  • Patent number: 4441596
Abstract: A vehicle inching mechanism is interlocked with a braking mechanism so as to overlap their operating ranges without hampering the low-speed start or stop of the vehicle by the inching mechanism. An inching pedal and a brake pedal are mounted side by side on a stationary shaft via sleeves rotatably fitted thereover and linked to an inching valve and a brake master cylinder, respectively. The sleeves have square jaws at their opposed ends for mating engagement, with clearances therebetween to allow rotation of either sleeve relative to the other within limits. A torsion spring is anchored at one end to the inching pedal sleeve and held at the other end against an abutment on the brake pedal sleeve. Upon depression of the inching pedal, therefore, not only the inching valve but also the brake master cylinder is activated, first through the torsion spring and then through the intermeshing jaws. The depression of the brake pedal results only in the actuation of the master cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4381833
Abstract: An improved coupling disk and friction ring arrangement provides for long life, high speed operation of clutches and/or brake devices operated by fluid pressure as in vacuum operated clutch and/or brake devices. The improved coupling disk has stepped ring-shaped portions tapering to a minimal outer annular disk portion having greatest flexibility in the overall flexible disk. The outer portion contacts a friction ring to seal a gap therebetween and provide coupling between an axle on which the disk is mounted and a housing to give either clutch or brake output. The friction ring acts in coupling with the disk while an encircling peripheral annular portion of the disk provides a leakage gap of constant predetermined value unaffected by wear in the disk or friction material. Preferably the gap is formed by burnishing the friction material using the eccentricity of the disk to define a minimum gap. The gap has a size such as to provide a block to leakage air flow.

  • Patent number: 4360092
Abstract: In first gear, a brake band prevents one gear of the planetary gearing of an automatic transmission from rotating. In second gear, a clutch causes this gear to rotate as a unit with the drive and driven shaft of the transmission. For an upshift under load, the clutch is engaged slowly, thereby decreasing the required brake torque. The brake force is therefore decreased at a corresponding rate. A switch having a movable contact is mounted so that the contact is moved in response to the reactive force created between the brake band and the gear box. This reactive force varies as a function of the brake force and also depends upon the direction of movement of the braked member. The switch is set to a threshold value which is substantially less than the brake force applied in first gear.

  • Patent number: 4125178
Abstract: An auxiliary drive is provided for a drive mechanism for a conveyor, the mechanism including a brake and clutch arrangement designed to facilitate the starting and stopping of the conveyor. The auxiliary drive is conveniently mounted on the mechanism and has a drive motor driving a gear through an intermediate pinion, a gear wheel fixed to the driven stage of the mechanism. The intermediate pinion is movable to engage both the gear wheel and gear to transmit drive from the motor to the driven stage but is actuable to discontinue such drive. The auxiliary drive is intended to provide a means whereby the driven stage may be run at a speed lower than its normal operating speed, a particular application being to conveyors of the scraper chain type which at times require tensioning or detensioning of the chain for maintenance purposes, but at speeds lower than can be achieved using the main drive motor.

  • Patent number: 4088209
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling steering clutches and independent brakes of a vehicle comprising a steering device responsive to a pair of clutch actuating steering levers for selectively and independently disengaging the clutches for steering purposes. Operation of a single brake pedal and the disengagement of at least one of the clutches selectively and independently engages the vehicles brakes. An inhibiting mechanism coupled to the steering device selectively inhibits either of the vehicle brakes from responding to actuation of the brake pedal when one of the steering levers is actuated to disengage the corresponding clutch, and prevents the opposite brake from being engaged during brake pedal operation. As a result, the vehicle may be steered while employing a pair of steering levers and a single foot pedal. A control system permits the vehicle to be stopped when both steering levers and the single foot pedal are actuated by inactivating the brake inhibiting mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4072222
Abstract: A single cycle control system for a press or the like in which interrupted stroke protection is combined with novel interconnections of the control components in the system such that the failure of any single control component cannot endanger the operator of the machine. Relay failure (even a simultaneous failure of two) is completely eliminated as a possible source of an unexpected repeat stroke of the machine. The solenoids for operating the air valves that control the operation of the machine are energized initially through the usual run switches for the machine, after which these solenoids are kept energized through separate holding circuits which include limit switches operated by the machine and switches operated by the respective air valves.

  • Patent number: 3971461
Abstract: An axially compact clutch and brake mechanism. Inner and outer concentrically mounted clutch and brake drums intermittently coupled respectively by packs of interleaved friction discs and plates are operated by a pressure plate disposed intermediate the clutch and brake disc and plate packs and responds to an annular hydraulic piston to alternately engage the clutch or engage the brake. Brake and clutch packs are axially spaced along the length of concentric input and output shafts while the piston is located radially inwardly of one of the packs and is not axially spaced therefrom so as to reduce the axial length of the assemblage. The mechanism further includes structure whereby the piston is not forced to rotate within its cylinder to thereby lengthen the life of the same.
