A piston associated with one of the sets of slips permits the mandrel to be incrementally indexed in response to a series of repeated applications of a predetermined differential pressure.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed which allow isolation of a plurality of zones for treatment, particularly sand fracturing. The lowermost barrier can be pumped through tubing and anchored in cased or open holes. In the preferred embodiment, the pumped plug has a visco-elastic member which contains a particulate aggregate mixture, such as described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,417,285. The visco-elastic material is subjected to a force which changes its shape so that the material obstructs the wellbore. The shape change also accomplishes dehydration of the material within the visco-elastic enclosure by virtue of fluid displacement, resulting from a volume reduction, hardening it so that a plug using the visco-elastic material is formed. Thereafter, a packer on the tubing string is set to isolate the zone for sand fracturing. The process can be repeated without tripping out of the hole as additional plugs are pumped through tubing and the process is repeated.

The invention provides a method of actuating a tool located in a wellbore, the method comprising the sequential steps of: (a) locating a frangible actuating ball (2) on a seat, the seat being provided in the tool for receiving the actuating ball (2); (b) pumping fluid down a tubing string attached to the tool so as to apply a force to the seat and thereby actuate the tool, the force being transmitted to the seat through the actuating ball (2); and (c) breaking the actuating ball (2) to permit fluid to flow through the seat. The invention has the advantage over the prior art of providing means for actuating a downhole tool with an actuating ball (2) so that the actuating ball (2) does not form an undesirable obstruction once the tool has been actuated.

    Abstract: A mine shaft closure plug which is created by a self-expanding plastic foam on a platform positioned within the mine shaft. Multiple expansion foam containers are used to provide the foam. Each expansion foam container has two closed waterproof pouches, an inner pouch and an outer pouch, each containing a separate component of the foam. The inner pouch is contained within the outer pouch. Upon breaking the inner pouch, the separate foam components combine within the outer pouch to form a complete expansion foam. The foam expands slowly enough to provide sufficient time for the container to be placed on the platform. Once in position, the expansion foam bursts the outer pouch to form the expansion foam plug above the platform. Either the platform or the expansion foam containers may be lowered into place by attached tethers.

    Abstract: A hollow body is provided with a seal by which it may be sealed within a nipple profile included in a tubing string. The body allows a wireline to be passed through it while maintaining a substantial seal. During running-in lower collet fingers engage a stop ring mounted on the body. When the plug becomes seated in the nipple profile by the weight of a logging tool also suspended on the wireline, fingers are disengaged by inward movement of external collet fingers and rollers. Consequent downward movement of the fingers allows the rope socket to push them outwardly and allows the logging tool to be lowered. An equalizing sleeve can be pulled up by the socket head from the sealing position to a raised position which allows pressure equalization above and below the plug to facilitate withdrawal thereof. Profiles on the fingers act to trap the socket head should the wireline pull out or break.

The plug may be encased within a plug sleeve which is, in turn, encased within a plug housing which may be disposed within the well bore. The sleeve is associated within the housing so that fluid may be displaced about the plug sleeve as the housing is disposed into the well bore.

Circular wall (22) thus has a tapering thickness along the length of the sleeve. The output/draw shaft (14) is inserted up through the sleeve and has a tapered external diameter corresponding to the internal taper of the sleeve.

    Abstract: There is disclosed an assembly of parts for use in cementing a casing string in a well bore comprising a float collar connectible as part of the string, a cement plug lowerable onto the collar, and a wiper plug lowerable onto the cement plug, the lower end of the cement plug having threads for limited make-up with threads on the upper end of the collar and the lower end of the wiper plug having threads for limited make-up with the cement plug, so as to limit rotation between them.

    Abstract: A tubular body containing a sleeve actuated safety valve is attachable to the top end of a hurricane plug. A running tool has a floating nut connection with the tubular body and a tubular extension on the running tool effects the opening of the safety valve while connected to the tubular body. After setting the hurricane plug, the running tool is disconnected from the tubular body by setdown weight, followed by rotation. A retrieving tool has an external threaded section which is threaded through an internal threaded section in the tubular body to engage the actuating sleeve for the safety valve, and effect the opening of the safety valve. Further rotation of the running tool engages the retrieving tool with the tubular body to effect the unsetting of the hurricane plug and permit the removal of the tubular body, hurricane plug and depending tool string from the well by the retrieving tool.

    Abstract: A logging plug for suspension on a wireline comprises a hollow body provided with packers for sealing it to a nipple included in a tubing string, and a flow tube through which the line may slide with minimal leakage. A sliding equalizing tube in the lower position shown blocks communication across the packers. When moved upwards by striking it with a hammer or logging tool, communication is allowed via ports in the equalizing tube and in the hollow body, the annular passage around the wireline and an axial bore in the lower part of the hollow body. Any pressure differential across the packers is thus equalized, allowing the logging plug to be easily withdrawn.

The tool includes a packer settable by right-hand rotation and vertical manipulation of the tool string and a bridge plug also settable by right-hand rotation and vertical manipulation of the tool string. A disabling tool is provided to disable the packer during setting of the bridge plug so that the packer is not prematurely set. After setting of the bridge plug below the formation, the packer and disabling tool may be disengaged from the bridge plug. At this point, the disabling tool is disengaged so that the packer may be set above the formation. The packer is unset by pulling on the tool string, and the packer and disabling tool may be reconnected to the bridge plug. Again lifting on the tool string unsets the bridge plug so that the apparatus may be retrieved or reused. A method of treating a well formation is also disclosed.
