Patent number: 10287835Abstract: A coiled adaptive seat is held to a smaller diameter for delivery with a tool that can feature a locating lug for desired alignment of the seat with an intended groove in the inner wall of a tubular. The release tool retracts a cover from the seat allowing its diameter to increase as it enters a groove. Alternatively the adaptive seat is released near the groove and pushed axially in the string to the groove for fixation. Once in the groove the inside diameter of the string is a support for a blocking object so that sequential treatment of parts of a zone can be accomplished. The blocking object is removed with pressure, dissolving, milling or disintegration leaving a narrow ledge in the tubular bore from the seat that can simply be left in place or milled as well. An E4#10 from Baker Hughes is modified for adaptive seat delivery.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2017Date of Patent: May 14, 2019Inventor: Stephen L. Crow

Patent number: 7077214Abstract: A packer element has a biasing member incorporated with it. The element is either fabricated with the biasing element in a relaxed condition and then the element is stretched prior to insertion downhole or the element is created around the stressed biasing member and is held in that position until allowed to relax downhole. In either event the release of the element increases its diameter while shortening its length. Preferably, an advancing swage triggers the release to allow the element to expand as much as it can go or to the maximum relaxed diameter, whichever is larger. The swage then, preferably, drives the relaxed element toward the borehole wall or the casing.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2004Date of Patent: July 18, 2006Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Ray P. Patent number: 5692564Abstract: A straddle tool is disclosed which ensures sequential setting of the packing elements through the use of lost motion mechanisms. Once the lower pack-off has been set, the upper one is set and an internal valve is opened to allow flow through the tool to actuate a downhole tool, such as an inflatable packer. An anchor prevents actuation of the pack-off tool unless it is extended into a profile for support of the tool. Inadvertent settings of the pack-off tool are prevented, such as in oversized casing where the anchors are already fully extended, by virtue of a distance-sensing mechanism on the tool. When a large distance is sensed by one or more sensors, the mandrel is locked to the setting collars, preventing relative movement which could set the pack-off elements.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1995Date of Patent: December 2, 1997Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: Robert T. Patent number: 4697640Abstract: Apparatus for sealing a well bore annulus. A mandrel includes non-elastomeric packer elements disposed thereabout. A first annular piston is received about the mandrel and is slidable upwardly against the packer elements to seal the same in a well bore. A bi-directional slip assembly is disposed about the lower portion of the mandrel and a second annular piston is slidable along the mandrel above the slip assembly for setting the same in response to downward piston action. The mandrel includes a pair of bores for communicating internal mandrel pressure to both pistons. An increase in mandrel pressure causes the first piston to move upwardly thereby sealing the packer elements in the bore and causes the second piston to move downwardly thereby setting the slips.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1986Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: Halliburton CompanyInventor: David D. Patent number: 4662453Abstract: A tieback packer apparatus and method for packing a well annulus above a gravel packed liner screen. The packer includes a body with a mandrel slidingly disposed therein. Originally, the mandrel is shearably pinned to the body. The body includes a lower packer support for a packer element annularly disposed around the mandrel. An upper packer support is also shearably pinned to the mandrel and includes a wedge. A plurality of slips are positioned above the wedge. Downward motion of the mandrel shears the shear pins and transfers force through a spring, thus forcing the slips toward the wedge and outwardly into gripping engagement with the well bore. The spring keeps the slips engaged while preventing excessive slip drag. Further downward movement of the mandrel sets the packer element into sealing engagement with the well bore. The packer may be retrieved by reengaging the releasing mechanism. Lifting sequentially unsets the slips, as well as unsetting the packer element.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1986Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Assignee: Halliburton CompanyInventor: David P. Brisco

Patent number: 4411435Abstract: A seal assembly for downhole use in a subterranean well comprises inner and outer concentric annular sealing elements adapted to seal between an inner mandrel and an outer housing. The sealing elements are mounted in concentric annular recesses defined in relatively axially movable seal carrier members. In a preferred form, a spring loaded mechanism is provided to bias the seal carriers axially towards each other, thereby exerting an axially compressive force on the sealing elements between them. The compressive force is sufficient to expand the sealing elements against the sealing surfaces of the mandrel and outer housing, whereby non-elastomeric sealing elements, or seal elements which have become effectively non-elastomeric, can be utilized. Releasable latches are provided for attachment of the seal assembly to the associated housing.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1981Date of Patent: October 25, 1983Assignee: Baker International CorporationInventor: David M.
