Relatively Movable Packers Or Plugs Patents (Class 166/119)
  • Patent number: 5117912
Abstract: A method of selectively and variably positioning tubing within the generally horizontal section of a horizontally drilled well. A tubing string having a guide shoe secured to the end thereof is inserted into a portion of the horizontal section of a horizontal well. Smaller diameter tubing is then inserted through the tubing string and past guide shoe into the generally horizontal section. The smaller diameter tubing can be inserted to a point proximate the end of the horizontal section of the well or intermediate between the end and the guide shoe. The subterranean formation surrounding the generally horizontal section may be stimulated or treated by injecting a fluid via the smaller diameter tubing.

  • Patent number: 4928762
Abstract: A retrievable bridge plug and packer apparatus. The tool includes a packer settable by right-hand rotation and vertical manipulation of the tool string and a bridge plug also settable by right-hand rotation and vertical manipulation of the tool string. A disabling tool is provided to disable the packer during setting of the bridge plug so that the packer is not prematurely set. After setting of the bridge plug below the formation, the packer and disabling tool may be disengaged from the bridge plug. At this point, the disabling tool is disengaged so that the packer may be set above the formation. The packer is unset by pulling on the tool string, and the packer and disabling tool may be reconnected to the bridge plug. Again lifting on the tool string unsets the bridge plug so that the apparatus may be retrieved or reused. A method of treating a well formation is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4913228
Abstract: A dual string well packer which is anchored at a downhole location within the bore of a well casing string by relative longitudinal movement between the primary tubing string and the secondary tubing string. The well packer is set by applying tension via the secondary string. The well packer is released from its downhole location by applying tension via the primary string. The invention is particularly adapted for use in well completions that are subject to thermocycling such as steam injection wells. However, the anchoring and releasing mechanism of the present invention can be readily adapted for use with any dual string well packer. The present invention includes an improved method for well completion, minimizing tubing handling requirements during the installation and removal of the production tubing strings and associated dual string well packer.

  • Patent number: 4862961
Abstract: A retrievable tension-set packer, by itself, and in conjunction with retrievable tension-set bridge plug for use in field testing of oil well casings is disclosed. The retrievable tension-set packer is constructed to be set and sealed above an area of the oil well casing to be tested, while the retrievable tension-set bridge plug is constructed to be set and sealed in an area below the area of the casing to be tested. When used in conjunction with a retrievable tension-set bridge plug, the retrievable tension-set packer has a portion thereof which allows limited rotational movement for setting the bridge plug below the area to be tested, while the tension-set packer requires greater predetermined rotational movement to set the packer above the area to be tested.

  • Patent number: 4018272
Abstract: Disclosed is a retrievable, hydraulically set well packer which is locked in set position without need for tubing rotation and may be released from set position by shearing a retrieving link with either a straight pull on the production tubing or by the application of high pressure through the tubing. Dual, opposed cones are employed for retaining the packer slips anchored irrespective of the direction of the pressure differential acting on the packer and without need for an extra sleeve to transmit pressure induced forces to the cones. Compression seals are employed to hold the slips firmly anchored against longitudinal displacement in both directions without reliance on the presence of a pressure differential across the set packer. The seals are employed as two separate assemblies which are positioned above and below the slips to isolate a portion of the pressure induced forces from the retrieving link.
