Below-ground (1) Hammer, Or (2) Impact Members Patents (Class 175/293)
  • Patent number: 10927612
Abstract: The present invention provides a downhole auxiliary drilling apparatus, including an impact energy generator capable of converting the energy of the drilling fluid to the axial impact energy, and an impact energy distributor capable of redistributing the impact energy generated by the impact energy generator to convert the axial impact force into a combined impact force, which provides the drilling bit with a high-frequently changing combined impact force, thus greatly improving the rock breaking efficiency and the rate of penetration of the drilling tool. The downhole auxiliary drilling apparatus is further provided with a shock-absorbing and torque-stabilizing device arranged between the impact energy generator and the impact energy distributor, which can reduce the axial vibration of the drilling tool and the damage on the drilling bit, and greatly extend the lifetime of the drilling bit.

  • Patent number: 10900343
Abstract: A system or method for drilling includes autonomously controlling a rotary or percussive drilling process as it transitions through multiple materials with very different dynamics. The method determines a drilling medium based on real-time measurements and comparison to prior drilling data, and identifies the material type, drilling region, and approximately optimal setpoint based on data from at least one operating condition. The controller uses these setpoints initially to execute an optimal search to maximize performance by minimizing mechanical specific energy.

  • Patent number: 8881844
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system for steering the direction of a borehole advanced by cutting action of a rotary drill bit by periodically varying action of a drill bit while continuously rotating a drill string to which the drill bit is operationally attached. The steering system can include a bit perturbation device cooperating with a bent housing subsection and operationally connected to the drill string and to the drill bit. Drill bit action can be varied by periodically varying the rotation speed and/or rate of penetration of the drill bit. Periodic drill bit action results in preferential cutting of material from a predetermined arc of the borehole wall which, in turn, results in borehole deviation. Action of the drill bit can be varied independently of the rotation rate of the drill string.

Abstract: A series of jet nozzles have a telescoping structure designed to impact the borehole wall and initiate a fracture. The nozzles can be extended through fluid pumped through them or with some mechanical force from within the bottom hole assembly. The leading ends of the telescoping assembly can be sharp and hardened to facilitate the initiation of a formation fracture in an open hole. The telescoping structures can be disposed in a single or multiple rows with the circumferential spacing being such that each telescoping structure is designed to cover a target circumferential distance of 45 degrees or less so that jetted fluid from at least one jet will be within 22.5 degrees of a location of maximum formation stresses to reduce the tortuosity of the created fractures from jetting through the nozzles with possible enhancement of the fracturing from added annulus pressure.
