At least a portion of the gases in the effluent from the first retorting zone is contacted in the substantial absence of molecular oxygen with a portion of the hot, decarbonized solids produced in the combustion zone in the presence of added hydrocarbon-containing fines, preferably oil shale fines, in a second retorting zone such that the gases are heated and the fines are pyrolyzed to produce pyrolyzed fines and pyrolysis products containing gases and vapors.

By accommodating the agglomerating tendencies of the fresh feed material, the high energy shroud gas effectively contributes to the prevention of defluidization of the bed. The shroud gas may be inert or may comprise a gaseous reagent that reacts with the fresh carbonaceous particles in the reaction zone. The energy supplied by the shroud gas desirably is at least about 80% of said energy input to the reaction zone.

    Abstract: Coke is produced with high yield and low sulfur by heating and drying ground coking coal at 200.degree. to 300.degree. C. for 15 to 120 minutes in air, and then heating in two semicoking stages in nitrogen in fluidized bed reactors. The first semicoking stage is 400.degree. to 600.degree. C. for 10 to 60 minutes while the second is 800.degree. to 1,100.degree. C. for 10 to 60 minutes. Tar is condensed from the offgases of the first semicoking stage and the residual gas is divided and 15 to 95% recycled to the first semicoking reactor. Similarly, 15 to 95% of the offgases from the second semicoking reactor is recycled. The condensed tar is fed to the final coke-forming operation.

    Abstract: The specification discloses apparatus and methods for recovery of coal fines and for recycling thereof incidental to a self-contained system for charging preheated coal into coke ovens. The apparatus enables a system for charging preheated coal into coke ovens to meet pollution control regulations. The apparatus comprises four circulating streams of liquid for carrying coal fines in a slurry, namely, the charge main liquor circuit, the excess recycle gas scrubber circuit, the charge line condenser circuit and the charge bin vent condenser circuit. The -28 mesh coal with the liquor from the various circuits goes to a clarifier or thickener. Floating fines from top and settled fines from the bottom of the thickener are pumped via a fines tank to filters from which the solid or coagulated fines are restored to the wet coal feed to the heaters.

The cyclone reactor-separator induces separation of solids consisting of the particulate carbon containing solid residue of pyrolysis and particulate heat source from a vapor stream which includes condensible and non-condensible hydrocarbon products of pyrolysis. The particulate source of heat and solid particulate carbon containing residue of pyrolysis are transported to a cyclone burner and heated by partial combustion to a temperature suitable for feed to the cyclone reactor-separator. Rapid pyrolysis maximizes the yield of middle boiling hydrocarbons and olefins.

An installation for use in the process comprises a tar separator in the form of an open top separator vessel, a channelled structure associated with the separator vessel, means provided in the separator vessel for skimming the float tar off the bulk of the crude tar and ammonia water and passing it into the channel of said structure, and a comminuting and homogenizing device which communicates with said channel through a grade drop.

    Abstract: A process for gasification of pulverized or fine-grain coal is characterized by using a portion of the combustible gas generated at a temperature between 1500.degree. and 2200.degree. C in a slag bath generator as a gaseous agent that is mixed with the coal and then introduced under pressure into the slag bath generator. The portion of the combustible gas to be used for this purpose undergoes processing which includes extracting dust, cooling and drying before the gas is combined with the fuel. According to a different embodiment, the combustible gas produced in the generator is used in the reduction process by feeding the gas into a reduction shaft furnace. The top gas from the shaft furnace is processed by extracting dust, cooling, drying and normalizing the acidity of the top gas before the top gas is combined with fuel for introduction as a mixture into the slag bath generator.

    Abstract: A method of producing form coke that is coke having pieces of substantially identical form using a heated shaft furnace comprises mixing fine coke with a caking coal and pressing the mixture at temperatures at which the mixture is plastic in order to form briquettes. The briquettes are permitted to harden and degasify and thereafter they are exposed to a high temperature after hardening for example to a temperature of from 400.degree. to 900.degree. C from 60 to 120 minutes. Thereafter the briquettes are cooled. A first mixing substance is prepared by permitting a fine coal to fall in a non-compressed stream in the shaft furnace while heat is transferred thereto substantially by radiation.
