Patent number: 5200736Abstract: An assembly is disposed on a helmet for monitoring predetermined thresholds of ambient thermal condition of the helmet. Such assembly includes at least one thermistor for sensing the status of an ambient thermal condition and a signal comparator for detecting each predetermined threshold. Individual LED's visually indicate when each predetermined threshold is reached, while an audible alarm indicates when a hazardous predetermined threshold is reached. The audible alarm is further utilized to indicate if the battery voltage is under a predetermined threshold which is predicated on the breakdown voltage of a reference diode when a test switch is closed. A temperature responsive switch is also included to conserve the life of the battery by activating and deactivating the assembly about a predetermined temperature level.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1991Date of Patent: April 6, 1993Assignee: Cairns & Brother Inc.Inventors: Christopher E. Patent number: 5150479Abstract: An improved fireman's helmet is disclosed which includes an outer shell, a compressible, non-resilient foam liner, and an inner shell of hemispherical shape conforming to the foam liner. An annularly extending channel of generally U-shaped cross-section is integrally formed on and around an outer edge portion of the inner liner into which an edge portion of the foam liner is disposed. A series of flexible, stretchable, resilient crossing one another at an apex, extend radially outwardly and downwardly from the apex and extend under and across the channel, thence upwardly between the liner and the outer shell to connections on distal end portions thereof with rigid, non-resilient, incompressible anchors resting on a floor of the channel. The anchors are disposed within open slots formed in and around outer surface portions of the liner.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1991Date of Patent: September 29, 1992Assignee: E. D. Patent number: 5121508Abstract: A firefighter's helmet having a rigid shell provided with a forward portion and a rearward portion and side portions. Attached to the rigid shell and extending downwardly therefrom are support members which are positioned at the rearward portion of the shell, and at the side portions of the shell. A flexible securing member is supported by the support members. After the helmet is positioned upon the head of a firefighter the flexible securing member is drawn firmly at the back and sides of the head of the firefighter. Also, portions of the flexible securing members are positioned under the chin of the firefighter and attached together. Thus, the helmet is secured upon the head of the firefighter, and the helmet cannot move with respect to the head of the firefighter who wears the helmet.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1991Date of Patent: June 16, 1992Inventors: William L. Patent number: 5090054Abstract: A firefighter's hood which covers the upper portion of a firefighter. The hood normally has a shoulder section and a neck section and a head section, to cover those portions of the firefighter. The head section covers the head of the firefighter and has an opening to expose the face of the firefighter. The major part of the head section is made of thermal barrier material having given heat insulation qualities. However, the head section has an upper part which is adapted to be positioned at the upper portion of the head of the firefighter who wears the hood. The upper part of the head section of the hood has significantly less heat insulation qualities, so that heat can escape from the head of the firefighter and thus stress upon the firefighter which results from heat is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1990Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Inventors: William L.
