In some variations, the thickness of the base is greater than the thickness of either of the legs, which may help to maintain a separation between the tips of the legs even when the sweat-diverting device is applied to a wearer's forehead.

The band is wetted causing the pop-up sponge material to expand, such that the inner and outer surfaces are approximately ?th of an inch apart, between which is held a supply of water/liquid. The inner surface is substantially in contact with the wearer, while the outer surface is exposed to the elements. During the cooling process, the strip draws heat and/or sweat away from the user, into the cellulose material, and toward the outer surface of the strip, allowing relatively rapid evaporation of sweat and dissipation of heat from the cellulose material as it is cooled from exposure to the elements.

Laminated neoprene is a commercially available, low cost, off-the-shelf material. Laminated neoprene possesses the required capillary and hydraulic properties to absorb liquid perspiration on the forehead, and laterally divert the liquid perspiration to cylindrical outflow lengths bending downward behind the ears. The ends of the headband are folded extensions of the laminated neoprene and provide an optional means to secure the headband to the head. The top of the Sweat Diversion Band features an angular cut through the entire cross-section of laminated neoprene. Sloping toward the head, this feature facilitates absorption of the liquid into the inner wicking fabric worn against the skin. Liquid perspiration is then transported and eliminated below the ears.

    Abstract: The Modular Head Covering System includes a temperature regulation module, an insect-excluding module and a rain cover module. The headcover attaches within a pocket built into the section of the head-encircling member that crosses the forehead of the wearer. Two notches are cut into the headcover, one on each side, where the pocket ends at approximately the temples of the wearer. Notches allow the attaching edge of the headcover to be fastened within the pocket, and the rest of the headcover to be positioned either over (on the outside of) the head-encircling member or under (on the inside of) the head-encircling member. Thus, these two components function independently of one another across the back of the wearer's head.

The inside wall is covered with a porous sweat band 12 and contains apertures 7 so that air flowing through the ventilation passages 10 keeps the sweat band dry by a wick effect. The outside wall is provided with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive for attaching the device to the inside of the headgear.
