Publication number: 20040177954Abstract: A swaging tool is configured to drive the swage up a ramp until a series of dogs engages the inside wall of an outer tubular member. At that point the swage will be at the necessary position on the ramp to adequately expand the inner tubular for a proper supporting relation to the outer tubular. If the inside diameter of the outer tubular is at the high end of the tolerance allowed by API specifications, the diameter of the swage is increased to compensate. Similarly, if the inside diameter of the outer tubular is at the low end of the tolerance range of API specifications, then the dogs make contact with the inside wall sooner and the resulting diameter of the swage is necessarily smaller.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 12, 2003Publication date: September 16, 2004Inventors: Andy Tom, Sidney K. Publication number: 20040112590Abstract: An anchoring tool is provided for preventing rotation of a tubing string relative to a surrounding well casing in both right and left hand directions of rotation. The tool includes tubular housing for connection in line with the tubing string. A gripping member is supported alongside the housing for rotation about an anchor axis lying substantially parallel to the housing. The gripping member has a profile which increases in radial dimension from a first gripping portion to a second gripping portion thereof. The first gripping portion and the second gripping portion being arranged to grip the surrounding well casing in a retracted position and an extended position respectively. Rotation of the housing with the tubing string relative to the well casing rotates the gripping member in relation to the housing to vary an overall diameter of the anchoring tool within the well casing, thereby preventing further rotation.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 16, 2002Publication date: June 17, 2004Inventors: G. One embodiment of the invention is an expandable shifting tool comprising a housing having an outer diameter and a plurality of radially extendable elements. The radially extendable elements are longitudinally separated from each other and each extendable element is at least partially contained within the housing. The extendable elements are capable of moving between an extended position and a retracted position and are biased towards the extended position.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 9, 2001Publication date: November 14, 2002Inventors: Dinesh R. Patent number: 6467540Abstract: A wellbore packer and slip combination for production tubing and the like comprises a plurality of slip elements that are caged together around the periphery of a cylindrical mandrel. An axially displaced actuator simultaneously engages all of the elements to ramp one end of all elements against a casing wall. After the one end of the slip and packer unit is set, further displacement of the actuator expands the other end of the elements against the casing wall. The packer and slip assembly may be retracted and recovered by a simultaneous lift and rotation of the tool string.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2000Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Conrad Gustav Weinig, John Lindley Baugh

Patent number: 6464003Abstract: A gripper assembly for anchoring a tractor within a downhole passage and for assisting movement of the tractor within the passage. The gripper assembly includes an elongated mandrel and flexible toes that can be radially displaced to grip onto the surface of the passage. The toes are displaced by the interaction of a driver slidable on the mandrel and a driver interaction element on the toes. In one embodiment, the toes are displaced by the interaction of rollers and ramps that are longitudinally movable with respect to one another. In another embodiment, the toes are displaced by the interaction of toggles that rotate with respect to the toes.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2001Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Duane Bloom, Norman Bruce Moore, Rudolph Ernst Krueger, V

Patent number: 6457533Abstract: There is provided a downhole tubing sealing system (10) comprising a radially expandable slotted tubular body (16) carrying deformable material (22) on the exterior thereof; and a seal member (26) for location within the tubular body and for engaging an inner surface of said body. There is further provided a method of sealing a portion of a downhole bore, the method comprising locating a radially expandable slotted tubular body (16) carrying deformable material (22) on the exterior thereof in a bore, expanding the body radially into contact with the bore wall, and locating a seal member (26) within the body and radially extending the seal member to engage an inner surface of the body, so sealing portion of the downhole bore.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2000Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventor: Paul David Metcalfe

Patent number: 6450261Abstract: A swedge assembly is disclosed which has the capability of allowing for a sealing connection between an inner tubular and an outer tubular where the outer tubular has significant out of roundness. A resilient segment or segments is disposed on the swedge in contact with the inner tubular to be expanded so as to fill any voids created by out of roundness of the outer tubular. The resilient material may be an elastomer or any pliable metallic or any other material compatible with the applicable well bore conditions.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2000Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: John L. Patent number: 6447021Abstract: A locking telescoping joint is for use in a conduit connected to a wellhead, which permits the conduit to be axially displaced to a new position in the well bore without disconnecting the conduit from the wellhead, and secured in the new position. The locking telescoping joint includes two telescopically interconnected tubular sections which are relatively movable between a fully retracted and a fully extended position and can be locked in a desired position. In contrast with telescoping joints without the locking function which is useful to axially display downhole tools attached to the bottom end of the conduit. The locking telescoping joint enables the use of the telescoping joint to be extended into new applications, such as placing and maintaining a tubing string in tension or compression. The use of the locking telescoping joint reduces the time and cost of many well completion and maintenance operations and thereby reduces the cost of producing hydrocarbons.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1999Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Inventor: Michael Jonathon Haynes

Publication number: 20020121380Abstract: A selectively released well tool anchor has a tubular wicker shoe cage and a tubular setting sleeve in sliding assembly over a tubular mandrel. The wicker shoe cage confines a plurality of independent wicker shoes. The tubular setting sleeve has a conical slip face that is loosely meshed with the shoe cage by a plurality of collet fingers extended from the conical slip face into meshed engagement with detents in the shoe cage. The collet fingers are secured within the detents for well run-in by calibrated shear fasteners. Slip faces on the several wicker shoes are aligned with the conical slip face to effect a radial displacement of the wicker shoes by an axial translation of the setting sleeve relative to the shoe cage. However, no relative axial translation may occur until sufficient axial compressive force between the shoe cage and setting sleeve is imposed to shear the calibrated fasteners.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 1, 2001Publication date: September 5, 2002Inventors: James Christopher Doane, Hector Hugo Mireles, Conrad Gustave Weinig
