Patent number: 7861811Abstract: An implement drive arrangement for a wheel axle assembly pivotally connected to a housing. A drive element is supported on the axle for rotation with the wheel generally about the wheel axis. The housing rotatably supports a driven element for rotation about an axis generally fixed in relation to the housing. A free-floating connecting element is rotatably supported between the drive element and the driven element to facilitate relatively unimpeded pivoting of the axle and wheel relative to the housing. The connecting element has two degrees of freedom offset at 90° to one another and aligned radially relative to the axis of rotation to accommodate axle pivoting while assuring smooth transfer of power from the wheel to the driven element as the angular relationship changes between the axle and housing with movement of the wheel over irregular ground surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2008Date of Patent: January 4, 2011Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Rogerio Kroth, Ademar Gelbhar

Patent number: 5347939Abstract: Improved agricultural apparatus including a three-point hitch frame for attaching to a vehicle and to a tool bar assembly. Three-point hitch frame includes L-shaped retaining members for engaging the tool bar assembly and may be substantially U-shaped. The invention is also embodied in an agricultural apparatus with a hitch frame for attaching to a vehicle and to a tool bar assembly and including a metering hopper system attached to the upper side of the hitch frame. The invention is also embodied in an improved ground contact metering wheel assembly for maintaining contact with the ground even on uneven terrain. The present invention has particular applicability as an interseeding apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1992Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: Clemson UniversityInventors: Clarence E. Patent number: 4913241Abstract: A rod weeder attachment including a clamp arrangement for mounting upon a tool bar of an agricultural implement, an arm which extends rearwardly from the clamp and is spring biased downwardly toward the ground, a ground wheel mounted upon the rear end of the arm which is a peripheral surface for running upon the ground and for defining the height of the arm above the ground, a pair of shanks which extend downwardly from the arm, a rod support on a lower end of the shanks in bearings which allow rotation of the rod about its axis and a drive arrangement which communicates drive from the ground wheel to the rod to rotate the rod as it moves through the ground. The arm is formed in two parts a rear part of which carries the ground wheel and is freely pivotal. The free pivot action of the rear part allows the ground wheel to move forwardly when inoperative so that its periphery is below the level of the rod.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1989Date of Patent: April 3, 1990Inventor: Duane Haukaas

Patent number: 4259872Abstract: A ground wheel drive apparatus for producing rotational power to drive seed planters, fertilizer applicators or other devices of the type carried on a farm machine. The apparatus includes a fixed frame for mounting on the toolbar of the farm machine and that frame has a transverse drive shaft journaled thereon. A trailing frame is pivotably carried on the transverse drive shaft and has a ground engaging wheel journaled on its extending end. One end of the transverse drive shaft is coupled to the ground engaging wheel and the other end is coupled to the devices on the farm machine so that rotation of the wheel drives the transverse shaft which in turn drives the devices on the farm machine.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1979Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Inventor: Earl E. Patent number: 4137853Abstract: A pull type folding grain drill driven by the gauge wheels including pivoting legs carrying the gauge wheels which drive a clutch shaft through a first chain and sprocket drive, the clutch shaft axis being offset from the pivoting leg axis. A second chain and sprocket drive between the dispensing seed shaft and the clutch shaft including an idler pulley having cam means on the end thereof for disengaging a clutch on the clutch shaft when the pivoting legs are rotated to lift the planter out of the ground in the transport position.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1977Date of Patent: February 6, 1979Inventor: Harley G. Patent number: 4033416Abstract: A cutting blade is carried on a shaft rotatable about an axis positioned adjacent a row crop. The blade extends across the longitudinal centerline of the row and cuts plants as the machine moves forward until a sensing means registering on forwardly positioned plants actuates the knife and causes it to rotate rearwardly along the row and away from the next plant in the row to be retained. The rotation continues until a knife portion is now positioned on the front side of the plant to be retained and a portion of the knife extends rearwardly along the side opposite the axis of rotation of the blade. The machine continuing to move forward will again clear plants from the row until the sensing means actuates the blade to rotate again thereby causing predetermined plants to be retained while plants inbetween are thinned out.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1975Date of Patent: July 5, 1977Assignee: Orthman Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: Henry K.
