  • Patent number: 7861789
Abstract: A method of completing a well having a casing hanger set in a subsea wellhead housing includes attaching a running tool to a tubular bridging hanger. A metal-to-metal inner seal is attached to a lower exterior portion of the bridging hanger and a metal-to-metal outer seal is located on an upper exterior portion of the bridging hanger. The assembly is lowered into the well and the lower exterior portion of the bridging hanger is inserted into the casing hanger. The inner seal is wedged between the casing hanger and the bridging hanger in response to weight of the running string. The running tool is actuated to set the outer seal between the upper exterior portion of the bridging hanger and the wellhead housing. Then, a tubing hanger is landed and sealed in the interior of the bridging hanger.

  • Patent number: 7779908
Abstract: The present invention relates to an arrangement for affixing an expandable packer 22, 32 in a hole 30, wherein the arrangement includes a piston-and-cylinder device 11, 12 with which the piston can be caused to move in the cylinder with the aid of a pressurized medium. Expansion of the packer is effected with the aid of the movement of the piston 11, by transferring the force generated by piston movement to an expandable part 24, 34 of the packer 22, 32 so that said part will expand. Expansion of the packer results in the packer being firmly affixed in the hole by means of friction. The arrangement also includes an elongate main body 1 that has a through-penetrating aperture extending in the longitudinal direction of the body. The main body 1 has a front end 3, which faces inwardly of the hole when fastening the packer and towards the packer.

Abstract: A packoff subassembly comprises the body having a first camming member secured at one end thereof and a second camming member supported thereon for relative sliding movement with respect thereto. The first and second camming members have outwardly angularly extending camming surfaces facing one another, and an elastomeric seal is mounted between the camming surfaces. A hub extends from the end of the body remote from the first camming member and threadedly receives a nut adapted to move the first and second camming surfaces toward one another thereby forcing the elastomeric seal outwardly and into sealing engagement with the surrounding surface.

  • Patent number: 6772844
Abstract: A sealing apparatus for sealing an annulus between a mandrel and an outer tubular. The apparatus comprises a top seal ring and a bottom seal ring separated by a double-ramped cylinder, all mounted on the mandrel and fit within the inner diameter of the outer tubular. The sealing apparatus is placed on the mandrel in running in position. The mandrel and sealing apparatus are then placed downhole in the outer tubular. Once at the desired location, a load is applied to the top seal ring. Once the load reaches a predetermined magnitude, the ramp slides under and expands the bottom seal ring to form a pressure-tight seal with the outer tubular. Additional load placed on the top seal ring causes the top seal ring to slide over the ramp and expand. As the top seal ring expands, the top seal ring forms a pressure-tight seal with the outer tubular.

  • Patent number: 6769491
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a method and apparatus for sealing an annulus in a wellbore. In one aspect, the apparatus is an anchoring and sealing system for a downhole tool such as a bridge plug, packer, or frac-plug. The sealing system comprises of a sealing member disposed between a set of energizing rings, a set of expansion rings adjacent each cone, a set of support rings, and a set of slips. The components of the sealing system are arranged such that, when compressed, the sealing member may expand radially into contact with a casing. In another aspect, the apparatus the invention provides for an apparatus that is a downhole sealing tool.

The retrievable packer (50) comprises a collet member (64) that is slidably disposed about a packer mandrel (52). The collet member (64) has a first operating position wherein the collet member (64) applies an axial force on a support ring (76) to positively position the support ring (76) at least partially between a first slip wedge (90) and the packer mandrel (52) to set a seal assembly (96, 98, 100). In addition, the collet member (64) has a second operating position wherein the collet member (64) applies an axial force on a slip assembly (80) to set the slip assembly (80).

  • Patent number: 6688400
Abstract: A method of providing a downhole seal, such as a packer, in a drilled bore between inner tubing and outer tubing comprises: providing an intermediate tubing section defining a seal arrangement for engaging with the inner tubing; and radially plastically deforming the intermediate tubing section downhole to form an annular extension. The extension creates a sealing contact with the outer tubing.

  • Patent number: 6675890
Abstract: A packing tool assembly for sealing oil well bores that basically includes an elongated tubular member, two deformable sealing units, two stopper ring members and a cylinder member. A setting tool transports the packing tool assembly and the former stays in the oil well bore during the preparation and sealing phases without requiring the typical time-consuming withdrawal. When the preparation phase has been completed, the packing tool assembly is disengaged from setting tool and the sealing phase starts immediately. The latch members of the setting tool are received within the internal locking channels of the cylinder member. The setting tool is then rotated to cause the cylinder member to advance towards stopper ring members, deforming outwardly the sealing units. The latter are expanded against the walls of oil well bore. Once expanded the sealing units, the setting tool is removed and a tool for the extraction phase is inserted.

Abstract: A packing element, which is a composite structure, is disclosed. Components contain the sealing portion to minimize extrusion. The element is retained in tension when running in to minimize damage. In the preferred embodiment, a collapsing sleeve transfers setting force applied at one end, to the opposite end to avoid the problem of bunching up the element adjacent to where it is being compressed which could, if not addressed, result in insufficiently low sealing contact pressure in regions remote from where the pushing force is applied.
