  • Patent number: 6015032
Abstract: A drive mechanism (20, 120) includes a driving rotary member (22, 122), a driven rotary member (24, 124), and a clutch (26, 126) operatively coupled between the driving member and the driven member and responsive to rotation of the driving member to automatically engage and rotate the driven member after a given amount of rotation of the driving member. The clutch is self-actuated in response to rotation of the driving member. A brake (36, 136) has a braking condition stopping rotation of the driven member, and a released condition permitting rotation of the driven member. Axial movement of the clutch face (34, 134) from its released position to its driving position also actuates the brake from its braking condition to its released condition. The drive is bidirectional, and is particularly useful in a nutational washing machine.

  • Patent number: 5293731
Abstract: A braking system for a rotary mower includes a brake element which is secured to an impeller and is urged by a spring normally into braking engagement with a fixed brake friction member. On start-up of a motor of the mower, rotation of the impeller causes axial movement of the brake element against the spring and out of braking engagement. Movement of the brake element may be assisted by mechanical means, for example by a multiple ball and ramp system or arrangement. In this embodiment, four equally spaced balls are normally located in ramped recesses formed in an upper face of an adaptor element, such that on start-up of the motor, the balls ramp up at least partially out of the recesses, and assist in urging a braking element and a friction element out of braking engagement with one another. This assist stops when the motor is turned off, the balls now moving back into their respective lowest positions in the recesses formed in the upper face of the adaptor element.

Abstract: In a drive unit for a motor vehicle a brake is provided for braking down the r.p.m. of the input shaft interconnecting the clutch with the gear box. The brake is actuated by an actuating ring serving also for disengaging the clutch. The actuating ring is connected to a diaphragm spring of the clutch release bearing and an axially extending sleeve. If the clutch linings are worn, the clutch engagement position of the diaphragm spring and the actuating ring is shifted in axial direction. In view of compensating for this axial shift, the sleeve is composed of two sleeve members, one of them being connected to the diaphragm spring and the other of them being connected to the actuating ring through the clutch release bearing and both of them being interconnected by thread means.

Abstract: A self-adjusting release system for the friction clutch of a motor vehicle wherein the output element of the clutch is or transmits torque to the input element of a change-speed transmission. The input member of the release system is a first lever which is pivotable by the clutch pedal and is automatically coupled to a second lever when it leaves its starting position in response to depression of the pedal whereby the second lever disengages the clutch. The first lever automatically engages a brake for the input element of the change-speed transmission as soon as the clutch is disengaged. A set of springs is provided to automatically return the levers to their starting positions when the pressure upon the clutch pedal is relaxed and to uncouple the second lever from the first lever in order to enable the second lever to change its angular position relative to the first lever for the purpose of compensating for wear upon component parts of the clutch, brake and/or release system.
