The cutting zone, load zone and wear zone of each cutting element may be analyzed by finely meshing each cutting element into many small segments. The number of contacts between each meshed segment and portions of a downhole formation may be determined during discrete drilling time periods. A distribution of sliding velocity for each segment relative to portions of the downhole formation may also be determined during the discrete drilling time periods. Force profiles for each cutting zone may be used to determine associated loading zones. A wear profile for each cutting element may be estimated by combining the associated force profile with the associated distribution of sliding velocity.

A first layer of a hardfacing composition of carbide particles dispersed in a nickel-based matrix is formed on the bit leg. A second layer of a hardfacing composition of carbide particles dispersed in an iron-based matrix that is formed on the cone. The first layer of hardfacing is applied by conveying carbide particles in a nickel-based matrix through a pulsed plasma transferred arc process. The second layer of hardfacing is applied with a torch and a hardfacing tube comprising carbide particles held within an iron-based tube.

    Abstract: The harmful effects of tracking are reduced for a drill bit having roller cones with at least one of the outermost rows of active teeth containing one or more teeth having a height that does not extend to the height of at least one of the outermost rows on another roller cone on the bit. The crest on this tooth may have a length in a circumferential direction that is wider than an overall width of the tooth in the outer to inner direction. The invention may be used on any cutter row, not just the outermost row. The design may be used on a different roller cone or row, or more than one cutter row. The anti-tracking feature may be located between the leading and trailing edges of the tooth on one or more roller cones.

A multi-pass weld procedure may be employed to affix the shank and bit body to one another wherein welds may be formed so that one weld originates at a circumferential position that differs from the origination circumferential position of its immediately preceding weld by at least about 90%. Further, a stress state may be developed within the multi-pass weld. A method of manufacture is also disclosed.

    Abstract: Fibers for diamond-impregnated cutting tools and their associated methods for manufacture and use are described. A matrix is formed that contains fibers made from carbon, glass, ceramic, polymer, and the like. The matrix is then sintered to form a cutting portion of a drill bit. The type and concentration of the fibers can be modified to control the tensile strength and the erosion rate of the matrix to optimize the cutting performance of the tools. Additionally, the fibers may be added to the cutting section to weaken the structure and allow higher modulus binders to be used for the cutting tools at a lower cost, allowing the amount of fibers to be tailored to retain the diamonds in the cutting portion for the desired amount. As the cutting portion erodes, the fibers may also increase the lubricity at the face of the cutting portion.

The supporting metal of the outer surface of the bit leg may also have an upper cylindrical section and a lower tapered section. The hardfacing has a constant outer diameter but will taper in thickness in the lower tapered section. The thickness of the hardfacing may also vary in a circumferential direction with a greater thickness over at least one of the corners.

    Abstract: Ultrahard composite constructions comprise a plurality of first phases dispersed within a matrix second phase, wherein each can comprise an ultrahard material including PCD, PcBN, and mixtures thereof.
