Abstract: A downhole tool 100 includes closure seats 116, 176 for seating with a closure, such as a ball. Shear pins or other connectors temporarily limit axial movement of each closure seat which is initially housed within a restricted diameter portion of the central throughbore in the tool body. A piston axially moves in response to fluid pressure to pressurize fluid in a chamber and controllably release fluid through one or more restrictions. The closure seat may be lowered to engage a stop 108, 159, such that the seat may move axially to an enlarged diameter bore portion of the tool, thereby allowing radial expansion of a closure seat to release the ball.

  • Patent number: 7845400
Abstract: A wiper plug release tool uses a first pump down plug that lands in the tool to pressurize an internal chamber to slide a sleeve that undermines a set of dogs to allow the lower wiper plug to be decoupled from support. The shifting of this sleeve cams a second set of dogs into an internal passage in the tool to act as a landing location for a second pump down plug. Landing the second pump down plug on the now extended dogs allows a net pressure to be applied to an upper piston which shifts a sleeve to release the support for the second wiper plug. The upper piston remains in pressure balance unless the second pump down plug can be landed on the dogs that only extended because the sleeve that released the lower wiper plug had shifted.

  • Patent number: 7350582
Abstract: The present invention generally provides a pressure isolation plug for managing a wellbore with multiple zones. The pressure isolation plug generally includes a body with a bore extending therethrough, a first disintegratable ball sized and positioned to restrict upward fluid flow through the bore, wherein the disintegratable ball disintegrates when exposed to wellbore conditions for a first amount of time. The plug also includes a second ball sized and positioned to restrict downward fluid flow through the bore.

  • Patent number: 7347289
Abstract: A by-pass tool is provided which has a large bore throughflow passage when in an inactive drilling mode, and which is capable of being activated upon launching of an activation dart from the surface, to an active mode in which drillstring fluids can be diverted to a by-pass port. The by-pass tool includes a casing, a by-pass port for diverting drillstring fluids when the tool is in the active mode, and an axially slidable member placed within the casing to slide between blocking and release positions with respect to the by-pass port. The slidable member may be moved to the release position by the dart to bring ports in the slidable member into registry with the by-pass port. This slidable member may also return to its blocking position and thereby cause the tool to revert to its inactive mode upon wireline retrieval of the dart.

  • Patent number: 7243728
Abstract: Devices and methods for releasably securing components of a device having a sliding sleeve arrangement to prevent premature actuation due to vibration. In a currently preferred embodiment, standard elastomeric O-rings are used as shear members. The O-ring shear members reside within spaces formed between two slidable sleeve members. The O-rings are sheared cross-sectionally to allow the sleeve members to move axially with respect to one another. An exemplary coiled tubing shear release joint is described that incorporates a shear disconnect assembly which uses elastomeric O-rings as shear members. Multiple O-ring seals can be used as shear members to increase the shear value of the device. The use of O-rings as shear members helps prevent premature sliding of sleeve components in response to high vibration. Because the O-rings are resilient, they absorb vibration and do not shear during vibration, the connection between the two sleeve components will not be released prematurely.

  • Patent number: 7150326
Abstract: The present invention provides a bi-directional ball seat and method of use. In at least one embodiment, the present invention provides a fluid control system that includes a radial protrusion that can be selectively engaged and disengaged upstream and/or from a ball seat. For example, a ball can be placed in a passageway, engaged with a downstream ball seat, and the radial protrusion radially extended into the passageway distally from the seat relative to the ball. A reverse movement of the ball is restricted by the active radial movement of the radial protrusion into the passageway. The control system can be used to control a variety of tools associated with the well. Without limitation, the tools can include crossover tools, sleeves, packers, safety valves, separators, gravel packers, perforating guns, decoupling tools, valves, and other tools know to those with ordinary skills in the art.

Abstract: A tubing string assembly is disclosed for fluid treatment of a wellbore. The tubing string can be used for staged wellbore fluid treatment where a selected segment of the wellbore is treated, while other segments are sealed off. The tubing string can also be used where a ported tubing string is required to be run in in a pressure tight condition and later is needed to be in an open-port condition.

  • Patent number: 7100700
Abstract: A ball release mechanism is mounted near the intended seat. The ball or balls are kept out of the circulating stream. High circulation rates followed by curtailment of circulation places an outlet port in position to allow the ball or balls to be pushed out by a spring. The spring or one of the balls prevents the return of an ejected ball back into the protected pocket. The ball is delivered to the seat without circulation.

  • Patent number: 7055605
Abstract: A downhole tool (10) for selectively circulating fluid in a borehole is disclosed. The tool operates via the use of a combination of deformable drop balls (36) and smaller hard drop balls (40). In use a deformable drop ball (36) moves a sleeve (20) exposing a radial port (30,32) to provide fluid circulation radially from the tool. The smaller drop ball (40) can then obstruct the radial port (32,30) and by the increased pressure the deformable drop ball (36) is extruded through the tool. The resulting pressure differential as the drop ball (36) moves causes the sleeve (20) to rise, releasing the smaller drop (40) ball and closing the radial port (32,30). The process can be repeated to selectively circulate fluid through the tool.

  • Patent number: 6959766
Abstract: A ball drop tool for dropping an actuating ball to a ball seat located in a tool or tool string therebelow. The ball drop tool includes a housing with a ball drop cage positioned therein. The ball drop cage has a rocker arm pivotably attached thereto. In a first position, the rocker arm retains the actuating ball in the housing and in the second position releases the actuating ball so that it is displaced downwardly to engage the ball seat therebelow in the tool string. The ball drop cage may be connected to a releasing seat sleeve thereabove. Downward movement of the releasing seat sleeve from a first position to a second position after landing a releasing ball on the releasing sleeve moves the ball drop cage from the first position to the second position to release the actuating ball.

  • Patent number: 6923255
Abstract: A by-pass tool to be incorporated in a drill string, in combination with an activating ball assembly operative to adjust the tool between an activated mode and a de-activated mode. The tool has a valve seat engageable by the activating ball assembly to move its sleeve to a by-pass mode which diverts drilling mud from flowing through the housing to a by-pass flow through the by-pass port. The activating ball assembly has a deformable ball of a size sufficient to engage and to be held captive by the salve seat and a weight attached to the ball and operative to assist in movement of the assembly under the action of gravity to engage the ball with the valve seat. The weight has smaller transverse dimensions that the ball so that it moves downwardly through the valve seat and pulls the ball into engagement with the valve seat.
