Patent number: 5758891Abstract: A new spring step for the rear ends of vehicles for facilitating access to the back ends of high vehicles, such as trucks and utility vehicles. The spring step includes a step member having a horizontal upper surface. A pair of semi-rigid members, preferably coil springs, are attached to the step member and extend vertically upward from the upper surface. The ends of the semi-rigid members are removably attached to a channel member which is used to secure the step member and semi-rigid members to a support structure, such as a rear bumper, of the vehicle. The semi-rigid members are stiff enough to permit an individual to stand on the step member without significant deflection of the semi-rigid members, so that the step functions similarly to conventional steps on the rear ends of vehicles. However, if the step encounters an obstacle or obstruction while the vehicle is backing up, the semi-rigid members resiliently flex so that the step member deflects. Thus, little or no damage is done to the step.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1997Date of Patent: June 2, 1998Inventor: Norman Wilson Fox, Jr.

Patent number: 4883145Abstract: A simple apparatus is disclosed that reduces the risk of low-back injury to workers in elevated, partially enclosed, aerial baskets. The preferred embodiment basically comprises a circular well within the floor of the basket that is surrounded by a raised footrest platform adapted to receive on foot of the worker. Between the footrest platform and a base of the well is a cylindrical wall that prohibits forward movement under the footrest platform. In operations, when the worker has to perform manual handling tasks outboard of the basket, one foot is raised out of the well and extended forward onto the footrest platform, while the other foot remains below and behind the raised foot, on the base of the well. The worker has thereby adopted a forward leaning posture instead of a forward bending posture. Consequently, the worker retains the optimal curvature of the spine, while achieving a biomechanical advantage that reduces the work demand on the lower back.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1989Date of Patent: November 28, 1989Inventor: Charles D. Patent number: 4108458Abstract: This device consists primarily of a pipe which telescopingly receives a rod having a foot guard attached at one end. The device includes a plate welding to the pipe which bolts to the truck body, and the opposite end of the pipe is welded to a plate which abuts with the lower portion of the front fender of the truck. A rubber gasket on the assembly, serves as friction means, against the rod so as to prevent it from sliding outwards of the vehicle, when it is in motion.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1976Date of Patent: August 22, 1978Inventor: Charles Owens

Patent number: 4100997Abstract: A molded plastic fastener of the sort which may be used as part of steps for a concrete manhole has molded plastic, circular threads or projections which are tapered and deformable so that when inserted in a drilled hole of slightly smaller diameter the projections will be deformed and bend under pressure to retain the fastener in place.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1976Date of Patent: July 18, 1978Inventor: Bobbie D. Patent number: 4054298Abstract: A step member for attachment to the frame of a tractor. The step member includes a pair of flexible cables each of which has a coupling member at the lower end thereof that extends through an enlarged aperture in a foot supporting portion and serves to connect the latter to the cables so as to permit limited movement of the foot supporting portion relative to the coupling members. The upper ends of the cables are pivotally connected to the frame in a manner that allows the foot supporting portion to swing in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tractor when the foot supporting portion encounters an obstacle.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1976Date of Patent: October 18, 1977Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Vincas Urbaitis

Patent number: 4054299Abstract: A step member for attachment to a frame of a tractor that includes a single flexible cable having the opposite ends thereof provided with bracket members which serve to attach the cable to the tractor frame so as to form the cable into a generally U-shaped configuration and provide a pair of vertically oriented arcuate legs and a substantially horizontal base the latter of which has a foot supporting plate secured thereto of a length substantially less than the distance between the coupling members.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1976Date of Patent: October 18, 1977Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Vincas Urbaitis

Patent number: 3976164Abstract: In an earth-moving vehicle, a step assembly having a step member and an attachment device is affixed outwardly of the frame of the vehicle to allow longitudinal displacement of the step member upon contacting an obstruction. The attachment device comprises a plurality of flexible members each having a flexible cable with rigid threaded rods affixed at each end for securing the step member to the vehicle frame or bracket affixed thereto; and an elastomeric tubular member encompassing the flexible cable, the elastomeric member acting as a spacer to spatially remove the step member from the vehicle frame while allowing the step member to deflect longitudinally relative to the vehicle frame upon contacting an obstruction adjacent to the path of the vehicle and to return the step member to its operating position upon clearing the obstruction.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1975Date of Patent: August 24, 1976Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Calvin L. Miller

Patent number: 3971456Abstract: A handle-rung module adapted to be secured to a mounting surface to provide a handle and/or rung which is recessed and substantially flush with the mounting surface, the module is installed in a rectangular aperture in the mounting surface and is constructed to retain a closed surface when secured in the mounting surface, the module includes a longitudinally extending inwardly projecting segment having the arcuate contour of a longitudinal segment of a cylinder wall, with end walls contoured and connected to the ends of the inwardly projecting segment, and a longitudinally extending cross member centrally spanning the inwardly projecting segment and connected to the end walls, the cross member being adapted to provide a grip or step and the inwardly projecting segment being adapted to provide a recess for receiving the knuckles of a clenched hand or the end of a foot.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1975Date of Patent: July 27, 1976Inventor: Everett R. Yonce

Patent number: 3967695Abstract: A yieldable vehicle step is provided having a rigid foot support member pendantly supported from the side of a vehicle frame by a pair of relatively strong, but deflectable legs. Each leg is constructed from a chain and an outer deformable stiffener member circumposed about such chain. The outer member affords sufficient lateral rigidity or stiffness to the legs so as to minimize undue swinging movement of the step when in use, but which automatically returns to its suspended position whenever deflected by contact with an obstruction during movement of the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1975Date of Patent: July 6, 1976Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Bennett N. Waddell
