Disassembling Well Part Patents (Class 166/377)
  • Patent number: 8985224
Abstract: An internal bidirectional tubing plug for plugging a well to prevent well fluids from passing the plug in a well conduit until the internal components of the plug are pumped out of its body. The body of the plug connects to the well's tubing string. The body holds a petal assembly consisting of several petals and a tapered cork assembly located within an opening formed by the petals. Both assemblies are sandwiched between upper and lower pistons. Hydrostatic pressure on the bottom of the plug as it is lowered into the fluid filled well holds the petals within the body. The internal components of the plug are removed from the body by applying hydraulic pressure in the upper area of the plug. This causes the plug to fail at a recess provided in the cork, resulting in the two assemblies and the pistons being forced out of the body.

Abstract: A method is presented for connecting and disconnecting sections of a work string for use in a subterranean wellbore. A preferred method of disconnecting includes the steps of positioning a stinger and a downhole tool assembly of a work string adjacent upper and lower sealing rams, such as in a BOP and lubricator assembly. The sealing rams are closed, defining a first and second pressure zone adjacent the tool. A differential pressure is applied across the pressure zones, moving a piston element in the tool assembly. Axial movement of the piston element causes relative rotational movement of cooperating locking elements. In one embodiment, the locking elements are rotated to an unlocked position and then move relative to one another axially in response to a biasing spring. The relative axial movement of the locking elements results in unlatching of a latching assembly, thereby disconnecting the tool and stinger.

A well packer can include a generally tubular mandrel, at least one slip configured for gripping a well surface, the slip being extendable outward by engagement with a support surface, and a gripping device which permits displacement of the mandrel relative to the support surface in one direction, and which prevents displacement of the mandrel relative to the support surface in an opposite direction. A method of manufacturing a gripping device can include deforming a sleeve, thereby changing a diameter of the sleeve, aligning teeth on the sleeve across at least one slot in the sleeve, and heat treating the sleeve while the sleeve remains deformed and the teeth remain aligned.

Abstract: A wellhead latch assembly may include one or more latches for attaching to a wellhead and allowing removal of the wellhead during a well abandonment process. The wellhead latch assembly may include an inner core coupled to the latches, and an outer sleeve for selectively latching and unlatching the latches to the wellhead. The inner core may abut the wellhead and can include a groove having circumferential and/or longitudinal features. The outer sleeve may include a pin which travels within the groove and a set of cut-outs for alignment with the latches. When the cut-outs align with the latches, the latches may expand radially outward and disengage the wellhead. As the outer sleeve moves axially or rotationally relative to the inner core, the latches may fall out of alignment with the cut-outs and move radially inwardly to engage or capture the wellhead.

Abstract: A system and method facilitate drilling of a lateral wellbore by eliminating one or more trips downhole. The system comprises a drill bit optimized for the drilling operation. The drill bit is coupled to a whipstock via a connector, which minimizes interference with the cutting elements of the drill bit. The connector includes a separation device which facilitates disconnection of the drill bit from the whipstock after the whipstock is anchored at a desired downhole location. The separation device is disposed in the connector to minimize the remaining portions of the connector existing after separation of the drill bit from the whipstock which must be milled by the drill bit prior to drilling the lateral wellbore.

Abstract: A safety joint for use in a subterranean well can include separable portions which, when separated, disconnect sections of a tubular string. Elongation of the safety joint can be permitted while longitudinal compression of the safety joint is prevented. A method of activating a safety joint in a subterranean well can include providing the safety joint with portions having end connectors which interconnect the safety joint between sections of a tubular string, permitting elongation of the safety joint, thereby facilitating disconnection of the tubular string sections, and then preventing longitudinal compression of the safety joint. Another safety joint can include separable portions, and a locking device which permits relative displacement between a generally tubular mandrel and a component of the safety joint in one direction, and prevents relative displacement between the mandrel and the component in an opposite direction.

Abstract: A hydraulic disconnect apparatus is disclosed for disconnecting a pipe string or coiled tubing string from a bottom hole assembly for drilling, work over, or plug and abandonment of oil and gas wells. Disconnection is accomplished by pumping a circulation ball from surface through the pipe or coiled tubing string until it lands on a seat inside the apparatus. Fluid pressure is then applied to shift a piston assembly within the apparatus, thereby allowing a series of balls to retract. The upper and lower portions of the apparatus can then be separated by applying a tensile force to the upper portion.
