  • Patent number: 6615921
Abstract: A drill bit guide is mounted in a wellhead in place of a wear bushing. The bit guide is capable of guiding strings and tools through the wellhead without damage to the wellhead or string while drilling. In one version of the bit guide, a pair of linear actuators radially extend and retract separate halves of the bit guide to conform to the size of the object located between them. In another version of the bit guide, a set of interlocking arms and wear bars are articulated to form a circular opening having a variable inner diameter. A drill string may be lowered through a fully open bit guide or landed on top of a fully closed bit guide. The bit guide also can be moved to more closely receive the drill string passing through it to prevent damage to the drill string and the wellhead.

Abstract: A subsea production system and method includes a wellhead field having multiple wellheads and utilizes a stackable guide funnel system for sequential tying back of those wellheads. A storage frame retains several guide funnels that are nestably stacked one upon the other. The guide funnels may be sequentially removed from the frame by a riser connector having a complimentary latching mechanism. The frame is made up of a plurality of guide members that are secured to the exposed tubular conductor of a wellhead. A pair of annular rings surrounds portions of each of the guide members. The upper end of the frame is outwardly flared to assist in landing of the riser connector. The stacked guide funnels are prepositioned at one or more central locations upon the sea floor. The guide funnels are configured at the central location to permit sequential retreival. A riser having a riser connector is lowered to the central location. The riser connector latches onto the uppermost guide funnel within the frame.

  • Patent number: 6336508
Abstract: The invention is a device for eliminating the “tripping” of the BOP stack to the surface when switching between drilling and completion modes of operation on a drilling rig. This device is a new apparatus for attaching a BOP guide funnel, which will allow the funnel to be released and/or reattached while the BOP remains subsea on or near the seafloor. The new BOP guide funnel assembly consists of three basic components: a guide funnel, a connector shroud and a parking pile adapter. The guide funnel has a downwardly opening funnel on bottom (used to capture a wellhead) and an upwardly opening smaller funnel on top (used to guide the shroud back into the guide funnel during re-installation of the guide funnel). The connector shroud is permanently attached to the bottom of the BOP stack, surrounding the BOP wellhead connector and holds the guide funnel in place.

Abstract: Two or more opposing and outward facing profiles are fabricated and joined to each other along their outer edges, forming a section of a guide string. The sections of the guide string are secured together in an assembly and lowered into a single conductor. The assembly lands on the bottom of the well and may support its own weight. The guide string defines two separate longitudinal cavities or sections of the well. Each separate cavity allows drilling and installation of casing in the conductor.

Abstract: A downhole casing guide member comprising a structure having a unitary formation wherein in a plane perpendicular to a center longitudinal axis of the structure, the unitary formation is generally "Y" shaped in two opposite directions about the center longitudinal axis. The downhole casing guide member further comprises at least one clamping bracket member securable to the structure. The unitary formation of the structure serves to maximize available flow area for flow of fluid, liquid slurry and/or cement around the contour of the unitary formation and maximize the diameters of casing strings which may be run within a conductor casing; and tapered upper and lower shoulders on the casing guide member ease passage of the guide member into and out of a conductor casing. Further, the overall configuration and shape of the downhole guide member eases passage of casing strings lowered into or removed from the conduits formed by the guide member.

  • Patent number: 5918675
Abstract: A guidance system comprising two guide tubes is lowered into a well with a conductor. The guide tubes are connected together by partitions which are about 100 feet apart and divide the conductor into two halves. Each partition comprises two symmetrically formed, semi-cylindrical sections facing in opposite directions. A threaded collar is secured to the upper end of each of the guide tubes. The collars are then landed on a lower plate at the upper end of the conductor. An upper plate is secured to the upper end of the conductor on top of the lower plate. The operator lowers a string of drill pipe through holes in the plates into the conductor to drill a first smaller diameter well at the bottom of the conductor. After drilling to the desired depth, the operator runs a first string of casing down the conductor and through the new well bore. The casing is located on one side of each partition and cemented in place.

  • Patent number: 5722796
Abstract: A subsea system comprises a central template that is piled into the seabed and carried wing modules that are connected to the template by hinges. This allows the template to be deployed and the wing modules attached subsequently or for the wing modules to be folded upwardly into a collapsed disposition as the template is deployed. In either case, the template can be deployed through the moonpool of a vessel and does not require a heavy lifting barge. An example of a module usable with the template is a hinge-over guidebase which can allow the commencement of drilling of a well while a manifold and christmas tree are being constructed for subsequent attachment. Thus, installation of the system is easy and drilling of the well can commence quickly.
