With Passageway Between Central Chamber And Space Above Packer Patents (Class 166/149)
  • Patent number: 9863217
Abstract: A magnetic cleaning tool for collecting ferrous debris in a wellbore and a method of cleaning a wellbore. The magnetic cleaning tool has a tool body for attachment in a work string, one or more magnets supported on the tool body, and a sleeve located around the tool body which is arranged to be moveable along the body to provide selective coverage of the magnets. Embodiments are described providing shear pins and spring loaded balls to hold the sleeve either over the magnets or free of the magnets. An expandable piston, moveable by action of a drop ball, is described to release the sleeve. The sleeve is arranged so that the magnets can be covered and therefore effectively inactive on run-in and during downhole operations, and uncovered to be active when pulled out of the wellbore.

  • Publication number: 20150090462
Abstract: A housing for a downhole tool, having a fluid vent assembly comprising a port passing through the wall of the housing to transmit fluid through the port when the port is open, a sealing device to seal the port, and a cutting device to disrupt the sealing device and permit transmission of fluid through the port. The cutting device is driven axially through the sealing device without relative rotation between the two. The cutting device has an asymmetric blade to cut a coupon from the sealing device by a gradual and progressive disruption of the closure, typically cutting through only a portion the closure device, so that the coupon cut from the closure device remains attached to the closure device when the closure device is ruptured to open the seal. Typically the downhole tool comprises a downhole pump, and the housing comprises the shroud of the pump.

  • Patent number: 7909095
Abstract: A valve device and associated methods of selectively communicating between an interior and an exterior of a tubular string. A valve device includes an openable and closable flowpath for selectively permitting and preventing flow between an interior and exterior of the valve device, and a lock assembly which prevents the flowpath from being opened greater than a predetermined number of times. A method of testing at least one annular seal in an annulus formed between a tubular string and a wellbore wall includes the steps of: sealingly engaging the annular seal to thereby prevent flow through the annulus across the annular seal; and applying a pressure differential across the annular seal to thereby test the annular seal, the pressure differential being applied via a valve device interconnected in the tubular string.

  • Patent number: 7798217
Abstract: An apparatus for separating a mixture of liquids of differing specific gravities in a wellbore is disclosed along with a method of installation and operation thereof. This device separates water from hydrocarbons prior to hydrocarbon extraction in order to decrease disposal costs of waste water. The device is designed to be compatible with existing oil wells that have been abandoned because of lack of profitability caused by a high water to oil ratio. The device may also be installed in new wells with a high water concentration.

  • Publication number: 20080115943
Abstract: A downhole tool used in the pressure isolation of adjacent subterranean formations. The downhole tool may comprise flow restriction devices along the outer circumference for impeding flow along the length of the tool. The tool may further comprise a perforating gun and an accumulator. Impeding flow along the length of the tool provides a dynamic flow restriction within the wellbore that precludes fluid flowing from one subterranean zone to an adjacent zone.

  • Patent number: 6298916
Abstract: A completion string for use in a wellbore includes a main conduit, such as a production tubing, and one or more alternate path conduits, such as shunt tubes, that extend generally in parallel with the main conduit. A flow control device is positioned in each alternate path conduit to control flow through the alternate path conduit. The one or more alternate path conduits may be adapted to carry gravel slurry to perform gravel packing operations. The one or more flow control devices in the one or more alternate path conduits may be actuated to the open position to allow communication of the gravel slurry to multiple zones in the wellbore. Once the gravel packing operation is completed, the one or more flow control devices may be actuated to the closed position to block fluid flow communication between multiple zones through the alternate path conduits during operation of the well. Other types of fluids may be communicated through the one or more alternate path conduits, such as fracturing fluids.

  • Patent number: 5404956
Abstract: A hydraulic setting tool for setting a packer with a sliding valve therein in an operating position in a well bore. The setting tool comprises an outer housing portion slidably disposed with respect to an inner mandrel portion. A piston is connected to the outer housing portion and slidable with respect to the inner portion. The piston is responsive to tubing pressure for setting the packer. A locking dog is provided for locking said piston against further movement after setting of the packer. An actuating mandrel forms a part of the inner mandrel portion and is adapted for engaging a valve in the packer. Longitudinal movement of the tool string allows selective opening and closing of the valve in the packer.

  • Patent number: 4903775
Abstract: A well surging system having pressure actuated ball valves and a mechanical actuating backup for the upper of said ball valves. The apparatus comprises a valve assembly portion containing the upper and lower ball valves which may be independently pressure actuated. The valve assembly portion also includes an extension portion having an extension mandrel therein connected to an upper ball valve actuator. The lower ball valve is opened by increasing the pressure in the well annulus around the valve assembly portion with respect to a flow bore therethrough. The upper ball valve is similarly pressure actuated. In the event that the upper ball valve pressure actuation is fully or partially unsuccessful, a probe assembly portion may be lowered on a wireline into the extension portion adjacent to the valve assembly portion. The probe assembly portion is adapted for releasable engagement with a lug extending inwardly from the extension mandrel.
