  • Patent number: 5507377
Abstract: Inserted in a hollow drive cylinder, a simple push-pull shaft is connected to a cup, open at one end and having a rigid rim and a transverse rod across the open end of the cup. Captured between the transverse rod and the closed end of the cup is a V-shaped spring. Two hardened steel pins on the outside ends of the V-shaped spring inserted through holes in a drive cylinder are inserted into and retracted out of engagement with openings on an interior surface of a concentrically encircling drive ring in response to expansions and compressions of the spring caused by the rim of the cup moved by the push-pull shaft. The push-pull shaft is moved by a push-pull knob outside the cylinder or cable activating knob remote therefrom. The rigid rim of the cup pushes on the sloping sides of the spring to compress the spring which then disengages the pins from the drive ring.

  • Patent number: 5480015
Abstract: The present invention relates to a limit-torque coupling mechanism with delay restoring function. When the relative coupling portion is forced by torque to reverse the limit-torque coupling mechanism, a delay in the restoring function to reduce noise and frictional loss arising from subsequent relative sliding is accomplished so as to restore coupling during the decrease in torque difference or speed difference. To accomplish the aforesaid function lie in that, the design of the torque coupling mechanism being forcibly reversed includes a return motion damper to produce mechanical friction damping, fluid damping or magnetic damping.

  • Patent number: 5451070
Abstract: A treadle drive system operates comfortably in a standing or seated position with two toe or heel end pivoting treadles. A flexible drive line (chain, cable, belt, etc.) from each treadle drives a pair of forward biased driving rings (having sprockets, pulleys, belt wheels, etc.) concentrically encircling and driving a hollow drive cylinder. Concentrically encircling the cylinder, a driven ring in turn drives a rotating device. A positive engagement clutch between the hollow cylindrical hub and the driven ring allows the driven ring to be engaged or disengaged from the drive cylinder. Opposing holes transversely through the hollow drive cylinder engage pins on outer ends of a V-shaped spring. The pins are normally engaged in mating openings on an interior surface of the driven ring. A push-pull shaft with a cup having a rigid rim pushes against the sloping sides of the spring to disengage the pins from the driven shaft only. Pulling the shaft releases the spring reengaging the pins in the driven shaft.

  • Patent number: 5381869
Abstract: A power steering system for vehicles is disclosed using a stepping motor. The stepping motor is energized for power assist in executing turns and for reducing drag of the servomotor during the return of the dirigible wheels to the straight ahead position. A torque transducer operatively coupled with the steering wheel shaft and the steering gear generates a torque signal corresponding to the torque applied by the driver to the steering wheel. A resilient coupling also providing a range of unresisted lost motion is provided between the stepping motor and the steering gear and a transducer is operatively coupled therewith to develop a signal corresponding to lost motion. The torque signal and the lost motion signal are combined differentially and the resultant signal is used to control stepping of the stepping motor. When the driver applies torque to the steering wheel, the torque signal indicates driver input torque and the lost motion signal indicates the applied servo torque.

  • Patent number: 5333711
Abstract: A freewheeling device (11) for torque transmitting purposes at small numbers of revolutions, e.g. at low driving speeds, has two freewheeling parts (14, 17) connected via locking members (25). The locking members (25) engage apertures (24) of one of the freewheeling part (17) and recess (26) of the other freewheeling part (14). If a certain speed of the two freewheeling parts (14, 17) is exceeded, one freewheeling part (14) may overtake the other freewheeling part (17). Switching is effected via a switching cage (29) loaded by centrifugal masses (33) and which moves a switching element (30) into the released position. A spring (36) ensures the transfer into the locked position. A synchronizing device (38) is provided in order to ensure that a transfer into the locked position takes place only at small speed differentials between the two freewheeling parts (14, 17).

  • Patent number: 5308281
Abstract: A coupling having a coupling hub and a rotatably received coupling sleeve. Locking catches (19)are arranged between these two components to transmit torque. Supporting faces of the locking catches, in the torque transmitting position, are supported on corresponding supporting faces of the coupling hub and coupling sleeve. The locking catches are held in the torque transmitting position by switching rings which, via switching faces, act on corresponding switching faces at the ends of the locking catches. In the case of overloading, the switching ring is axially adjusted against the force of a spring and releases the coupling towards the disengaged position. The coupling slides inwardly as a result of the relative movement on the inclined supporting faces of the coupling sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5279402
Abstract: The invention relates to a freewheeling device 11 in the case of which the outer freewheeling component 14 and the inner freewheeling component 17 are connected in the main torque transmitting direction by locking members 25 which engage apertures 24 of the inner freewheeling component 17 and recesses 26 of the outer freewheeling component 14 and which permit one of the freewheeling components 14 to be overtaken by the other freewheeling component 17 when a certain speed is exceeded. If the speed is below the specified speed, an additional switching element is released via a speed-dependent switching device 29, so that the switching element 30, under the influence of a spring 36, is transferred into a position where it supports the locking member 25 to prevent them from escaping radially inwardly, thereby cancelling the freewheeling function.

  • Patent number: 4960010
Abstract: A drive and locking system enables a rotor (2) to be turned between two end portions which are rotationally displaced in relation to one another through a present angle, and allows the rotor to be locked in an end position. Corresponding to the end positions are end stops (1a, 1b) against which the drive urges the rotor (2). Abstract: An angular scan drive system is disclosed which permits the range of motion of a scanning mechanism to be selectively extended. The invention includes a mass (typically the scanning assembly) which is pivotally attached to a frame to scan in an oscillatory motion during a normal course of operation. A spring is included for applying a restoring force between the frame and the mass and, in accordance with the teachings of the invention, a mechanism is included for selectively coupling and decoupling the mass and the frame through the spring. In a particular embodiment, for example, the mechanism decouples the spring from the frame and attaches the free (frame) end of the spring to the mass on command during a specified portion of the scan cycle. Thus, both ends of the spring are attached to the mass thereby removing the restoring force of the spring from the assembly.

The weights (11) are mounted in a support constituted by a hub (12) defining a cavity (15) for the weights and by a cover (16) which closes said cavity (15) and is fixed to the hub (12). The cover (16) is adapted to permit the radial displacement of the weights (11) toward the member (3) under the effect of centrifugal force. This structure facilitates the placing in position of the weights and their assembly by an automatic machine.

  • Patent number: 4458795
Abstract: A mechanical coupling for a power steering system and the like having a driven shaft reversibly rotated by a servo-motor in response to either clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation of a drive shaft, with the coupling normally connecting the motor to the driven shaft. In the event of any failure of the motor to rotate the driven shaft synchronously with the drive shaft, as for example, due to an electrical power failure, rotation of the drive shaft causes the coupling to disconnect the motor from the driven shaft in the direction opposite to the torque applied by the drive shaft and simultaneously mechanically couple the drive shaft to the driven shaft for direct drive. During that time, the coupling continues to connect the motor to the driven shaft in the direction of shaft rotation. Hence, the direct drive may be assisted by any remaining motor torque, that is, any available torque which is below the level needed to achieve synchronous motion and which is applied in the direction of rotation.
