Hand Tool Patents (Class 172/371)
  • Patent number: 4515223
Abstract: A hand operated weeding device. The device is used in weeding such places as flower beds and vegetable gardens. It comprises a weed displacing structure composed of sections which have multiple functions. One section, when operated under the surface of the soil, is used as a self stabilizer of its operating depth in the soil; it crumbles the soil it passes under, the soil being around the top sections of the cut off weed roots; and it has a forward cutting edge. A second section further crumbles soil around this top part of the roots and pushes most of these root parts with attached weed tops out of the soil and pushes them all away. Weeds cut off on the surface of the ground are also pushed away.

  • Patent number: 4351395
Abstract: A one-piece sidewalk edger and lawn trimmer is disclosed. The one-piece edger-trimmer may be attached to a hoe by removable clamping means. The combined edger-trimmer-hoe allows control of the depth of the groove which is made in the ground during the operation of the implement without the need for making a separate adjustment of the implement. The hoe portion scrapes the upper surface of the sidewalk and collects the cuttings which fall upon the sidewalk. A one-piece edger-trimmer-hoe is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4191261
Abstract: A hand, utility tool for general hoeing and cultivating purposes but being particularly adapted for the making of furrows for planting of seeds. The tool is capable of quickly and efficiently producing seed furrows by virtue of the unique design of the device. This design including an arcuate upper portion provided with a central opening. This upper portion is attached to a handle on the rearward edge thereof and converges to a downwardly curving central member along the forward edge thereof. The central member is affixed to a triangular body or sweep at its lower end, whereby the triangular body is separated from the upper portion. The triangular body is provided with two diverging blades having a twist therein, so that the trailing edge is slightly higher than the leading edge.

  • Patent number: 4177864
Abstract: A gardening tool with a long handle, having a small flat planar portion disposed at approximately right angles to the handle and connected to the handle by a semi-circular rectangular rod portion. A straight portion is formed, extending from the partial circular portion, to attach to the long handle. The small flat portion has a taper both in depth and in width to a free cutting edge. A notch is formed in the middle of the free cutting edge. Carbide tips can be provided on the free cutting edge for increased wear resistance. The garden tool can be used for cultivating or furrowing a row to a depth of five to six inches for seed planting. When pulled through the earth, the partial circular portion easily rolls the dirt away so that there is no jam up of soil in the rod support portion. The rod member is formed from spring steel to provide for a strong, resilient tool member. The length of the flat planar portion is relatively small being of only slighter greater length than width.

  • Patent number: 4164984
Abstract: A garden implement including an elongate, manually engageable handle and a working head at one end of the handle; the head is Z-shaped and has straight laterally spaced parallel cutting blades, a straight central member extending diagonally between oppositely related ends of the blades and joined therewith at acute angles and guard plates at right angle to and extending laterally inwardly from the other ends of the blades; the head is established of thin, narrow strap steel, the opposite edges of which are sharpened to define oppositely disposed cutting edges which are disposed longitudinally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the implement. The implement further includes coupling structure to couple the one end of the handle with the diagonal member, at right angle to and intermediate the ends of that member.

  • Patent number: 4090298
Abstract: A golf tee awl for making holes in the ground to make it easier to insert golf tees. The awl has a circular knob-shaped handle with a sharpened shank or spike protruding therefrom and a protective sheath which covers the sharpened shank when the awl is not in use. The sheath can be fastened to the belt of the user or to a golf cart or golf accessory holder. The sheath and handle are preferably made of plastic and the shank is preferably metal.

  • Patent number: 4037668
Abstract: A gardening implement used to hoe the earth, having a narrow blade portion substantially perpendicular to longitudinal axis of the handle. The handle supports an asymetrically proportioned weight secured selectively along two opposed longitudinal notches extending the length of the handle and utilized to effect the balance and inertial characteristics of the hoe.

  • Patent number: 4002207
Abstract: A hand tool used to manage and cultivate soil in confined areas, as planters and pots, for growing plants. The tool has an elongated handle having an end integral with an earthworking implement. The handle has triangularly related linear sides which taper inwardly toward the earthworking implement, wherein the sides are adapted to be engaged by the first and second fingers and thumb of the user. On the end of the handle opposite to the earthworking implement, the sides converge into a cylindrical section terminating in a knob. The earthworking implement includes a body having a plurality of teeth. The body can be in the shape of a shovel, pick or rake.

  • Patent number: 3981043
Abstract: A hand grip is slidably disposed on the handle of a tool, of the type normally requiring the use of two hands such as an ax, broom or shovel, for grasping by one of the hands of the user, and for movement between a stop disposed proximate the free end of the handle and a stop, if required, disposed proximate the tool end of the handle. The hand grip is relatively rigid in directions generally parallel to the length of the tool handle; but can be compressible in directions perpendicular to the length of the tool handle to facilitate a non-slidable grasping of the tool handle when required. End pieces compressible in directions parallel to the length of the tool handle may be fitted to each end of the hand grip to absorb shocks which might otherwise be encountered at the extremities of travel of the hand grip.
