  • Patent number: 7721808
Abstract: A hybrid wellhead system is assembled using a plurality of threaded unions, such as spanner nuts or hammer unions, for securing respective tubular heads and a flanged connection for securing a flow control stack to a top of a tubing head spool. The tubing head spool is secured by a threaded union to an intermediate head spool. The intermediate head spool is secured by another threaded union to a wellhead. Each tubular head secures and suspends a tubular string in the well bore. The hybrid wellhead system is capable of withstanding higher fluid pressures than a conventional independent screwed wellhead, while providing a more economical alternative to a flanged, or ranged, wellhead system because it is less expensive to construct and faster to assemble.

  • Patent number: 7510002
Abstract: An improved valve for sealing a wellbore and method of use, in particular for prevention of well blow outs. In one embodiment, the apparatus is designed to seal a well through rotation of rams. The rams may be actuated to seal the well without having to work against full well pressure as fluid volumes in the apparatus housing, which also contains the rams, are preserved. This functionality allows the apparatus to be constructed with smaller dimensions than existing prior art blow out prevention valves aiding handling and manoeuvrability. The improved valve according to one embodiment also has a mechanism that guides a wireline or a pipeline being run in the wellbore to the centre of the bore and allows a seal to be formed around the wireline or pipeline.

Abstract: An improved shear/seal ram assembly used in ram-type BOPs is disclosed. The disclosed invention is a unique shear/seal ram assembly in which rail seal actuators attached to or integrally formed in a planar surface of one shear blade mate with and slide within corresponding rail guide grooves formed in a planar surface of a second shear blade. As the shear blades move over each other, the rail seal actuators slide within the rail guide grooves, eventually coming into contact with a seal actuator plate of a unique blade-to-blade seal assembly placed within a shear blade seal groove. Continued movement of the shear blades over each other causes the rail seal actuators to compress, or “energize,” the blade-to-blade seal of the blade-to-blade seal assembly, thereby providing a pressure tight seal between the shear blade assemblies.

  • Patent number: 7207382
Abstract: The present invention provides a method, apparatus, and system to shear a tubular member disposed in a well and seal the wellbore using a unique blade seal. In at least one embodiment, the blade seal is adapted to interface with opposing rams in a blowout preventer. The blade seal uses a combination of arcuate surfaces with a common centerpoint to interface with corresponding surfaces in a ram block of a ram. The blade seal retains sealing capabilities used for wells and at the same time reduces the forces on the ram body to reduce failures from overpressurization. Further, the blade seal can be used in existing blowout preventers bodies that heretofore have been overstressed by prior art designs.

  • Patent number: 7159669
Abstract: A holding member provides for releasably positioning a rotating control head assembly in a subsea housing. The holding member engages an internal formation in the subsea housing to resist movement of the rotating control head assembly relative to the subsea housing. The rotating control head assembly is sealed with the subsea housing when the holding member engages the internal formation. An extendible portion of the holding member assembly extrudes an elastomer between an upper portion and a lower portion of the internal housing to seal the rotating control head assembly with the subsea housing. Pressure relief mechanisms release excess pressure in the subsea housing and a pressure compensation mechanism pressurize bearings in the bearing assembly at a predetermined pressure.

  • Patent number: 7150327
Abstract: According to one embodiment of the invention, a method for wellbore production enhancement includes determining a location of a tubing connector of a tubing string having a plurality of tube sections, translating one or more slips downward to hold a position of the tubing string, disconnecting one of the tube sections above the tubing connector, thereby causing the discharge of a liquid out of the tubing string, directing the discharged liquid to a fluid containment, re-attaching the disconnected tube section to the tubing string, translating the tubing string upwardly, and disconnecting the tube section again.

  • Patent number: 7086474
Abstract: A blowout preventer handling apparatus including a frame structure, a carriage slidably supported on the frame structure, a raising frame pivotally supported on the carriage, and a positioner mechanism cooperatively connected to the raising frame for receiving the blowout preventer therein and for moving the blowout preventer upwardly-and-downwardly, rotationally, and side-to-side. A tray is slidably supported on the carriage so as to be movable between a first position away from the positioning mechanism to a position directly below the positioning mechanism. An outrigger assembly is selectively movable outwardly of an end of the frame structure.

  • Patent number: 7040410
Abstract: Adapters for connecting to a double-locking casing mandrel of an independent screwed wellhead include a lockdown flange with an adapter pin, and a retainer flange that may be used with or without the adapter pin. The retainer flange has a top surface with circumferentially-spaced threaded bores that permit well stimulation equipment to be mounted thereto. The retainer flange threadedly connects to a pin thread at a top of the casing mandrel, and therefore provides a low profile mounting flange for well stimulation equipment.

  • Patent number: 7040393
Abstract: The invention is directed to pressure lines for use with equipment associated with drilling and production risers, and in particular, pressure lines having breechblock connections with the equipment and with choke and kill lines for use in connection with different sized blowout preventer stacks (“BOP stacks”). The pressure line systems and choke and kill line systems of the invention include a breechblock connection for quick and easy removal and installation of the pressure lines to riser equipment and the choke and kill lines to BOP stacks. Additionally, the choke and kill lines of the invention may include a coupling system having a BOP connector, or plate assembly, for permitting one set of choke and kill lines to be used on various sized BOP stacks. Abstract: Methods and apparatus for handling blowout preventer stacks. In one embodiment the handling system includes a cart, or skid, providing a base platform, a tilting frame, and a lifting frame. The stack is attached to the lifting frame, which is slidingly supported by the tilting frame, which pivots relative to the cart. The cart provides for positional adjustment of the stack in a first horizontal direction, while positional adjustment in a second, perpendicular horizontal direction is provided by a lateral adjustment mechanism coupling the tilting frame and the cart. The lifting frame can be moved vertically relative to the cart and also provides for rotational adjustment of the stack about its central axis.

  • Patent number: 7032677
Abstract: A lockdown flange for use with an independent screwed wellhead includes an annular body having a center passageway with an internal diameter at least as large as a passageway through the wellhead. The lock down flange may be used to construct a multi-lock adapter for connecting a high pressure valve, a blowout preventer or a well stimulation tool to the independent screwed wellhead. The lockdown flange ensures that stress on connection points to the screwed independent wellhead due to elevated fluid pressures used for well stimulation procedures does not exceed engineered specifications.
