  • Patent number: 7225881
Abstract: The auger is attached to a spiral gear and a spring, the apparatus then being connected to the downhole, leading end of the logging sonde. When the auger nose of the modified sonde assembly strikes any of various obstructions on the sidewall that cause it to lose momentum, such as a rock ledge, the momentum of the heavy sonde causes the auger nose assembly to compress, forcing the auger to rotate on the spiral gear. The rotational action thus produced allows the auger to pull the sonde to pass the obstruction. After the obstruction has been passed, the potential energy stored in the spring induces the auger to return to its original extended position, whereupon it is ready to encounter and pass another obstacle.

  • Patent number: 7104345
Abstract: A connector assembly for connecting with a rotatable shaft is provided. The connector assembly includes a mating sleeve threadably coupleable about the shaft and a center sleeve sized and shaped for deployment between the shaft and the mating sleeve. The center sleeve includes pluralities of splines formed on inner and outer surfaces thereof. The splines on the inner surface of the center sleeve are engageable with splines on the outer surface of the shaft and the splines on the outer surface of the center sleeve are engageable with splines on the inner surface of the mating sleeve. Exemplary embodiments of this invention are useful in downhole tools to reduce make-up torque requirements of the mating sleeve, and therefore may advantageously increase the cyclic torsional and/or bending load capacity of the shaft, while also increasing the total torsional load capacity of the connection.

  • Patent number: 7096962
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and equipment for recovering use of a well-bore in circumstances where the well bore has become blocked by downhole equipment. The invention provides a method comprising the steps of separating, at a release joint, a portion of equipment from a jammed portion (6) of equipment; running the separated portion of equipment uphole out of the wellbore (100); running a deflector assembly (60) downhole into the wellbore (100); and deflecting a milling tool (64) from the wellbore into surrounding formation. The method is characterised by restricting relative movement between the deflector assembly (60) and the wellbore (100) by engaging, prior to deflecting the milling tool (64), the deflector assembly (60) with said jammed portion (6) of equipment.

  • Patent number: 7093654
Abstract: The present invention includes a downhole component adapted for transmitting downhole data. The downhole component includes a threaded end on a downhole component. The threaded end furthermore includes an interior region, and exterior region, and a mating surface wherein a cavity is formed. A data transmission element is disposed in the cavity and displaces a volume of the cavity. At least one passageway is formed in the threaded region between interior and exterior regions. The passageway is in fluid communication with both the interior and exterior regions and thereby relieves pressure build up of thread lubricant upon tool joint make up.

  • Patent number: 7088260
Abstract: A communication method for retrieving stored data from an MWD tool, through an antenna used for conventional EM data telemetry. The method comprises establishing electrical contact between a surface transceiver and an EM data telemetry antenna upon retrieval to the surface. The MWD tool then transfers data through the antenna, the data being received by the surface transceiver. Also provided is an electrical isolation connector subassembly comprising an electrically insulative coating to electrically isolate the splitsub components, thereby forming the antenna for data transfer and EM data telemetry.

  • Patent number: 7083006
Abstract: An MWD method and apparatus for determining parameters of interest in a formation has a sensor assembly mounted on a slidable sleeve slidably coupled to a longitudinal member, such as a section of drill pipe. When the sensor assembly is held in a non-rotating position, for instance for obtaining the measurements, the longitudinal member is free to rotate and continue drilling the borehole, wherein downhole measurements can be obtained with substantially no sensor movement or vibration. This is particularly useful in making NMR measurements due to their susceptibility to errors due caused by tool vibration. In addition, the substantially non-rotating arrangement of sensors makes it possible to efficiently carry out VSPs, reverse VSPs and looking ahead of the drill bit. A clamping device is used, for instance, to hold the sensor assembly is held in the non-rotating position.

  • Patent number: 7083008
Abstract: An apparatus and related method are useful for compensating the pressure of drilling fluid in a drill collar disposed in a borehole. The apparatus includes a stator adapted for being secured within the drill collar against rotation relative to the drill collar, and a shaft rotatably carried within the stator so as to define a fluid-conducting annular gap between the shaft and the stator. The shaft has a fluid-conducting channel extending axially therethrough. A rotor is secured about the shaft for rotation therewith. A portion of the rotor is disposed adjacent a portion of the stator so as to define an inlet between the rotor and stator portions through which drilling fluid in the drill collar will be conducted. The rotor portion further cooperates with the stator and the shaft to define a first annular cavity that fluidly communicates with the gap and the inlet. A rotary seal is disposed in the first cavity for isolating the gap from the inlet.

  • Patent number: 7059429
Abstract: The present invention provides a drilling assembly and method that is especially useful for a bottom hole drilling assembly for drilling a borehole through an earth formation. In one embodiment, the drilling assembly is preferably comprised of a tungsten alloy which is sufficiently plastic to be able to withstand the bending, torsional, and compressive stresses which occur in a bottom hole drilling assembly. The tungsten alloy weight section may be axially moveable with respect to an outer tubular and when mounted within the bottom hole assembly, acts to place the outer tubular in tension to provide a stiffer bottom hole assembly.
