Upper And Lower Slips Patents (Class 166/77.53)
  • Publication number: 20090056933
Abstract: A power slip that utilizes modified SDXL slips and regular drilling bowls that fits to the pin drive master bushings of the rotary table and utilizes the depth of the drive pin holes as part of the actuators, thus allowing the power slip to set lower for added clearance and safety during drilling operations. Cables are anchored to a base plate and slip linkages and slip connectors are pivotally mounted to the slips and to the top plate so that, when the lift cylinders are actuated, the slips are moved to the released position. This two-stage linkage and cable design maximizes the movement of the slip assemblies while minimizing vertical movement of the power slip's housing.

  • Patent number: 7293618
Abstract: This invention relates to a mechanical apparatus for gripping and manipulating tubular members, such as drill pipe. The apparatus is essentially an automated slip puller, which generally comprises a slip base, a pulling mechanism pivotally attached to the slip base, and at least one cylinder or spring attached to the pulling mechanism. The entire apparatus is releasably connected to a rotary table located over a borehole. In a typical well drilling operation, the automated slip puller is attached to a slip assembly, which is thereafter placed around a drill pipe and positioned in the rotary table bushing. When the automated slip puller is activated, the pulling mechanism removes the slip assembly from the rotary table bushing and from around the drill pipe, thereby allowing the drill pipe to be manipulated in or out of the well bore. During operation, no portion of the automated slip puller is located outside the boundary of the rotary table.

Abstract: A drill gripping device is shown with an inexpensive and compact design. In one embodiment, an inexpensive and more compact design is possible through the use of a single actuator with a single gripping portion of a drill gripping device. Embodiments of drill gripping devices shown are further reduced in price and size due to a force amplification device such as a camming arm. Alternatively, an increased gripping force is possible using an existing size actuator. A drill gripping device is shown with increased precision in gripping. A pair of gripping jaws are synchronized to improve jaw centering capabilities.

  • Patent number: 6435280
Abstract: For making of breaking a coupling between a pipe section (1) and a pipe string (2) projecting from a rotary drilling rig into a bore in the lithosphere, the pipe section (1) is rotated relative to the pipe string (2) by applying a torque up to a make-up or breaking torque. Exertion of said torque generates a reactive torque in an opposite sense of rotation. Rotation induced by a motor (17; 50) is transferred to the pipe string (2) so that said pipe string (2) is rotated as well. The reactive torque is transferred to the pipe string (2) along a path bypassing the motor (17; 50). Thus, the make-up or breaking torque can be exerted without requiring a substantial change of the torque exerted to rotate the pipe string (2) at a constant rotational velocity in order to avoid changes of the rotational velocity of the pipe string (2). A pipe coupling device and a pipe handler for carrying out this method are described as well.

  • Patent number: 6349764
Abstract: A drill pipe for oil and gas drilling rigs, the drill pipe having an enlarged diameter section positioned between the ends of the drill pipe. The enlarged diameter section of drill pipe has a shoulder which corresponds with and is engaged by a shoulder located on wedge members of a holder in a drilling rig for supporting the drill pipe without crushing or otherwise damaging the drill pipe.

  • Patent number: 6276450
Abstract: Apparatus and method for rapid replacement of upper inside blowout preventers (IBOP) on a top drive system (TDS) utilizes a hydraulic pressure booster to increase the operating pressure of a pipe handler/torque wrench, an air amplifier to increase the air pressure to a main shaft brake of the TDS in order to provide torque back-up, a rotary table back-up structure (RTBS) for providing a torque back-up for removing the upper IBOP, and a drive ring for preventing relative rotation between the RTBS and upper IBOP. The saver sub and lower IBOP are first broken out, or loosened, with the pipe handler/torque wrench. The upper IBOP is then broken out by placing the RTBS over the rotary table with the rotary table and the TDS main shaft locked. The modified TDS and pipe handler/torque wrench are then used together with the RTBS and drive ring in order to rapidly and safely replace the upper IBOP.

  • Patent number: 6213216
Abstract: A power tong set, with lead and back-up tongs, is mounted on the slip bowl of the traveling Jack head of a snubbing unit and rotates with the slip bowl. Service lines (or umbelicals) for the tong set are not connected during string rotation. In an alternate version of the apparatus a fluid feed through swivel is mounted on the tong set, secured to the necessary tong operating and control service fluid line, or lines, such that the tong set can rotate with tong service lines between the tong set and the snubbing unit attached during rotation. In an alternate form, the tong set is mounted on the jack head, independently of the rotary table, and the tong set does not rotate when the rotary table rotates.
