Abstract: The invention relates to a compound cable, such as an aluminum cable, an aluminum alloy cable, aluminum cable steel reinforced or an aluminum alloy cable steel reinforced with reduced audible noise for use in a high voltage transmission line. The surface of each of the aluminum wires to constitute the outermost layer of the cable is treated in water or aqueous vapor of more than 90.degree. C. so as to form a hydrophilic hydrated film on said surface, or more than 3 grooves are provided on the outer periphery of each of the aluminum wires in excess of 30% of such wires to constitute the outermost layer of the cable, a hydrated film being caused to form on the surface including the grooves thereof, so that the raindrops adhering to the surface may readily disappear due to the improved hydrophilic property and draining property of the surface of the cable thereby preventing the development of the corona discharge.

  • Patent number: 4836504
Abstract: Disclosed is a rail-type fence using electricity which includes a plurality of support posts between which are extended continuous electrical wires. The electrical wire is enclosed within and supports a conductive tubular rail. The wire is held against the inner wall of the tubular rail by end plugs and splices. An alternate embodiment of the rail-type fence includes a plurality of electrified wires positioned within the outer surface of the walls of a nonconductive tubular rail. In this embodiment, a conductive end plug transfers electricity from the electrical wire within the tubular rail to the electrified wires embedded in the rail's walls.

  • Patent number: 4759805
Abstract: The surface of an aluminum conductor is roughened, for example, by blasting. A hydrophilic film such as a boehmite film, an anodic oxide film and a chemical conversion film is formed on the roughened surface. A protective film made of a wetting agent or a hydrophilic resin is formed on the hydrophilic film. The conductor may comprise a compressed aluminum conductor.

  • Patent number: 4760296
Abstract: Resinous compositions used as electric insulation have unique corona-resistance increased from 10- to 100-fold or more by the addition of organoaluminate, organosilicate or fine alumina or silica of critical particle size, and dynamoelectric machines and transformers incorporating coils made of wire strands coated with these novel compositions consequently have substantially increased service lives.

  • Patent number: 4726991
Abstract: A material provides protection against electrical overstress transients having rise times as rapid as a few nanoseconds or less. The material comprises a matrix formed of a mixture of separate particles of conductive materials and separate particles of semiconductor materials coated with insulating material to provide chains of the particles within the matrix with interparticle separation distances along the chains less than several hundred angstroms, thereby to permit quantum-mechanical tunneling of electrons between the separate particles in response to high energy electrical transients.

  • Patent number: 4506110
Abstract: A corona tube is provided wherein the tube is flexible so that it can fit on any three dimensional container rim. The tube can be a flexible steel tube which is a standard commercial variety of corrugated steel tube which is usually used to contain wires or the like. The tube has a slotted edge along its length, is cut to a length to the periphery of the rim and bent in the shape of the rim. The slot of the flexible tube is placed over the edge of the rim and thereafter the tube can be welded to the rim.

  • Patent number: 4473765
Abstract: A grading layer for a slot armor in an electric machine employs a layer of semi-conducting particles of silicon carbide bonded to the face of insulation of the slot armor. A layer of a tough high temperature paper such as an aramid paper separates the silicon carbide from the windings. The voltage gradient at the radially outerward extremity of the windings is capacitively coupled through the aramid paper to the silicon carbide layer wherein span-wise conduction decreases the peak voltage gradient to reduce the likelihood of the formation of corona and flashover.

  • Patent number: 4471160
Abstract: An improved electrical terminal designed to eliminate arcing and corona effects has a substantially spherical post with one or more circumferential slots perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the terminal. In one embodiment, each slot is adapted to receive a wire of predetermined gage in a close-fitting wrapped configuration. The outer diameter of the wire does not extend beyond the circumference of the sphere. The number and size of the slots depends on the number and gage of the wire(s) to be connected. More than one wire can be connected in a single slot, either by wrapping the wires concentrically or in parallel planes within the same slot. Solder is applied to the wrapped wires to form a secure, smooth and rounded connection.

  • Patent number: 4458107
Abstract: According to the method, a strip of nonconductive, fibrous material having a capillary effect with respect to water is fixed in close contact with each conductor of the transmission line. The capillary effect of the fibrous material ensures the formation of thin filaments of water on the surface of the conductor when the same is wet. These filaments of water promote the generation of a corona effect in the form of permanent discharges resulting in a luminescent phenomena and inhibit the occurrence of pulsatory discharges. A conductor for aerial, high voltage, electric power transmission line which allows the above method to be carried out, is also disclosed.
