to the cooling mode or to the heating mode from another mode, the position of the air-mixing door is gradually changed to prevent an abrupt temperature drop or rise until a difference between a target temperature and an actual temperature becomes smaller than a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 6823935
Abstract: A heating or air-conditioning system for vehicles, having a heat exchanger through which a heating medium flows and which is arranged in an air duct through which air can flow, at least one air mixing chamber which has a warm-air inflow opening and a cold-air inflow opening, at least one closing member controlling the opening cross-sections of the inflow openings, and a shut-off valve which is arranged in the inflow or outflow of the heating medium to the or from the heat exchanger. For reducing the flow resistance in all operating modes, particularly during maximal cooling, the warm-air inflow opening is arranged in the air flow behind the heat exchanger, and a control system controlling the closing member and the shut-off valve is designed such that, with the shutting-off of the warm-air inflow opening, it closes the shut-off valve and, after the closing of the shut-off valve, changes the closing member into an open position which completely opens up the warm-air inflow opening.

  • Patent number: 6745947
Abstract: A vehicle air conditioner controls the air-conditioning automatically based on sensors detecting environmental conditions regarding the air-conditioning of a vehicle and based on an operational portion operable by a passenger. One of the sensors is a sunlight sensor for detecting the amount of sunlight incident into the vehicle. A signal detected by the sunlight sensor is modified to have a time constant by a time constant process. The modification is based on the elevation angle of the sunlight and the inside air temperature of the vehicle. The modified signal is used for automatic control of the air-conditioning.

  • Patent number: 5697552
Abstract: A thermostat for heating or cooling, operative to maintain an indoor air temperature to a limited setpoint range, is provided with a comparison circuit to prevent tampering intended to exceed a setpoint limit. A first temperature sensor responds to ambient air temperature and can include a first thermistor. A second thermistor is partly thermally isolated from the air, and senses a reference temperature that lags temperature changes in the ambient air. The two thermistors form a voltage divider coupled to one input of a differential amplifier comparator, the other input of which is coupled to a fixed voltage reference. When the ambient and reference temperatures exceed a predetermined temperature difference, the differential amplifier operates a relay that breaks a circuit including the contacts. This occurs when locally cooling the ambient air to generate a spurious call for heat (or vice versa).

  • Patent number: 5547017
Abstract: An system for controlling the operation of the circulating fan of a closed central air conditioning(CAC) system is disclosed. The system periodically activates and deactivates only the circulating fan after a preselected delay time from the normal running of the cooling and heating modes of the CAC system. The preselected delay time is adjustable based on non thermostat parameters and include parameters such as room volume size to be ventilated and the number of occupants in the room. The control can periodically distribute and mix ventilation air or spot-conditioned (humidified, de-humidified, or cleaned) air while the CAC system is not running in the heating, cooling or constant fan modes. The cooling and heating modes of the CAC system operate independently of the fan recycling control.
