Publication number: 20040050594Abstract: An apparatus and technique that extend the useful weighing range of a weight scale is provided. A preferred embodiment comprises a screw and a moveable weight. A head of the screw fits into a notch on the weight scale and the location moveable weight is varied in relation to the screw head by driving the screw into or away from the center of the moveable weight via a tapped receiver of the moveable weight. In a second embodiment, a supplemental weight has a base and a movable weight that are associated and positionally adjustable along at least one linear axis. In a preferred embodiment, a threaded screw length is used to adjust the relative positions of the base and the movable weight. The supplemental weight is removably coupled with the weight scale and calibrated into an operating state, wherefrom the weighing range of the scale may be extended.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 12, 2002Publication date: March 18, 2004Inventor: Ted A. Patent number: 6600110Abstract: A portable scale is provided that includes a fulcrum, a balance beam pivotally mounted on the fulcrum, the balance beam supporting a load pan on one end and including an elongated portion having a measurement strip extending along the elongated portion of the balance beam. The portable scale includes a dynamic weight movable along the elongated portion of the balance beam. The dynamic weight includes a display unit on the elongated portion of the balance beam for detecting the location of the dynamic weight along the measurement strip, for electrically converting the location to a weight measurement, and for displaying the weight measurement. The portable scale may include luminescent material.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2001Date of Patent: July 29, 2003Assignee: Gram PrecisionInventors: Mohan Thadani, Peter Klein

Patent number: 6268573Abstract: A portable postal scale for determining whether the weight of a letter exceeds the maximum for a given amount of postage, for example, one ounce. The scale comprises an elongated beam having a letter holder, a fulcrum, a leveling assembly and a preloaded portion and a wedge shaped piece. The letter holder comprises two upward facing arms forming a narrow slot for holding the letter to be weighed in an upright position. The leveling assembly, which allows the scale to be used on an unlevel surface, comprises a leveling bubble with scribe lines. The portion of the beam from the fulcrum to the end opposite the letter holder is the preloaded portion that has sufficient weight to balance the beam when a letter of predetermined weight is placed in the letter holding slot. In use, the end of the beam opposite the letter holder is placed on top of the wedge shaped piece, which is moved forward or backward until the leveling assembly is level.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1999Date of Patent: July 31, 2001Inventor: William Hartselle, III

Patent number: 5767456Abstract: A portable postal scale for determining whether the weight of a letter exceeds the maximum for a given amount of postage, for example, one ounce. The scale comprises an elongated beam having a letter holding means, a fulcrum and a preloaded portion. The letter holding means comprises two upward facing arms forming a narrow opening or slot for holding the letter to be weighed in an upright position. The part of the beam from the fulcrum to the end opposite the letter holding means is the preloaded portion; the preloaded portion has sufficient weight to balance the beam when a letter of predetermined weight is placed in the slot. A calibration means for the beam and longitudinally located recesses made suitable to accept a movable counterweight for determining additional increments of weight are provided in other embodiments.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1996Date of Patent: June 16, 1998Inventor: William Hartselle, III

Patent number: 4766965Abstract: An apparatus for depositing of reference weights in an electronic scale consisting of two levers swivelable around vertical axes, one end of each lever is always in contact with a cam disc attached on a vertically disposed shaft and the other end of which is developed as a gliding shoe which may be pushed below the lifting tray. By rotating the cam shaft, the lifting trays cause the reference weights to be deposited by the cam discs at first each individually one after the other and then jointly onto the carriers.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1987Date of Patent: August 30, 1988Assignee: Mettler Instrumente AGInventor: Paul Luchinger
