    Abstract: An improved water desalination system is disclosed, in which contaminated water such as seawater or brackish water is preheated and fed into a primary pressure vessel through a distribution head. The seawater is distributed from the distribution head over a non-adherent surface such as a plurality of silicone chords hanging below a distribution tank or a cone- and cylindrical-shaped surface. The water is exposed to a high temperature steam environment in the chamber to cause at least a portion of the water in the contaminated water to evaporate, while the remaining concentrated salts from the contaminated water fall to the bottom of the chamber. A portion of the steam in the primary pressure vessel is withdrawn to be condensed into fresh water. The energy withdrawn with the steam extracted from the primary pressure vessel is made up by a supplemental energy apparatus, such as a steam generator.

    Abstract: In accordance with one embodiment, a recovery unit for treating fractionated water produced by a hydraulic fracturing process is provided. The recovery unit comprises a feed strainer in fluid communication with at least one feed pump that is in fluid communication with at least one flash tank. The unit may also include at least one pre-heater in fluid communication with a condensate pot and vacuum pump, the at least one pre-heater receiving steam and the condensate pot and vacuum pump condensing the steam for transfer to at least one condensate water storage tank and removing any non-condensable gas to transfer fluid to at least one condensate storage tank. The recovery unit may include one or more flash tanks in fluid communication with separate salt settling tanks and transfer pumps for removing salt (crystals) from the brine fluid at various stages of the treatment process.

    Abstract: An integrated distillation column having a partitioned stripping or absorption section is presented. The integrated stripping/distillation column comprises a single shell housing a refluxed absorption section and a reboiled stripping section. The stripping section is partitioned by a vertical wall into first and second separate portions having upper end in fluid communication the absorption section. The stripping portions include fluid isolated lower ends having separate reboilers. In the integrated absorption/distillation column, the absorption section is partitioned and separate reflux loops are provided for each portion of the absorption section. In such a manner, a two column distillation process can be combined into one for achieving space and equipment savings.

    Abstract: The disclosed invention is an apparatus for the distillation of liquids. The apparatus has a plurality of vertically-stacked, parallel disks which are rotated. The liquid to be distilled is introduced into the center of the disk stack and migrates by centrifugal force as a thin film across side 1 of each disk. During migration, the more volatile portion evaporates from side 1 and condenses on side 2 of a neighboring disk. Energy requirements for distillation are provided by heat transfer from side 2 to side 1. The apparatus is substantially adiabatic in that vaporization and condensation occur without external supply of heating or cooling.

    Abstract: A combined water purification and power generating plant is disclosed having special features designed to maximize the cycle thermal efficiency and salt recovery, with little or no concentrated brine produced therefrom. Using the plant, a volume of salt water is delivered to a plurality of indirect and direct contact feed heaters. Within the direct contact heaters, the salt water is heated and diluted by condensation therein by super-heated steam delivered thereto. Any alkaline salts having reverse solubility characteristics particulate and are filtered therefrom. From the last direct contact feed heater, the diluted salt water is delivered to a plurality of high pressure, high temperature evaporators arranged in a series which are used to further heat, evaporate and filter the salt water in multiple stages thereby improving the plant's efficiency. A steam heater is used to super-heat a steam which delivered to various areas of the plant to heat and evaporate the salt water.

    Abstract: Apparatus is provided for converting sea or other undrinkable waters to drinkable water without the use of driven or moving parts. Reliance upon gradient effects is made to effect the vaporization of, for example, sea water, followed by the condensation of the vapor to form distilled water. Gradient effects are achieved through the provision of differentials in the thermal conductivity, capillary activity, adsorptive, absorptive and/or pressure characteristics of particulate materials, or combinations of such physicals. For example, a column is packed with material graded as to its conductivity, the least thermally conductive material being nearest the cold or ambient water that is to be purified. In packing the column each successive layer of material has a greater thermal conductivity than the layer beneath it with the most conductive being at the top near the outlet arm of the column.

    Abstract: A mixture of xylenol, water, alcohol and other substances is put into an evaporator tank which is adjusted to a pressure and temperature to evaporate the water and alcohol. The water and alcohol vapors flow through an expansion chamber into a condenser and the condensate flows back through a distributor and a control valve into a collector tank. Through a two-stage control dial a second temperature and pressure is imposed upon the evaporator tank to evaporate the xylenol which is similarly condensed and the condensate flows back through the distributor which control valve has been actuated to direct the xylenol into a second collector tank. A second evaporator is connected through a selectively operable shut-off valve to the expansion chamber. The second evaporator tank is provided with an inlet funnel which can be heated to melt solid paraffin therein. A filter is within this funnel to filter out solid foreign matter.
