Fixed-speed Engagement Patents (Class 192/105R)
  • Patent number: 5779020
Abstract: An assembly for rotatably mounting a shaft to a member includes a passage formed in the member within which the shaft is received, and a series of grooves formed in an internal wall which defines the passage. The grooves extend parallel to the axis of the passage and the shaft, and a pin member is received within each groove. Each pin member has a diameter greater than the depth of the groove, so that a portion of the pin member extends beyond the internal wall. The shaft is engaged by the pin members, which function to maintain the shaft out of engagement with the internal wall. The groove and pin member construction provides a bearing between the shaft and the member, without the need and space requirements of a cage typically associated with a conventional preassembled needle bearing package. The invention can be used in any application in which a shaft is to be rotatably mounted to a member, and illustratively may be used in a centrifugal clutch assembly.

  • Patent number: 5560460
Abstract: A one-way clutch includes a first engagement element of a rotation transmitting element that is attached to a rotatable drive member. The first engagement element is forced toward a second engagement element that is attached to near the center or to the radially inner perimeter of an annular outer edge of a driven member. When the drive member rotates in one direction, the first and second engagement elements connect and the rotation of the rotatable drive member is transmitted to the rotatable driven member. The rotation transmitting element is connected to the drive member in a manner that allows it to rotate freely and so that the first engagement element may separate from or connect to the second engagement element.

  • Patent number: 5048652
Abstract: A progressive clutch includes a centrifugal clutch 10 attached to a drive shaft and inserted into a clutch housing assembly 16 to engage with clutch material 28 during low rpm operation. As the rpm of the input drive shaft 2 increases, the centrifugal force on pellets 32 overcomes the force of compression springs 34, and extension springs 40 pull a pin engagement assembly 30 towards the clutch housing assembly 16 thus engaging pins 38 into elongated holes 42 to provide positive drive from the drive shaft 2 to the driven shaft 21.

  • Patent number: 4984669
Abstract: A drum assembly for a centrifugal clutch which is rotatable about an axis of rotation is disclosed. The drum assembly has a generally cylindrical drum having an open end with a peripheral interior circular track extending concentrically around the axis. The circular track is to be engaged by throw weights of a driver when the driver reaches sufficient rotary velocity. The opposite end of the cylindrical drum has a central neck defining a passage therethrough into which an output shaft is fitted. The output shaft is brazed to and extends axially away from the neck and has a central, axially extending recess in its end away from the drum. A plurality of identical washers formed as a stack are embedded into the recess each having a central noncircular opening and a circular rim having a progression of sharp tooth-like serrations. The washers are composed of material harder than the material of the output shaft so that the serrations can be embedded in the recess.

  • Patent number: 4200175
Abstract: A device for controlling a motor vehicle clutch is disclosed. A hydraulic control system coupled to the disengagement lever of a clutch selectively engages and disengages the clutch responsive to a control signal. The control signal is generated by a control circuit which receives a first signal representative of the speed of the vehicle and a second signal representative of the rotary speed of the engine. The control circuit varies the control signal during each engagement of the clutch as a function of two components: a first component which initially varies as a substantially linear function of the speed of the vehicle and thereafter varies as a positive exponential function of the speed of the vehicle; and a second component which varies as a substantially linear function of the speed of the engine. Both components vary in a direction which drives the clutch further into engagement for increasing vehicle and engine speed.

  • Patent number: 3997041
Abstract: A one way clutch in which the tiltable sprags rock away from contact with the outer race upon its overrunning of the inner race and to so remain until the inner race revolves in the same direction as the outer race whereupon centrifugal force acting on the sprags rotate them into full engagement with both races and couples the races together.
