Abstract: In friction engagement device having forward clutch 5 and clutch operation pack 6 controlling engagement/disengagement operation of the forward clutch 5, the clutch operation pack 6 has hydraulic piston 61, engagement pressure piston chamber 62, snap ring 64, diaphragm spring 65 and ball lock mechanism BL. The diaphragm spring 65 provides biasing engagement force to the forward clutch 5 at a clutch side of the hydraulic piston 61. The ball lock mechanism BL restrains movement, in a disengagement direction, of the hydraulic piston 61 at a position where the forward clutch 5 is in an engagement state by the biasing engagement force by exerting ON pressure on the engagement pressure piston chamber 62, and after restraining the movement of the hydraulic piston 61, maintains the restraint of the disengagement direction movement of the hydraulic piston 61 even when the ON pressure of the engagement pressure piston chamber 62 is drawn.

  • Patent number: 8839930
Abstract: A device for controlling a rotating shifting element of an automatic transmission for a start/stop operation. The shifting element is actuated by an axially moving piston which is biased, in a disengaging direction, by a spring and biased, in an engaging direction, by hydraulic pressure supplied to a pressure space. At least one spring-loaded latch, which is able to move in the radial direction, is arranged in the pressure space. The spring-loaded latch, when the combustion engine is operating, rotates with the piston and acts upon the piston such that if the engine stops, the previously engaged shifting element is locked by spring force and, as the pressure decreases, the shifting element disengages, at most only slightly, and when the engine is re-started, the locking action is again released by centrifugal force, in opposition to the spring force, so that the piston remains engaged during the hydraulic pressure build-up in the pressure chamber.

  • Patent number: 8109376
Abstract: A device for operating a shifting element of a drive mechanism, having a piston positioned in a piston space to slide between first and second end positions. The piston is operated hydraulically and depends on the hydraulic pressure in the piston space and a force of a resetting mechanism acting on the piston, which opposes the activating force that is equivalent to the hydraulic pressure in the piston space. The transmission capacity of the shifting element is reduced by a force acting on the piston in the direction of the first end position and is increased by a force acting on the piston in the direction of its second end position. The piston is held by a mechanical holder against a force acting on the piston in the direction of the first end position in at least one preset position which is different from the first end position.

  • Patent number: 7891261
Abstract: A clutch actuation system for engaging and disengaging a clutch includes a hydraulically-actuated piston movable in response to hydraulic pressure to an apply position in which the piston is operable to engage the clutch. An electro mechanical actuator is movable in response to electric power to contact the piston at the apply position such that the clutch is maintained in an engaged state by the actuator, thereby permitting hydraulic pressure to be released. A method of controlling engagement of the clutch is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20090011890
Abstract: A locking differential includes a pair of annular clutch members that are normally displaced apart to effect engagement between clutch teeth on the remote ends of the clutch members and corresponding gear teeth on the adjacent ends of a pair of side gears between which the clutch members are colinearly arranged. When one output shaft overruns the other by a predetermined amount, the clutch member associated with the overrunning output shaft is disengaged from its associated side gear. A retaining device retains the clutch members in the disengaged condition until the overrunning condition is terminated. In one embodiment, the retaining device is a cam arm and follower pin arrangement that is connected between the clutch members and operates in conjunction with a pair of friction rings. In a second embodiment, the retaining device comprises a pair of holdout rings that operate between the clutch members and the side gears.
