  • Publication number: 20100186968
Abstract: A kit for converting an existing wireline retrievable surface controlled subsurface safety valve (170, 270, 370) into a bypass passageway apparatus (100) allowing the injection of production-enhancing fluid into a wellbore while maintaining the operation of the closure member (374). Bypass passageway (280) can extend between upper (260) and lower (275) adapters external to the existing wireline retrievable surface controlled subsurface safety valve (270) to allow fluid injection bypass thereof. Conversion kit can include a tubing string hanger to suspend a velocity tubing string (407, 507), a gas lift valve (475) for gas lift operations, a locking mandrel (220), and/or a spacer tube (240).

  • Patent number: 7762335
Abstract: A system is provided for switching between redundant control systems for a subsurface safety valve (SSV) while being able to isolate the closure spring from hydrostatic pressure in the control line of the system that is not being used. There are two control lines that connect to discrete operating pistons that are both coupled to the flow tube. Each operating piston is connected to a control rod with the control rods terminating near opposed ends of a pivoting member. Pushing down on one rod pushes up on the other rod so that the other rod is held supported and the hydrostatic pressure in its associated control line doesn't affect the force needed by the closure spring to close the SSV. Releasing control line pressure puts the system in neutral to allow either of the systems to be reselected.

Abstract: A completion system that is usable with a well may include a packer, a screen, an isolation valve and an annulus communication valve. The screen communicates well fluid between an annulus of the well and an interior passageway of the completion system. The isolation valve is radially disposed inside the screen to control communication through the screen between the annulus and the interior passageway. The annulus communication valve is located downhole of the packer and uphole of the screen to control communication with the annulus of the well. The packer, screen, isolation valve and the annulus communication valve are adapted to be run downhole as a unit into the well as a single trip completion.

  • Patent number: 7743833
Abstract: A control system for a subsurface safety valve references the surrounding annulus to put the operating piston in pressure balance. Depending on the configuration and which seal in the system fails, the various embodiments can differ in their failure modes. With the lower end of the piston exposed to annulus pressure all failure modes close the flapper. With the lower end of the piston exposed to tubing pressure, failure of any of the seals except one will result in flapper closure.

Abstract: Access to a downhole tool through a tubular wall is created with a penetration tool into a surrounding annular chamber. The chamber is disposed around a tool joint between the end connection leaving an annular chamber that is of considerable length and allowing penetration anywhere along such length. The need to precisely position the penetration tool, as in past designs of annular chambers disposed within a pin and box connection is eliminated. Landing shoulders for the penetrating tool are also not required as the long length of the annular chamber allows surface personnel to sufficiently and accurately place the penetration tool somewhere along the length of the annular chamber.

  • Patent number: 7658229
Abstract: The present invention is directed to producing fluid from an oil or gas well by means of a combination intermittently filled down hole chamber accumulation device and a connected upper continuous gas lift flow system, separated by an inline one-way reverse flow check valve. A two-way purge and vent valve controls the distribution of high pressure gas. The two-way valve first injects high pressure gas into the chamber accumulation device to displace the fluid from the chamber into the continuous flow conduit. The two-way valve then vents the residual high pressure gas from the chamber into a separate low pressure conduit to the surface. The valve also provides high pressure gas to the continuous flow conduit to assist in the production of the fluid.

  • Patent number: 7637324
Abstract: A valve for a line going to a subsurface safety valve can be blocked off with a valve that is initially held in a closed position. An upper spring pushes collets against a shoulder to keep a seal on a support assembly for the collets within an initial bore in a sealing relation. Application of pressure to the line urges the support assembly to move with respect to the collets and causes the collets to become unsupported. This initial movement of the support assembly is against a second spring that is weaker than the upper spring. The upper spring forces the collapsed collets into a smaller bore while the support assembly is retained against reverse movement at the urging of the second spring by a ratchet assembly. The seal is shifted into a bigger bore to allow flow through the valve and into or beyond the subsurface safety valve.

The valve is configured to be connected to a controller at the surface by a control line so that the control piston is actuatable between a first position and a second position in response to receiving pressurized fluid from the controller through the control line. The balance piston is configured to compensate for hydrostatic pressure in the control line. The valve may have a bore therethrough and the control piston may be configured to utilize tubing pressure within the valve bore to urge the control piston towards the second position.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for direct connecting downhole control hydraulics through an oil field hanger, where the hanger is coupled to a wellhead, to hydraulic lines extending outside the wellhead. Further, the direct connection allows hydraulic system integrity with reduced contamination and leakage. Hydraulic tool ports, formed on the hanger, are coupled with hydraulic lines extending downward to a hydraulic tool. Side ports, formed in the hanger, are fluidicly coupled to the hydraulic tool ports. Hydraulic lines extending outside the wellhead are directly coupled with the side ports by accessing the side ports through access openings in the wellhead when the ports are aligned with the access openings. The system can still maintain pressure within internal spaces of the wellhead after the connection by sealing the access openings with flanges, where the hydraulic lines extend through openings in the flanges that are also sealed around the lines.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for sealing a safety valve within a tubular that the safety valve is designed to be landed and set in are disclosed. The valve includes a seal assembly having a seal on the valve that is acted on by a first piston disposed on a first side of the seal and/or a second piston disposed on a second side of the seal. Wellbore fluid pressure acts on the first piston when the valve is closed, thereby moving the first piston to force the seal into sealing contact with an inside surface of the tubular. When the safety valve is actuated open, fluid pressure from a control line acts on the second piston and moves the second piston to force the seal into sealing contact with the inside surface of the tubular. The seal may include a plurality of chevron seals on each side of a sealing element.
